My new phone (Huawei SCL-Lo2 Android 5.1.1) has a note-taking app (Notepad version 010) - so I've been entering my mileage at the start of trips: saves on logbooking manually - But ... how ever do I get the text files out of the phone? Can't find anything useful on app, and app doesn't show up in phone's installed apps list.
I moved to another country but often need to do 2-step verification with my old American website accounts. The trouble is, these systems insist on my providing some (###)###-#### number but I don't have one anymore, so I have to have a text sent to my dad in the States and call him up. Is there a service that will let me sign up to receive text messages in the US, read them online, but (key thing) also pass verification? [more inside]
Just upgraded from an earlier version, my fonts are suddenly inaccessible??? [more inside]
I like typing in landscape but browsing in portrait. Unlocking the orientation means it turns sideways whenever I lie down. I'd really like a landscape-only text editor. Plain as you like. Markdown and Dropbox support a bonus! I have a 6 Plus, iOS 9.
Hi, My daughter has an I-pod Touch and I have an I-phone 6. I understand that we cannot facetime each other, because we are on "family share" and we have the same e-mail address when we sign into our phone. She is not yet 13. [more inside]
I have seen text written for differently-abled kids with a very low level of reading ability, where each word had a symbol over it. For example, "good" might have a thumbs-up or a smiley face over it; "see" might have an eye with an arrow, or something. I've searched but google is failing me. Does anyone know of any online facility to generate text like this? [more inside]
So, I have this picture which is a page from an antique book. I'd like to use Photoshop to remove the white paper background, leaving just the text -- which I will then overlay on top of another image. Is there an easy way to do this? [more inside]
I'm looking for an easy, free way to extract text only from a very large PDF file and create a word document. [more inside]
For whatever reason, when I turned my computer on this morning Chrome is displaying fonts in a way that it just slightly different enough from the usual way to drive me insane. See here. [more inside]
Is there an iPad app that will allow me to transcribe specific people in real time? [more inside]
I sometimes send reminders and to-do items from my phone to my gmail account. To do this, I send texts from my phone's text app (currently iMessage) to my gmail address. This system has worked fine for years. But ever since I entered/updated my Apple ID in my phone's System Preferences a day ago, all my reminder emails have been converted into texts. (It happens that my gmail account is also my Apple ID.) Each email is converted to an iMessage and shows up within the iMessage app ONLY, so I have a long -running iMessage conversation consisting of nothing but texts to myself. This is useless. Help?? I write best while I'm walking, and for an upcoming project I'd like to streamline this using some sort of speech-to-text word-processing setup on my Google Nexus phone. Google's native voice recognition in Docs hates my voice and produces only large paragraphs of semipunctuated gibberish. What app(s) + accessories setup will give me accurate, extended voice-to-text transcription with minimal oversight, ideally also with good punctuation functionality? [more inside]
Sometime yesterday, something changed with my hover-over text in Chrome, where while it used to bring up the attributes wherever my curser was, now if displays them instead at the top of my screen. I don't know WHY I hate this, I just know that I want to change it back and can't discern how. Macbook Air running Yosemite. Thanks!
I recently performed some updates on my computer, and now some web pages are displayed in "text only mode", without their normal graphics. [more inside]
How literally should I be interpreting ancient and medieval stories and texts? I gather this is an open question among modern scholars, but I'm having a hard time coming up with any books that deal with it. [more inside]
We have a list of about 400 single line items in a Word Document, which are in 7 seven different sections/categories. We need to drastically rearrange that list, sometimes moving items from one section/category to other and other times just keeping them in a the same section. Then we need to be able to export the finished list back into Word (or some text app). What's the best Application for doing this on a PC? Free or cheap is preferred, but willing to kick out a little money.
I have an iPhone 6S on AT&T and am a Mac user. I'm headed to Colombia for a week, where I'll use a local SIM. I'd like to check my American phone #'s incoming text messages every few days. What are my options? My contacts are (per normal) a blend of iMessage users and SMS users. [more inside]

I'm learning Japanese with a tutor via Skype and recording my calls. At the same time, I'm taking notes on a text editor. It'd be super handy if my written notes had time codes next to them, so I could use them to figure out when in the recording my tutor said a given sentence. Does this exist?
There has to be a way that I can track my mileage in Excel. [more inside]
I have a group text with some friends from work, and we used to hang out regularly. Now, they seem to only want to be my friend over text and won't ever hang out. [more inside]

I'm trying to upload a word document with significant text formatting to a website that will only accept .doc and .docx. The problem is, I'm on a Mac and I know from experience that my formatting is likely to get horribly messed up if viewed in Windows. Is there some way to check how my document will look on a Windows machine without actually having access to Microsoft Word on a Windows machine?
Though I use it heavily, for reasons of excellent value I have a relatively austere data plan on my mobile phone. I have found the premier sites for low-investment entertainment (your Tumblrs, Cracked, et al) to be increasingly image and video-heavy, which tends to suck up data; and nearly everywhere has slick formatting and flashy ads. So what are your favourite text-heavy/low-formatting/BBS-like websites? (Aggregators like Metafilter are okay, but only if they have something going for them by themselves - they'll link to a lot of videos by their nature.) [more inside]
My brother just got a new Blackberry. (I know.) And a new phone number. He uses Verizon in New York. When he sends me a text, his messages come to my Gmail account as emails from [hisnumber]@vtext.com. Whyyyyyyyy? Please help make it stop. [more inside]
I used to be great at replying to emails and texts; now I am not. I need some ideas for methods to help me reply to people in a timely way. I could also do with some input into what is realistically considered "timely". [more inside]
I recently switched from a Samsung Galaxy 3 over to a Droid Turbo, but am having problems getting my text messages to transfer. I think the problem is that my old messages were saved on on the sim card as xml files and now the new phone saves messages as vzm files. Is there a way to convert them? Thank you in advance!
I'm a fan of the text chat. I used to be active on local dial-up systems, and later IRC. Then somewhere along the line, about two decades ago, I pretty much quit all of that and got caught up in real life. Well, I want to go back. Only it seems like all the people I'd want to talk to online are gone. [more inside]

I recently upgraded my MacBook Air to Yosemite. Everything seems to be fine, except for the fact that my iPhones text messages now happen on my computer (I think this is the continuity feature?). Anyway, I want this to stop. Of course, I Googled it before I posted, here, but the fixes that I found, don't appear to be relevant (they were from 2014 and probably from Mavericks). For example, one fix suggested opening the Messages app on your Mac (which I did) and open the Preferences menu, which I don't see. Can anyone help me stop this?? Thanks!
I feel like I've seen this kind of design and writing everywhere, and I'd like to emulate it for a personal project, but I'm not talented enough to figure it out on my own, and I don't know what to Google to find tutorials. Image link below. [more inside]
YANMTA (You Are Not My Tattoo Artist): I'm getting a tattoo. I absolutely know what I want, where I'm going (though I haven't been to the parlor yet since it's out of town) and this is definitely happening. What I want to know is how your (or your friends') fineline or scrimshaw-style and/or tattoo with lettering looks 5, 10, 20 years down the line, with regards to thinking ahead with design. I have a T-shirt with text in some kind of Arabic language, and I have no idea what it says (or even what language it says it in!) What books reuse all or part of the text of another book? I'm looking for works like Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, or A Humument, or F***ing Frankenstein, where large chunks of text are transformed but are still recognizable from the original. I am not looking for books like Wicked or The Wind Done Gone, where the story or characters are used but text is entirely original. [more inside]

Can I upload a jpeg of a piece of text to a website and have it analyse it (using character recognition) and provide me with a text file. I don't want to install CR software onto my PC (as it's an infrequent task), I want to do it via a webpage. Thanks... Mark
I want to create multi-page content consisting of text + spoken-word-audio, viewable on iPhone. Content consumption would work as follows: 1. Page displays text and plays audio (additional tap to launch audio would be okay) 2. User taps something to call up next page. My first thought was Powerpoint, but I haven't found an iPhone app that handles audio embedded in PPT. I'm limited to working on my Windows PC, so I think Keynote is out. Any thoughts on a format to use for the content, and app to use to consume it? [more inside]
