My friend and I are trying to find a photo he saw on one of the many live blogs on Election Day. Despite our successful Google-fu track records, we're unable to find it. Can you help us? [more inside]
Can you recommend a San Antonio hotel that has rooms whose windows can be opened? Or is there a historic hotel that you like a lot in spite of its lacking this feature? [more inside]
I'll be traveling to Austin for work in a month or so and would love to change my mind about bbq brisket. Help me on my quest for the best barbecue I can find! [more inside]
According to some, Texans who vote for a 3rd-party (aka "not Hillary") candidate are throwing away their vote, their one chance to move Texas toward purple in a presidential election. However... [more inside]
Posting for a friend: Someone I'm very close to is in a criminal legal situation and while I totally understand that Metafilter is not a substitute for actual legal advice, I'm writing this in hopes of getting educated opinions or shared experiences (and won't say no to legal advice in the process). Landlord in Texas here. I can't get my tenant to stop giving me extra rent in two different ways. What, if anything, should I do? [more inside]
One of our rotten dogs (pictured here) escaped our backyard last night, almost certainly by jumping the back fence. Luckily, we were able to find him, but once he finds an escape route, he will try it again & again. To rule out this specific exit, I'm considering the idea of planting bushy shrubs along the fence to break up his running start and act as an extra buffer. I have a bit of a black thumb and need help deciding what to plant! [more inside]
My grandparents back in the old country had a strip of land on the outskirts of Dallas that no one in the family knew about. It's been accumulating taxes for 40 years. My grandmother and her descendants have been sued and lost. What now? [more inside]
I am working on a project where I am comparing NPR member stations to the list of stations at each state broadcasting association's website. I have found several cases where the same station call sign on the same band and at the same frequency is listed in two different communities. For example, Texas station KTTZ-FM 89.1 is shown by the NPR 2013 station list to be in Leander and Lubbock. Is this a mistake?
Going to meet up with my mom in Austin for Thanksgiving weekend. Neither one of us has ever been before. Where should we eat, drink, and hear great live music over Thanksgiving weekend? [more inside]
Why is the road grid in a vast swath of west Texas rotated about 12 or 15 degrees counterclockwise from true north? Roughly between Pecos, Lamesa, Abilene, and Stiles. The county lines are mostly on the NSEW grid, or on natural features like rivers.
My mother is looking for a new dentist. She's in an assisted living community in Round Rock (on Sunrise Road, near Old Settlers) and I'll be driving her to appointments. Her teeth are in good shape (no dentures, few cavities); she has no dental insurance beyond Medicare and will be paying directly.
Can anyone help me identify a white chested bird that may be an eagle with brownish wings? [more inside]
So, my best friend divorced her husband when she discovered that he was a child molester. Subsequent to the divorce, he has been convicted, added to the sex offender database and is forbidden from unsupervised contact with kids. She and he have a young child. Visitation has been at a court mandated facility, for which he bears the cost. Today she called and said her attorney told her to pull together a list of friends who would be willing to supervise the visitation. Wtf? [more inside]
Objective: Career change to technical writing. Obstacles: My current demanding job. Needing to relocate to place that actually has technical writing jobs. **Please help me determine the feasibility of my plan to relocate and change my career. Details inside.** [more inside]
I had this album in the early 90s that featured a woman singing songs about committing recreational suicide, being abducted by UFOs, and Elvis, and I remember really adoring it. But now age and senility have caught up with me, and I have no idea who this woman was. Help? [more inside]
A series of events that I don't want to get into in detail has my sister living in Waco, TX without a job and without much social support and in need of mental health care. Does anyone know of any specific resources there that she can use? [more inside]
When I look at the main Republican presidential candidates (or assumed candidates at this point), I can understand what each one gains from running, even knowing (for most of them anyway) that their chance of winning is very slim. But Rick Perry puzzles me... [more inside]
While DC has been a lovely place to live, we're interested in something quieter and closer to the family and friends back in TX. [more inside]
My parents are embracing retirement and planning to escape Minnesota for January and February. They're not too picky about where they stay, as long as it's on the beach and the weather is warm. Complication: they're bringing the cat. [more inside]
I am traveling to Houston for work soon and would like some help finding awesome things! I will have a car but not a lot of time as this is a work trip. [more inside]
I need help identifying this bird. A fried took the photo while traveling in Texas a few days ago. The bird was seen in the urban area of Dallas, TX. Thanks!
My (US Citizen) husband recently indicated that he’d like me (a UK Citizen) to leave. Where do I start? [more inside]
It's possible that, sometime in the next five years, we may have to leave Jacksonville, FL for Mrs. Mosley's career. I had always thought that if I did move out of my hometown of 41 years, it would be (a) somewhere somewhat cooler and (b) somewhere somewhat more liberal. Dallas doesn't strike me as either of those. Can someone who lives there give me their impression of the city?
Dearest Mefites of the USA, my 21 yo daughter is planning to galavant around your country this Northern Hemisphere summer, and we'd like your input! Any advice/recommendations for things to see, places to go, how to get there, accommodation, etc appreciated. We're yet to book flights, leaving everything pretty much to the last minute. We have friends in San Fran who will likely be her first stop, then after that, all is variable. [more inside]
Do you think I can build a network and find a job in technical communication despite living in the country with no STC chapter? My foundation is decent: an English degree and current technical job. Said job has few technical writing roles, and none available for the foreseeable future. More inside. [more inside]
Hi, I'm looking for location ideas to get a few nice shots around Midland. Is there anywhere you could suggest for pretty pictures? I'd love to see rigs, etc and cattle? Thanks!

Where are the best trivia nights in Austin, Texas? I am looking for something that is fun, but treated seriously and with thoughtful, wide-ranging, difficult questions. [more inside]
My ex has suddenly decided he wants to parent again. He got a bit screwed when it came to holidays and summer because based on his behavior during our marriage and the divorce he wouldn't be bothered. Anyways he says he has a lawyer and is going to send me papers to sign to lower his monthly child support payment and adjust holiday visits because he is making less money than when we got divorced. This is likely true he had the best job he has ever had aside from the military when we were getting divorced. [more inside]
I am surprising my spouse with a trip to the Hill Country. Difficulty: I know nothing about the Hill Country. And the Hill Country is, like, bigger than my home state. Texans of MeFi, can you help me out? [more inside]
I bought a car (from a dealer) in Texas in August. The buyer's tag (which is what the temporary plate is called, I think) expires on Wednesday. I still don't have the license plates. What do I do? [more inside]
The developer of my neighborhood (a single individual) built a personal home in the neighborhood and still lives here. He was the HOA's acting president (as the developer) until the development reached 75% capacity and then had 120 days to hold a vote to transition to an Owner based HOA. The new board has parsed the numbers and I am most concerned with insane "investment" he made to himself with the HOA's money -- resulting in a $15k loss. Can this be legal? [more inside]
I was diagnosed with bulging L4/L5 discs with spondylolysis and stenosis. Doctor convinced me to get epidural / facet injections. After the shots, I started getting very bad sciatica ( I think its sciatica ). I could hardly stand in the shower. Before the shots I was running half marathons. Now I can't run at all. I can't lift heavy things. Only walking makes it feel better. Its been six months with no improvement. The quality of my life is way worse than it was before. What happened post injection? Can anyone recommend a good back doctor / orthopedist in Austin?
Hi, I'm planning on starting graduate school in Texas in fall, 2015. Right now we (my husband and I) are living in another state. Then plan is to move to Texas in Augest, 2015. Husband would physically be in Texas but working remotely for an employer outside of Texas. Is it possible for me to qualify for in-state tuition rate? What needs to be done in order to gain residency in Texas? Thanks.

I will be arriving around 5 PM, might take me until 6 PM to get to the hotel on Sunday. What can you suggest to me that might be fun? [more inside]
Looking for advice on finding a suitable therapist for some issues I'm having and just for a long term self improvement. I have been putting it off, but finally am at a space where I'm ready to find a good long term therapist. About a year ago I met with a therapist a few times but we didn't "click" plus I couldn't afford it at the time. Things I want to work on: [more inside]
My company has offered me a weekend at a B&B in the Texas Hill Country in thanks for 10 years of service. Looking on the web there appear to be thousands of them, with wildly scattered reviews depending on which review site one chooses. Having had mixed experiences with B&B's, I thought I'd turn to the green for suggestions. If you've been to one in that area that you would recommend (or steer us away from), please write below.
I will be in Hammond, Louisiana this October and wanted to make a road trip back to my home in Vancouver Canada. The current plan is to buy a vehicle in Hammond or New Orleans, then drive through Texas and up the coast. I am an artist, so visiting sites like Marfa to see the Chianti Foundation and visiting LA to see the MOCA and the Hammer are priorities. I am asking for advice on art sites and routes with the most interesting or essential things to see. I've visited a few places in the US but this is a big trip for me I may not be able to make again so I'd like to make the most of it. If you are American, assume I know nothing. The obvious for you may not be that obvious to a Canadian. Thanks!
My camping experience jumps directly from "getting drunk overnight at a campsite with bathroom facilities nearby" to "totally cut off from all society and pooping in a hole." What is the fecal protocol at a primitive (designated but usually more remote and no facilities) campsite in a Texas state park?
How likely is it that responding to a request for public records with data that has been encoded and explicitly refusing to share or even discuss the key and/or algorithm required to decode it satisfies Texas Freedom of Information Act regulations? [more inside]
I have, on the second floor of my home in Texas, a screened-in porch with chairs, a massage table, and a sauna. Every few months, everything is coated in a fine yellow mist, and (ignoring what havoc it wrecks with my sinuses) the whole place is a two-hour pain to clean. Hive Mind: Suggestions for keeping the pollen out? Alternatively, suggestions for cleaning that are more effective (I always end up with some on the roof of the sauna, some in the structural whatsits in the roof, all over the floor, chairs, table, etc) than going through with a 36 pack of bar rags and crazily-diluted bleach?
I'm flying into El Paso to visit a friend who just moved there. We're going to drive to Marfa, TX for a few days! What should we do there? [more inside]

My home's Smart Meter is located directly across from my kitchen sink, on the exterior side of the wall they share. I probably spend about 40 minutes each day standing within 2 feet of the meter, doing dishes and washing produce, etc. My stove is only about 4 feet from the meter, and I love to cook so I spend a considerable amount of time there as well. I am hoping to become pregnant soon. Is this exposure to radiation something I should be at all concerned about? [more inside]
