I started a voip company in California, with a friend which we will give up soon. Costs were: dedicated hosting, buying servers, telephony hardware, web hosting, headsets, and our own Internet / cell phone services. My question is, what can we deduct on our taxes, if anything? This seems like it should be a common situation. Oh, and we never registered as a corp or partnership.

My friend and I were having a discussion over acceptable marginal tax rates. I'm wondering where I would look to quickly find out how much of my income I would have to pay in state and federal taxes at different income levels. Is there a quick (online) way to figure this out? Exclude complications like stocks, marriage, other tax breaks, etc. If you want a specific salary, how much would I have to pay in taxes on a $100,000 salary? Thanks!

Last year, I used H&R Block's web site to file my taxes. At the time, I was working on a PC laptop. Now, I'm using Mac, and none of the h&r tax filing apps are rendering properly. I tried using Firefox, Safari, Explorer, and Opera to no avail. Are there any 'free file Companies' on the web for Mac-Users?

I am a sole proprieter in CA and hiring my wife as an employee. I am having a lot of trouble figuring out the process. I know that the CA EDD is the state agency, and the IRS is the federal agency that we use to make this happen- but neither place states very clearly what to do to tell them that I am hiring her. My employer has not given me my W-2. I've contacted the IRS, and gotten a substitute form that I have to fill out myself, but since I was never given paystubs, (tax information was usually written on the paycheck itself, and, being silly.lazy, I didn't photocopy my checks,) I have to guess at the amount I owe. I'm also concerned about filing for Arizona income tax, but when I called them they said I don't need a W-2, which dosen't make much sense. I've gotten the run-around from my employer (the company owner,) with her blaming the accountant. I want my W-2, but I also think they deserve some sort of punishment/sanction for this. What can I do?

I have been freelancing as TV producer for one company for over 6 months now working on various projects. The boss thinks he needs me to stand down for a few weeks to keep my independent contractor status. All of the IRS info I have found is vague on the point of continuous employment. How long will I have to stand down (aka take the vacation I want to take) before I can return to this company? And legally how long is too long to be a contactor for one company (when does the IRS question contractor vs. employee)?

Yet another tax question, sorry. We're confused about our tax situation this year. Details: we were married last June, so this is our first time filing together. We make almost equivalant salaries (48,000 and 54,000), sold ~14,000 in mutual funds this year, invested ~900 in one 401k, and paid about 2400 in student loan interest. We don't own a home. One of us claimed 1 exemption, the other claimed 2. (more inside) [more inside]

H&R Block sells kinda pricey tax preparation software and for an extra $15 bucks, or so, you can file online using that software. Or, you can go to the IRS website and grab a link that allows you to prepare AND FILE your taxes for FREE -- using H&R Block's website. This makes no sense to me. Why on earth would they do that???
