Tax strategies for a travel year of no income

My spouse and I are going to leave our jobs at the end of the year and travel internationally throughout 2015, with no income. Are there any strategies we should be following to make the most, tax-wise, of this change? [more inside]

Employer reveals they've been inadvertently underpaying me for years

Due to an accounting error, my employer has not been paying me my full salary for the last several years. I'm in sales, and I get paid on commission, so my paycheck fluctuates month to month - I never even noticed my paycheck was always secretly slightly less than what it should have been. My employer just discovered their error and told me immediately. Which I hugely respect. We have a good employment relationship and we'd all like it to continue. They're saying they now owe me about $145k plus interest, and are prepared to write me a check, but they know this raises some tax issues for me. [more inside]

Canadian GST/HST error

From about 2008 to 2012, I was self employed as a private tutor in Canada. My income ranged from about 25k - 40k. During that time, I didn't collect GST/HST from my students because I didn't realize I was required to. I received a letter on Friday from Canada Revenue saying that I've been registered for an HST number and asking to submit GST/HST for 2010-2011. I'm a bit scared now, and wondering if anyone can give me an idea of what the penalties might be? I plan to talk to an accountant in the next week, but I'm just hoping to get an idea of what I might be in for.

Calculating California state income tax withholding

I feel like this should be really easy, but I'm coming up with a non-sensical result. I am considering taking a job that would involve a pay cut (long story, I promise it's worth it). I am trying to calculate what my actual paycheck would be. I'm using the paycheck calculator at Paycheckcity.com to figure this out. But the number it's giving me for California state income tax doesn't seem right. [more inside]

Tax Q: Gettin' divorced, can't claim deductions.

Here's the rub: In February on 2012, I decided to end my marriage. Because I was dead broke, we simply moved apart, split the bank account in two and went our separate ways with the understanding that we'd make a move to formally divorce in the next year. We did not get a legal separation. That divorce is now pending. My soon-to-be-ex-wife filed her taxes 'Married, Filing Separately'. This causing me all kind of tax havoc, including a bill I have no way of paying. More inside... [more inside]

Common Law, Taxes and Immigration in Canada without SIN

tax consulting services

I'm in a situation with some unfilled taxes and potentially more back taxes then I can pay at the moment. I've seen ads for tax consulting services that help you talk to the IRS. I've also seen some negative reviews for some of them, but was wondering if someone has some positive experience with any of these and can make a recommendation? SWF ISO DC CPA

Looking for a recommendation for a good CPA or accountant in the DC, NoVA, or Southern Maryland area to field a set of somewhat-complicated questions about taxes. (Read: H&R Block is not going to cut it here.) The problem? All my close friends use TurboTax, and I'm reluctant to mass e-mail my entire contact list for recommendations, since I think the type of CPA (or accountant--is there a difference?) might matter in this situation and figuring out what flavor I need means disclosing more personal financial details than I'm comfortable with. Does the US tax non-US citizens working outside the US for US companies?

I am not a citizen or resident of the US, but I've been offered the opportunity to do some freelance work for a US-based company. The work will be done entirely in my country, without ever visiting the US, but as far as I can tell they will be paying me directly from their home office in the US (not via a subsidiary in my country). Under these circumstances, would the IRS be expecting some sort of filing from me relating to this when the next US tax deadline comes around?

Messed up my tax return - what now?

I filed my taxes online about two or three weeks ago, and completely forgot about a mutual fund I own. Or rather, I remembered it, but because I didn't take anything out of it or put anything into it, I didn't think anything of it. Of course, I forgot about the dividends. So, today I get my Form 1099-DIV from Goldman Sachs, and find that I received $71.04 in total ordinary dividends. What should I do? My taxes were filed electronically and I've already received my state refund. Should I just sit on it and if I'm questioned by the IRS, pay the $10 or whatever in extra taxes? Will I get fined a huge amount if I don't alert them now? If I do alert them, how would I go about doing that? Asking anonymously because I feel like an idiot.
