Australian with US investments

What sort of things should an Australian living in Australia know about owning an investment (e.g., an index fund) in the USA? The investment would be part of a retirement fund that has a low (15%) tax rate in Australia.

Estimated Self-Employment Tax

I am trying to learn more/understand better my new tax situation as an independent consultant, and was hoping someone could help me with the following questions: 1. How do I compute my Net Earnings From Self-Employment (NESE)? What calculation is used? 2. Since I am excluded from Federal and State tax (my tax domicile is TX) for my foreign-earned income amount (I estimate it would be $87,500 for 2011) - can you break down how I can get the estimated tax payment amount for 2011? Avoiding tax on savings

[UK-tax-filter]. I'm a resident of UK, though not a national of UK, EU or US. I work and pay taxes in the UK. Is it legal for me to transfer my money to a savings account in another country and hence avoiding the tax on the income from saving accounts? If it is not legal, how would the HMRC ever find out anyway? [more inside]

Taking a Loan in a Foreign Country

I would like to know if I took a bank loan in another country and had the money wired to me here in the US, around 160K, if the IRS would tax that amount. I called them and apparently they didn't know because they could not answer the question. I will have to pay back that loan so i would imagine that the amount wouldn't be taxed here (as long as i prove to the IRS that i got the loan).
