My partner has not worked at all in 2012. He did not work much in 2011. (He had some income in January.) We are not married or civilly unioned or anything “official.” However, for the last two years, he has qualified as my dependent and I have filed accordingly. Last year, this felt tricky because we were concerned about where the income cut-off was, and he filed as usual, but reporting himself as my dependent. This year did not feel tricky at all because he had no income at all (no employment, unemployment, no disability, nothing), so as soon as I got my W-2, I filed and got my refund and put it out of my mind.
Until this morning as we headed out the door to work/doctor's appointment, when he asked “wait, when you did your taxes while I was in the hospital, did you file mine?” Oops.

I'm currently a contractor for a U.S. based website which has just changed owners. The new owners now require all contractors to send updated IRS forms 8233 and W-8BEN. I'm a Filipino citizen residing in Manila. I do not have an ITIN - this was never required of us before. The new requirements presuppose that I have an existing ITIN.

I'm trying to find information about taxes and volunteer paid experimental (non-clinical) studies. I work in a lab, and one of our participants told us a week ago that if a study pays (the volunteer) over a certain amount, it gets taxed. Can anyone tell me if this is true and give me an official link? We're in Philadelphia, PA, USA. I can provide any other relevant information you need. Thanks!

I'm in a situation with some unfilled taxes and potentially more back taxes then I can pay at the moment. I've seen ads for tax consulting services that help you talk to the IRS. I've also seen some negative reviews for some of them, but was wondering if someone has some positive experience with any of these and can make a recommendation? I can't pay my taxes right now, but according to the IRS's information form on payment plans, if I can pay within 120 days I don't need a installment plan -- which would charge interest. The form requests that I call the IRS to notify them and get more information. However, I haven't been able to get through on their phone line for the last week, and now it's the 15th. What should I do?

I filed my taxes online about two or three weeks ago, and completely forgot about a mutual fund I own. Or rather, I remembered it, but because I didn't take anything out of it or put anything into it, I didn't think anything of it. Of course, I forgot about the dividends. So, today I get my Form 1099-DIV from Goldman Sachs, and find that I received $71.04 in total ordinary dividends. What should I do? My taxes were filed electronically and I've already received my state refund. Should I just sit on it and if I'm questioned by the IRS, pay the $10 or whatever in extra taxes? Will I get fined a huge amount if I don't alert them now? If I do alert them, how would I go about doing that? Asking anonymously because I feel like an idiot.

Should I be paying US taxes? I moved to the UK when I was 14 (1991), and have never drawn an income in the United States, don't maintain a credit card, bank account, address, etc. However, I am still a US citizen, as well as a UK resident (soon to become citizen).
A (paranoid and not informed) parent is worried that I'm going to end up in prison for tax evasion. I certainly don't earn enough money that I can afford to be taxed in two countries.
Any information is greatly appreciated.
