Apple tech geek needs to expand Android horizons

My loyalties are firmly in the Apple camp. I've owned many iPhones, iPads and various Macs. However, I know nothing about Android devices... and it's about time I learn. I'm a self proclaimed tech geek for pity's sake, but yet I am woefully ignorant about all things Android. I want to change this! [more inside]

Tablet for hearthstone

I'm looking to buy a sub-$200 tablet primarily to play Hearthstone and watch Netflix. I'm finding it confusing to to pick out the best quality tablet in this price range that will run Hearthstone well, do you have a suggestion? I am open to Windows, Android, or Apple. If I understand correctly, the Hearthstone app is not out for Android yet but it should be available soon.

Optimistically, a mobile device fresh start.

My iPad 2 recently bit the dust. Before then, I had been using the iPad for entertainment + school, as well as a droid smartphone for typical smartphone things. My droid is also on its last legs, and I'm considering changing my technology situation to an iPad Mini with mobile data + a dumb phone (just talk and text). Questions ensue. [more inside]

Make an Android tablet elder-friendly for my grandma

Family members have gotten an Android tablet for my 97-year-old grandmother. Please suggest some ways to make the tablet as friendly and easy to use as possible for someone who has computer experience, but who can be pessimistic about learning new things and can get frustrated with people trying to teach her. We're particularly interested in tablet settings and also methods for instructing her in its use, but also open to hearing about tutorials or apps that might make her experience smoother. I'm overseas, so I'll be passing along ideas to my dad. [more inside]

Teaching on the sly

Music teaching n00b filter. I now have a tablet with ear training software I use in lessons and discovered the kids quite automatically pick up terms like "minor second" which I hadn't dreamt about teaching them yet. Just as they're in the app. Then when they're stuck on a melody on their instrument I say "go up a minor second here" and it works. Holy interval, batman! What are similar ways you use to teach musical concepts without being all obvious about it? Would it be correct to classify this as active/experiental learning and what are your favourite resources? How to remove a superglued security base from my tablet?

I was given a tablet demo unit from my workplace because we no longer sell this model. It's functional and great, but still has the old security base attached. It's a circular nub about 1" thick that fits into the cradle of the demo pedestal, and has wires coming off both ends of the nub. I can cut off the wires, but the nub is superglued onto the back of the device. What's the best way to remove it? Photos within. [more inside]

Device of all trades, master of none?

In the next month or so, I'm going to need a new laptop. Windows 8 scares me, but I'm willing to try. In the spirit of being game, and because I like the idea of tablets but can't currently live with a tablet as my primary device, I'm considering a 2-in-1 device. Reviews are mixed. I can't tell if I should just get a normal laptop and wait a couple of generations for 2-in-1s to work some bugs out. Does anyone have experience/recommendations? [more inside]

Cintiq through airport screening?

Can I take a Cintiq digitiser tablet through airport screening without getting it confiscated? The Cintiq requires mains power to work. (It doesn't have a battery, & was never designed to work with one). I think it's understandable that I wouldn't want to check this in as hold baggage. It's easy to mistake the thing for a tablet that "suspiciously does nothing" when not plugged in to the wall. UK-US trip. [more inside]

Making a stylus from the bamboo in my yard is probably not going to work

I have a Bamboo tablet from a few years ago that Wacom no longer makes. I lost the stylus. Perhaps my google-fu is failing me, but it seems that a stylus that will work this is very hard to find. And when I can find it, it's $30 - and for not much more I can just get a used version of a newer pen/tablet but I don't want to buy a new one yet. [more inside]

Android tablet with best battery life?

My cheapo Android tablet finally gave up the ghost. I'm in the market for a new, nicer one and thought about getting the Nexus 7*. But searching around, it seems to have a lot of problems with battery life, even when on stand-by. I don't play games or watch videos or even listen to music much on a tablet. My main use case is reading and annotating pdf articles and books, especially when traveling (long flights) when battery life is kinda important. I'd like a thin and light 1080p laptop. It does not need to be powerful, but it does need to be cheap. I'd like to spend about $300, but it must be under $500. The perfect machine would be something like a chromebook, but with a higher res screen than the ones I'm aware of. The resolution requirement trumps the thin and light requirements. [more inside]

Low-cost tablets for academics

I would like a low-cost tablet for academic work. Mainly reading and annotating PDFs and scientific papers, note-taking, and brainstorming/checklist-type activities. I have a Nook and barely use it because it's terrible with PDFs and can't do graphics and figures at all, even in the ePub format.
