After resisting the call of the flatscreen tv for an embarrassingly long time, my boyfriend and I are finally saying farewell to our twelve-square-foot CRT and taking the LCD plunge. After much research we've settled on the
Samsung UN46D8000, but I have two special-snowflake hardware concerns.

I'm looking to buy my first HDTV. I know little to nothing about technology, and it seems that all of the discussions and guides online are geared towards very savvy technophiles looking to spend big bucks on a very precise level of viewing and audio perfection that I neither need nor want. Please help me understand what all of these weird terms mean and what I actually need in order to watch tv and vhs/dvd videos.

I've got to make a quick decision on whether to buy a used Sony KP 61HS10 61" rear projection TV. I know nothing about large screen TVs and would appreciate any general pointers on purchasing.

My TV is broken. Within the last few days, it has gone from color to black and white. You can wiggle the s-video plug in the back to see color in spurts, and sometimes hitting it brings back color for a few minutes. Its not an old TV, maybe 5 years old, but it is a tube type. Is this even worth fixing? It's a big tv, so replacing it with one an equal size would be expensive. Is it something your average joe could open up and fix?

OlyFilter - Is is just me or is it downright impossible to find out when (and on what channel) a particular Olympic event is going to be on television without finding out the results? In this age of tape-delayed television, but with non-tape-delayed internet results, what is a man to do? Specifically, I want to watch all the Mens Basketball games that are on TV. Anyone have a list? I know there is a game on today (I think at three...) but I'm afraid to look for it online fearing spoiling the results.

My wife and I are considering a new television, our first in more than a decade. I'm lost. There are so many acronyms that I'm beginning to drown in alphabet soup.
What's the difference between HDTV and HDTV-ready? Are they the same?
Will DVDs look noticeably better on an HDTV set (or HDTV-ready set)? All I really want is a smallish widescreen high-definition television under $600. Is this even possible?
Can you recommend some good web sites to help my research and decision?
