Why are new TV shows, such as USA's Mr. Robot and AMC's Fear The Walking Dead, running 65 or 66 minutes? Are we getting more show, more ads, or a little of both? How widespread is this practice and can we expect it to continue? In future syndication, will episodes be cut to fit in one-hour time slots?
I need TV antenna advice tailored to my specific circumstances, and no amount of googling has helped beyond generalities. Yes, this is another cable cutting question. [more inside]
This is a cranky old lady question from a cranky old lady; whenever PBS has a fund drive, they take off the regular shows that I like and instead show old music specials or documentaries by Ken Burns they have already shown hundreds of times. I really do not want to see great hits of the 50s, Andrea Boccelli, or Simon and Garfunkle , and these substitutions make me less likely to contribute to the station, not more. Does showing these things again and again really get people to give money?
My friend lost a bet and I get to talk to her for an entire morning sounding like Linda Belcher from Bob's Burgers. How can I best sound like Linda? [more inside]

Hey Brilliant People, happy Monday! I'm looking for film, tv, novel, play, etc. examples of women heros who are fighting against sexual predators especially ones who are doing it in secret? Like super heros! Can anyone think of a character like that? Thanks so much!
What movie/TV show am I thinking of? We find out grumpy conservative guy went to Woodstock and hated it. [more inside]
I was interviewed by two television stations who later broadcast part of the interview. Both sent me a link to the story. The (formally) easy problem I have is to download the linked broadcast to my computer and eventually to a DVD archive. [more inside]
In the late 1980s, I remember seeing something on television that featured some kids picking up a signal/broadcast from outer space. The broadcast contained an alien news show. It was a standard type of news show with male and female aliens at a news desk with an inset in the top corner. The aliens were sort of heavy-set, not your generic, skinny bug-eyed aliens. I don't think it was intended to be scary but it kind of freaked me out as a 7-year old and it has stuck with me to this day. [more inside]
Help me chose a TV (like a Roku) or similar, that can play netflix, youtube, any webpage, and preferably my girlfriend's ATT U-verse live account (it has a website login). If it matters I'll be buying it used on craigslist or refurbished. [more inside]
Where, in Ventura County, is a good place to watch (and hear; keyword there) the NFL pre-season games live on TV and still manage to eat a reasonably priced meal? [more inside]
Hey Brilliants! Can you think of any characters who are deaf and are also rebellious or unconventional / daring? Thanks so much!
Asking for a friend. Is there a recommendation engine for television shows that you use and get good results from? I suggested that my friend ask Metafilter for recommendations, but he said that wouldn't work for him. He just wants recommendations powered by algorithms, he doesn't want to try asking people online. Also he is not a Netflix member and doesn't want to sign up.
When watching films or TV shows, on what basis do you deduce that screenwriting, directing, acting, casting etc. are good/bad? [more inside]
I have this monitor. I use it with my 2012 15" Macbook Pro. I am curious about using it as a TV. I have questions about some of my older components and an adapter I saw on Amazon. [more inside]

Our daughter just finished her first year of Spanish in a full-immersion kindergarten. We're looking for good all-Spanish TV shows we can show her (and my wife, who wants to learn) over the summer so she doesn't forget it all. [more inside]
The Dish Network package he has doesn't carry the station this year that it is on. He does have internet so how can he watch it for free online? There are different things that come up when I search for it but I want one that is safe to use and has no malware or viruses.
Which episode of House of Cards featured the democrats hiding in their offices so Republicans would leave and they could quickly appear and win a vote? [more inside]
We have watched (it was a long winter) the entirety of Anne of Green Gables, Road to Avonlea, Wind at My Back, and Emily of New Moon. We (two adults, one almost 8 yr old) need a new, mildly addictive, not scary series, hopefully with a similar sort of flavour? [more inside]
I recall having seen something on TV maybe a decade or two ago in which a female character (or a male with a very high-pitched voice) was reciting the line, "O to be in England now that April's there[...]" several times with a very exaggerated/attempted British accent ("Eauuuugh to be in EEEEEEEEEEngland..."). I don't remember much more, and all my Google searches turn up is the actual poem that the line is from. I'd like to find this again; does it ring a bell to anyone? [more inside]
Help me identify a TV comedy about a regular dude who's dating a famous woman. [more inside]
My fiancé and I like to watch television together, but our schedules are unusually busy this summer, so our usual 45 minutes shows aren't cutting it. Any recommendations for excellent 21-30 minute programs? [more inside]
Hi there! I am trying to find three new shows to get into. My favorite shows was Grey's Anatomy- although the writing is not so great anymore. I really like Nasheville, Big Bang, Downton Abbey and Modern Family. I just got into Proof and The Good Wife. I have tried Scandal but just can't get into it. OITNB is too depressing for me. Any ideas? Any new shows I should try. thanks!!
I met a guy who is producing a tv show - he has raised half the money to shoot the pilot and seems to be legitimate. I told him I was a writer and he expressed interest in having me on board as one of the writers for the show. He then asked me if I could turn his treatment (the overall idea of the first episode) into a proper script format. He did not offer to pay for this and it seemed like it was a way of auditioning / interviewing me. More details and my question inside.. [more inside]
One of my current brain-off binge-watch-while-tinkering/sewing shows is "Supernatural." I'm partway through Season 1. I've heard that, like many long-running shows (don't even look at me, X-Files), it eventually goes pear-shaped. As spoiler-free as possible: when should I quit? Alternatively, at what point should I quit, but feel free to point out any later episodes that are worth the watch.
Right now everyone in our family, but especially my young son, watches too much TV (or shows on iPad). I'd like to cut it down a lot ideally, but realistically to under what is generally recommended the "safe maximum" for young children. [more inside]
I recently saw the first episode, "Hammer of God," of the 2013 BBC adaptation of Father Brown, with Mark Williams as the priest. Although I would swear that I had not watched the series before, I seemed to have seen this episode. I remembered it in great detail, except for two: I had not a single memory of Father Brown in the story, and in my memory the villain killed himself instead of turning himself in. Is it possible that the adaptation could have been used in another series? [more inside]
Looking for TV Show recommendations (sci-fi, adventure, mystery) to watch with my 9 year old daughter who is currently a big Dr. Who fan. [more inside]
A friend and I have a tradition of watching RuPaul's Drag Race (and its companion show Untucked) "together" while Skype-chatting. Now that season 7 is over, what other shows would lend themselves to watching this way? [more inside]
We just bought a Vizio E550VL LCD TV on Craigslist. We tested it before buying it, of course, and it worked fine; we brought it home and watched an episode of Game of Thrones on it, and it continued to work fine. The next morning when we turned it on, the screen brightness starting flickering badly, and a little while later the screen stopped turning on at all. When we opened it up we found this charred wiring (note blackened housing and brown spots on circuit board.) What should we do? [more inside]

I'm interested in good science fiction in any format (book, film, comics, etc.) that explores that idea that we are not alone in the universe, but wildly mismatched with everybody or nearly every else in terms of civilization stages, kinds of technology, perception, etc. [more inside]
So I was just looking at some production art work for Adventure Time, and it seemed weird, in this day and age, that they're still producing the show to be watched on a standard-definition, 4:3 TV set. [more inside]
Hey Brilliant Minds! Happy Monday :) I'm wondering if you might point me in the direction of any films, books, tv, plays, etc. that utilize a classic hero's journey structure (Joseph Campbell) from a feminist perspective and/or have a female protagonist. Thanks so much!
I often have to give presentations at offices I don't work at. There is usually some form of AV equipment available, however, the local staff often don't know how this equipment works. Cables are not necessarily plugged in where they should be (or even there at all) and there are no on-site IT staff to help out if there's a problem. What do I need to a) know and b) buy to be able to waltz into a new office, hook up the doohickeys to the whoozawhatzits and deliver a PowerPoint presentation (or show a video) with a minimum of fuss? I'm in pre-production revolving around the idea of an operator - the one you see in movies and TV who relays information back to the units on the ground or hacks into systems and opens/unlocks doors, codes etc (examples such as The Matrix and Ocean's 11). I know there are hundreds of shows/movies that features them but can you give suggest specific movies and if a series, the specific episode? I'm trying to find and analyse a collection of cool sequences or representations. Bonus points for linking the specific scenes in Youtube! Many thanks!
I'd like to stop torrenting the TV shows I follow and be able to pay for them on the up and up. I don't want to stream shows, for a variety of reasons. The shows I watch are for the most part available as season subscriptions on Itunes. Has anyone used itunes to subscribe to shows? Is there a better option? [more inside]
Those of you with a Roku / Chromecast / Apple TV / etc. probably know the drill – you spend more time browsing listings trying to find something you want to watch, than actually watching something. (And browsing with a TV remote is a tedious, ineffective chore.) Does an independent, comprehensive TV guide exist? [more inside]
I watched Unplanned America on Netflix, an Australian travel show in which these guys travel around America, and it made me realize this is a category that I enjoy. What are some other non-American travel shows about America? [more inside]
I'm about to get on a long international flight. I'd like to download some TV shows and movies to my Mac laptop before I go, so that I can watch them offline while in the air. Most sites seem to be focused on streaming these days, so what are my best options for obtaining offline content? I'm in the U.S. Thanks!
I'm a US person currently living in the UK, specifically Cambridge, and this is the first election I've been present for. I like to watch election coverage on TV in a pub with a bunch of left-leaning politically-clued-in people. I've sampled a lot of Cambridge pubs and I've noticed that among their many charms is an absence of televisions. Is there a place where I can watch election coverage over a pint (or several)? The closer to the city centre the better, but I'm not picky.
In the last episode of the new Cosmos series, (someone portraying) Fritz Zwicky appears briefly, to sort of stare and blink and then make a gesture like this. He died in 1974. What is the source of this footage? Is it an actor (with an oddly non-speaking role, and no acknowledgment yet on IMDB), some sort of CGI magic from photos, or archival footage? Our household is unreasonably curious about this.
The post on Genesis the other day reminded me about a TV documentary series I saw which focused on a different band's video clips each week. I'm pretty sure Genesis and Duran Duran were both covered. Googling hasn't helped me. Initially I thought it might have been Classic Albums, but they never covered Genesis. Does anyone know what series this might have been?
I basically want to sob on my couch at how childlike children are and how much parents love them beyond words. [more inside]
I was just wondering if the MeFi Hive Mind might know of good places in Los Angeles to watch the live election returns for the British General Election (May 7, and running into the small hours) ? Preferably a British pub.... Thanks!
