Are there any Kinkos, business centers, copy centers, cybercafes etc. in Los Angeles (downtown, silverlake, west side, ANYWHERE!) where I can pay by the hour to use a really fast (T1) internet access so I can upload 5GB of files to a coworker? I need to get 5GB of video footage to my out-of-country editor tomorrow morning..my DSL upload speed is so freakin slow.. it'll takes 20 hrs... I can fedex a DVD overnight but that would also take 12+ hours..

I need to get the files to him ASAP!

FE 0/1 Port on T1 Cisco Router

My Cisco router at work (we have a T1) has a port in the back labeled "FE 0/0" that feeds to our switch and all our PCs. There's also a port (unused) labeled "FE 0/1". What's it for? I tried running a network cable from it to a PC, and also to another router, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Can it somehow be used to run to another PC?

IP Address Solutions

Need some sort of one-click IP address solution/configuration for laptops that move between offices. Please see the rest inside. I split my time between a jobsite trailer and an office, as does everyone I work with. We all have laptops we take with us from place to place. At the trailer, we just had a T1 installed, and it requires each of us to have a specific IP address, subnet mask, gateway, etc, that we have to punch in manually (they can't be auto-detected). At the office, however, we need to configure our network settings to auto-detect.

Now, I don't have a problem manually entering the info when I'm at the trailer, but I work with a lot of low-tech construction guys and they can never remember how to open their network settings and what to punch in where. Is there some way to make this a 1-click operation, like, an icon on their desktop they can click when they're at the trailer so it'll fill in those addresses automatically?

Some are running Windows 2000, one is running XP.

Thanks.

Please ensmarten me about LAN/WAN/Co-Lo

3 LANS are getting hard to manage. Please ensmarten me about WANs and Colocation. Right now we've got 3 physical sites for the same firm/domain, each with its own MS 2003 server and dataset. This separated setup has worked well to keep the others up and running if one has downtime/problems.

But now we're needing more flexibility / integration across the sites. The VPN we've currenly got has an upload bottleneck at about 500kbps, which is too slow for file transfers, much less application services, between the sites.

So we've set up Terminal Servers at each site, so that if staff at Site A need to use applications or manipulate data that's on Site B's server, they launch Remote Desktop and work on it "at" Site B via RDP.

This is working for now, but it's getting hard to manage all those boxes, back them up, etc.

So I've been thinking about moving from 3 servers with three datasets, one for each location, to one big fat server which consolidates all the data. But I don't know precisely how to locate that server, then serve up that data with speed to the various sites.

If it was just a webserver, that would be one thing - but this is going to be an applications server. And I'm just a recently unfrozen caveman with no knowledge of your "high tech".

So I've got Questions:

1) Say I host the consolidated server at Site A - would Sites B and C basically have to "remote" in to get anything done? (Let's say there was a site to site T1 in place).

2) If that's the case, am I better off just going for a colocator and having everyone working "remotely", with the server serving up desktops for everyone? Can that be done with just a T1 from each office to the colo? (40 users total).

3) If that's the case, then all the workstations basically become thin clients, right? So I can justify the colo expense by saying that we won't have to upgrade every workstation's hardware/software for Vista, right?

4) If all the processing, etc was handled by a fat server in a colo, could Users still have dual monitors? How would Printing work?

5) A different way altogether - keeping the 3 existing servers:
Let's say that the total dataset is 100gb, and there's maybe 3gb of changes made each day.

If there was a point-to-point-to-point T1 connection between the offices, would it be possible to Consolidate the data once, then Clone it onto the other two servers, then keep Replicating any changes?

Such that each site would keep working on its own server on its own LAN, but something in the background would keep each server a mirror of the others? (User adds a document to a folder hosted on Server A. Auto-magic happens and that new file is added to the servers at Sites B and C.) This would keep users from dealing with VPN/remote hassles, and also be good for continuity, as if one server goes down, the other two are identical copies).

This 5) scenario would be ideal, but I don't know if it only exists on the shelf between my personal jetpack and and my Mr. Fusion.

I know this is complex for an AskMeFi, but I need to figure this out while also working overtime and going back to school to learn this kind of stuff. There's lots of knowledge in this hive's mind, so I'm trying to use some of it. If you're in the Bay Area and do this for a living, send me an email.

Is my T1 slow?

I get 3800kbps down on my cable connection at home, but I'm only getting 1300kbps down on my office full T1. How is this possible? Should my office get a better pipe?

Help me understand bandwidth, servers and net speed in general please! I'm looking around for a colo just now, and pricing at the bottom end of the scale. Some places price at 1Mbit/s connections, others at 100GB/mo. On this, I am confused. How do the two relate: could I get the 100GB at varying rates, or is it simply another way of expressing the same thign?

Additionally, 1Mb seems slow: My home broadband (ADSL) for instance, is 8Mbit down, 1Mbit up. Serving from it is way too slow. Is this the same sort of speed I'd be buying from the 1Mbit connection service? T1 lines are 1.5Mb/s, aren't they? They used to be spoken of in hushed tones of awe as being killer for speed -- surely they're not the same thing as my modem is trickling up the pipe? (Ignoring contention ratios here)

Can you clear this up for me?

Problems with Point-to-Point

Hi,

I have two Cisco 2610 routers, each with WIC-1DSU-T1 cards. We have a Point-to-Point between two locations and I am using these to route the traffic between.

The lines belong to Verizon and the AdTran cards are locked in a Verizon box. I can look in and see the status lights through the top. Each location has a RJ48X loopback jack.

When I plug in the Cisco at Location 1 it seems to hook up fine, and the carrier detect light pops up. (Which is strange to me because our PTP is unmonitored and I thought the CD would only come on when equipment is plugged into both ends.)

Then when I go and plug in the Cisco at Location 2, I get no lights, no nothing. I check the lights in the Verizon box and an alarm is triggered with a red LED. I disconnect the Cisco and it clears the alarm.

How can I figure out what the problem is? I had the company that provides the PTP come and check the circuit originally and they said they found problems but that the problems had gone away now. Is it possible that the WIC-1DSU-T1 card in this router is faulty?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks.

DSL is impossible, T1 is expensive. Is there another option?

How can I get internet access for less than $400 a month? The problem: I just moved into a new office in Los Angeles. My officemate pays $400 semolians for a T1 line that is slower than DSL -- indeed, it rivals dial-up in its pokiness. And he wants me to contribute 200 bucks a month.

Why don't we get DSL? Because our building is 13,580 feet from the AT&T node, and the DSL limit is 14,000 feet. AT&T claims it should be possible to get DSL; but officemate insists that multiple techs have already come out, tested the line condition, and declared DSL impossible. (Yet, before the Yahoo merger, there was DSL thruout the building; now everyone pays for the shitty, expensive T1 -- that's $400 for each office, kids.)

Help me stop the insanity. It will make me physically ill to write this guy a check for $200 every month for the privilege of watching the NYT home page crank up like a Model T. (Yes, I know I shoulda asked about internet access before signing the lease -- but it's a great office. Free coffee, dog-friendly. And no, I can't just mooch off of some other office -- I'm the new guy. Also, the solution has to be good for both of us -- I could buy a PC card and get semi-slow internet directly from the sky, but I'd still have to pay the man his 200 bucks.) Thanks!

Can You Use Cable and a T1 for Super Fast Internet?

Can I Use a T1 Line AND a Cable Modem (wirelessly) for Super Fast Internet? My building has several T1 lines for its residents, which I use to connect to the internet. It's fast, but at peak times when everyone's home it gets bogged down. The cable guy is coming today, and I can get cable internet set-up. It's faster, and always on.

My question is, can I keep my existing T1 connection (it's $20/month), connect to it through built-in ethernet (mac), AND, at the same time, connect to my cable modem through a wifi set-up, thus achiecing super fantastic speeds? Or can I have my computer constantly monitor which connection is faster and automatically have it use that connection for data?

Or do I just have to pick one or the other?

Thanks.

My new apartment in New York City came equipped with a built-in ethernet internet connection. So far, I've maxed out at just over 1 meg a second, though that's only happened a few times. Besides downloading media via bittorrent and p2p, what recreational net activities should I take advantage of? What's the best way that I can 'speed test' my top d/l speed?

Also, any guesses on what type of connection I likely have? T1? T3? How would I find this out without bothering my landlord? I live in housing owned by Columbia University, in case anyone's wondering, and the connection's included with our rent.

I'll stop bragging now.
