(UK) mobile phone operator?

Is their a "decent" UK mobile phone operator? The problem with internet in general is that people only ever post a forum post, tweet a tweet, etc, etc about mobile phone operators when something goes bad.

So which network have you been pleased with? I'm talking in terms of price, coverage and customer service.

I've been with Orange, T-Mobile and o2, the worst probably being T-Mobile and the best probably o2.

I would consider 3 but their network coverage isn't that great where I live.

Momma needs a brand new phone

Boyfriend is getting a phone upgrade and handing over to me (same company). Do I buy Internet package for his account or mine? Phone upgrade question (T-mobile). My boyfriend is offered an upgrade for a new phone at a significantly reduced price if he signs up for another two years. He is going to, so that's not the thing. When he gets the phone upgrade (to a blackberry), he will give it to me (also T-mobile) because he doesn't need a new phone and because he's awesome. I've done this for him before with no hitch. Question is: I will have to upgrade to an plan option with Internet included. But do I do that for his account or mine (since I'll be the one using the phone)? Don't really want to call T-mobile and explain this, since they might have a problem with it. I'm thinking it will just be my account, but just double-checking here. Thanks.

Do G1 Android Dream of a Electic Sheep?

Should I get the T-mobile G1 with Google Android? Is there some cooler second generation Android phone coming out in the next 3-4 months that I should be holding out for? I'm currently on T-mobile with their lowest family plan and I've got the cheap upgrade with a 2-year contract. I work on the edge of t-mobiles growing 3G network, but live well outside the 3G coverage. My current phone is the MDA (HTC Wizard). I like the slide out keyboard, but the phone is a bit bulky, and the Windows Mobile 5 OS is still pretty painful, but I do make good use of the reason I switched from palm: multitasking. I like having 2-3 apps running at once, and when it works on WM5, it works well, but regularly this house of cards falls down around my head, often when I try to use the phone portion. A call will come in, but some busy app will hang the interface and I can't get to answer the call, sometimes requiring a soft reset to get the interface back to check my voicemail.

I currently use a 3.5 mm to 2.5 mm adapter to listen to music on my phone, so having to use a USBext to 3.5 mm adapter doesn't seem like such a pain, and perhaps an improvement as I seem to go through a lot of headphone jacks as it is. I wore out the jack on my old palm, and I've started to lose the left channel on my current MDA phone.

Android will have to be better, right?

I'm also a huge linux dork, so the thought of an open OS on the phone really intrigues me. I'd consider an unlocked, jailbroken iPhone, but the lack of a keyboard, and being constantly at war with my OS provider over jailbreaking the phone versus having the new cool software updates seems like a worse headache than sticking with my pretty sucky windows mobile experience.

If you recommend the G1, I do have one other piggyback question: I currently use Google Apps For Your Domain, can I use that account with the Android's login, or will I be forced to resurrect my old @gmail.com login?

T-Mobile @ Home VOIP Opinions Wanted

Anyone have experience with the T-Mobile @ Home VOIP service? I need to lower my phone bill but keep my landline phones. The T-Mobile @ Home service provides local and long-distance service for $10/mo. using a broadband router. I already have T-Mobile cellular service and have been very pleased, so the @ Home service is very tempting. However, there is a 2-yr. contract and I would like to know:

Anyone here have actual experience using the @ Home service? Would like to hear both positive and negative experiences before I make the leap. Thanks!

Virgin Mobile US to T-Mobile UK. Can we connect? My friend is on a Virgin Mobile US phone. I'm on a T-Mobile UK phone. I can SMS her, but she can't text or call me ... can you suggest reasons why this could be?

Virgin Mobile customer service claim that I need to be on a certain network, one of which given is ... the network I'm on!

Help me prove T-Mobile wrong

Can you send an email from your Nokia phone using your T-Mobile service? After ages of frustration, I'm coming to you all to see if I'm nuts.

Some time in the last couple of months I lost a feature on my Nokia 6101, which uses T-Mobile. In short, I used to be able to go to Messages, choose Create Message, choose "Text message," compose the text of the message, and hit Send, after which I would see five items: "Recently used," "To phone number," "To e-mail address," "To many," and "Via sending profile."

Now, however, "To e-mail address" is missing. It simply isn't there. Resetting the phone to factory defaults does not restore it. No amount of fiddling with the settings restores it.

The last T-Mobile person I spoke to as good as called me a liar. She said that the phone has never had that feature, that it couldn't have had that feature, and that there's no way to enable that feature.

But I know it's had that feature because I've used it hundreds of times. I know it, no matter how much the awful, unhelpful people at T-Mobile want to insinuate that I'm making it up. I'm positive it was there—that's how I know it's missing!

In fact, you can find "To email address" in the user manual (page 39). Of course, T-Mobile, like other providers can customize their phones. But if they do delete that feature on shipping phones now, they didn't delete it when I got my phone a couple of years ago.

Now, I don't know why the menu would have disappeared, except that I recently changed my calling plan and added another phone onto the account. There may have been a SIM update push at some point, but I don't know how far back the last one was. The six reps at T-Mobile that I talked to claim that none of these things would make that menu disappear.

So, what I'm looking for here: Do you currently have that "To email address" menu on your Nokia phone (preferably a 6101)? Did you used to have it? Did you lose it? Can you explain?

I realize that the role of "outraged consumer" is a cliché by now. Sorry about that. I'm not the doormat/roll-over-me type. Unfortunately, even if you pay a company hundreds of dollars a month they still have you over the barrel a thousand different ways. The only leverage I have here is community evidence.

Also, I know there are a couple of other ways to send email with the phone, like putting the email address, subject line, and a # sign in the body of the text--but who in the world is going to do that every time? The inconvenience destroys the utility. The old way, the email addresses would show up in "Recently used" and I wouldn't have to retype them time and again. You can also send messages by choosing "Picture message" instead of "Text message," but that includes stupid framing gifs in the body of the message which are annoying to all involved and sometimes mean the messages get marked as spam.

Getting on the cellphone bandwagon (at last).

I live on a quiet, forested country lane with no cellphone service. If I purchase a prepaid "burner" cellphone from T-Mobile, will I be able to use it and add minutes to it as needed? Or am I screwed? My neighborhood is officially a dead zone, and opposition from overzealous environmentalists is destined to keep it that way.

Inspired by posts like this one, I decided to buy a prepaid cellphone from T-Mobile and $100 "Gold Rewards" card to use when I'm driving or visiting nearby cities. But when I called up T-Mobile, I was told that the phones can only be shipped to residences in "live" zones. Corporate policy.

My question is this: If I get the prepaid cellphone and $100 card at a Target located in a "live" zone, will I be able to activate it from the store? And, will I be able to buy new reward cards from Target as needed? Or will activation of the phone result in revealing my address and zip to T-Mobile, and getting the cold shoulder like I did when I attempted my purchase on the phone?

Bonus question: Can the phone, in its locked state, be used in countries outside of the US?

MLB Gameday Audio Mobile on unsupported phone?

Are any of you baseball fans subscribing to MLB's Gameday Audio Mobile and using an unsupported device? If so, how does it work, both quality and ease of setting it up? Piggybacking on an earlier post today, I'm already subscribed to MLB's Gameday Audio, and have a much-too-complicated setup to stream the audio from my home computer to my phone. I'd much rather use their Gameday Audio Mobile service, but their list of supported devices excludes mine (Dash running Windows Mobile 6 Standard on T-Mobile). They say more will be supported in the future, but they've been saying that for a couple of years now.

Is this a service provider issue or really a device issue? Are any of you subscribed to the mobile service with a device/service provider that's not on their official list? Does it work well? Easy to set up? Is this too many questions for a single post?

Bluetooth GPS Tracking

I'm looking for software for my Windows Mobile smartphone + bluetooth GPS brick that will let people log in to a web site and see my current location (preferably in google maps). I have a T-Mobile Dash running WM6 smartphone (with an always-on unlimited GPRS internet connection), and a bluetooth GPS brick (Holux M-1000). I've spent weeks hopelessly Googling for a solution, to no avail. There are quite a few J2ME java programs that seem to do what i want, BUT none of the JVMs for windows mobile support bluetooth, and thus can't read from the GPS brick. One native WM program seems to do exactly what I want (I think it's called "Tracky"), but it's for WM PocketPC (not smartphone) only.

I have a program - Efficasoft GPS Utilities - that logs my position to a file on my phone's storage card. Perhaps someone smarter than me could think of a way to upload this file at certain intervals? I'm fairly technically adept, so solutions that involve running a server on a home computer are no problem. I just don't know where to start.

How do I unbrand an unlocked phone?

Unlocked phone, but I want to "unbrand" it. How? So I've got an unlocked Motorola MOTORIZR Z3, which I want to use with AT&T.
It was originally a T-Mobile phone, and I think they're the only ones in the US who carry it.

It works with an AT&T SIM to make calls, and I've found instructions on setting up messaging/browser connections that look like I can follow them (knock wood) to get it working on AT&T's network.

But it still has all the T-Mobile, t-zones, etc branding & firmware all over the menus, etc.

But I'd like to get rid of all that branding. How?

I've spent hours trying to decipher posts on MotoModders, etc, but it's all alien language.

Can anyone point me at:

1) a guide to acquiring and installing generic or custom firmware/OS, that a reasonably clever layperson could follow?

2) someone who would do it for me? I'm in San Francisco, CA, USA.

Can I SSH with T-Mobile Hotspot in hotel?

The hotel I'm at uses T-Mobile HotSpot (or whatever..) for the wifi. It seems to work fine for web browsing, but I can't seem to use any ssh clients to connect to work and get any real work done.

I've seen that others have also had problems with this. As far as I can tell it's just an issue of outgoing port blocking, and (from previous questions) there's nothing much to be done. I've called hotel support but it is just T-Mobile support, and moronic. I really don't feel like dealing with people.

Am I just out of luck? Apologies if this isn't the most lucid of questions. It's been a long week.

It's a Windows machine. I just got the laptop today and haven't been able to try any other OSs on it.

Give me internet and phone too

Help me use my phone's internet on my laptop, without disabling the phone. The phone is on Tmobile & has internet access. I want to use the phone's(Dash) internet on a laptop. Apparently you can buy a module that you plug the sim card into and put that into the laptop and voila, free internet access via the internet that the phone has.

But that disables the phone. Of course the option offered by them was to get a second line with internet on it - but no, you can't just get that, you'd have to get a phone plan as well, which ends up being forty or fifty bucks.

How can I have a working phone (at least receive calls) and use the free internet through the phone (Dash)? Is there a way to tap into the internet the phone has without taking the sim card out of the phone?

The phone can't be useless for large blocks of time.
Is there some other option?

On my phone's browser, I need an option other than "Yes, always ask". Help? T-Mobile USA carrier.
Motorola RIZR Z3.

I've dismissed the weak built-in T-Mobile browser for the phone and installed Opera Mini, which is is perfect for me and works great on the phone.

BUT...

Every time I change the URL (by clicking on a link, choosing one of my bookmarks, etc.) I get the following screen:

URL:
http: 195.189.xxx.xx:xx

() Yes, Always Ask
() No, Ask Later
() No, Never Grant Access

I would really like there to be a "() Yes, Always Allow" option. Going through the Allow sequence every time I change pages is getting old.

Any help? Is it T-Mobile, or Motorola, or the java code for the browser, or ?

Termninate a contract = terminate service?

When referring to T-Mobile, is contract termination the same as service termination? I'd like to use T-Mobile's intention to raise SMS rates as evidence of a material change in service, which will allow me to void my nearly-two-years-to-go contract. However I'm not really interested in terminating my service right now.

The way I look at it, the contract is for providing service at a given rate for a given period of time in exchange for buying my handset at a substantially lower-than-retail price. There are T-Mobile subscribers who remain customers after their contract expires without having to renew said contract. Will T-Mobile allow me to remain a customer if I want to legally terminate my contract?

Free Service or A La Carte?

Free T-mobile data service, or is there a catch (a la carte service)? Back in January, I was paying for T-mobile's Blackberry data service ($19.99/mo), but then turned it off due to losing my phone (old backup phone was very basic). Since then, I've found my phone, put in a new SIM card (the old one was deactivated the same day I canceled the Blackberry service) and was surprised to see that I could still use Opera (full version) and was able to pop email. I called T-mobile to see if I might still be paying for a data service, but was told I was not. Am I getting something for free (even if only temporarily?) or is there some kind of a la carte data service T-mobile is offering that I can't find on their website? I'd rather not directly ask T-mobile because, well, I'd like to enjoy the goodtimes while they last. I'm in the Bay Area.

Which quad-band GSM phone should I start a T-Mobile account with?

Which quad-band T-Mobile (U.S.) phone should I buy? I'm primarily trying to decide if it's worth the extra money to get a RAZR v3t or a v195 (of course, NOT a regular v3 - I've heard about people having all sorts of problems with the old ones, but have heard that everything is in theory basically fixed with the v3t/c/m/i).

I don't really see myself using the camera or mp3 player on the v3t much, since I've already got both a better camera and an iPod (and besides, I've seen both its photos and some video on YouTube -- they're crap), and honestly, I couldn't care less about it being that much slicker a design, but if it could handle J2ME programs (Google Maps, inter-language translators etc.) better, that might be good, but I'm not planning on getting a data plan unless there's such a thing as an always-on Java SMS program that would work as well as regular SMS (notify me when I get a message and so on). Plus, I've heard that the battery lasts longer on the v195.

At the same time, I've heard that the RAZR's got better sound quality. It looks like the Samsung t519 Trace is the only other quad-band that T-Mobile offers, and I've heard that it's quiet and has poor battery life. So, question of the moment: Motorola RAZR v3t, Motorola v195, Samsung t519, or some unlocked quad-band GSM phone from another company? Any recommendations or horror stories? Thanks!

I have a Nokia smartphone. I have T-Mobile. But T-Mobile doesn't sell my phone, so they won't give me a smartphone unlimited data plan and I'm stuck with the much more expensive Total Internet package. But if I log in to T-Mobile's self service site, I can tell them I have any damn phone I like. So if I do that, and tell them I have a Blackberry or a Sidekick, and pick the BB or SK smartphone plans, is there some technical reason it won't just work? Am I in any serious danger of cancellation by violating the TOS or anything else?

Unlocked smart phone

Any problems using an unlocked Treo 680 on T-Mobile? I am tired of lugging around a PDA, pager, and cell phone everywhere I go, so I am going to make the leap to a smart phone.

For work, I need a Palm OS (not windows) device. Unfortunately, I am near the beginning of a 2 year T-Mobile contract.

I can get work to reimburse me the cost of the device, so spending money on an unlocked device isn't a huge problem, but they won't pay for the service, so I'd like to avoid switching to a new carrier (and T-mobile has been great so far, though I've never used their data plan).

Will this work seamlessly? Or will I spend an entire day setting the thing up and still find things don't work perfectly? I am willing to consider other Treos, but the 680 is very sexy and is the first device I could see carrying around everywhere.

T-Mobile has eaten away at my soul. What can I do now, if anything? Long rant inside. On Saturday, I received a telephone call from Bay Area Credit, the collection agency for T-Mobile. I was told that a bill for $60.83 was unpaid since June. This seemed very strange to me, since I have always paid my bills in full and never been late. The collection agent told me the account number for the unpaid bill (which I neglected to write down), and I saw that it differed from my T-Mobile account. I asked the representative about this, and was told that a new account was opened on June 11, and then the line was transferred to my existing account later in the month. (She told me the exact date, but again I did not write it down.) In fact, I had added a telephone to my Family Share plan on June 11th. I didn’t open a new account however. I found my T-Mobile contract, and it is clear that I signed up to an addition line to my existing plan at $9.99 per month. Upon hearing this, the representative said I should speak to a supervisor, but because it was a Saturday, no supervisor was available. She then suggested that I fax in my T-Mobile contract and wait 7-10 business days for an answer.

On Sunday, I called T-Mobile. I wanted to make sure that the collection agent wasn’t some sort of scam, and I wanted to get more information about the delinquent account. The representative looked up my information and saw that I did have two accounts listed, and that one had been sent to the collection agency. I asked him for the account number, explaining that I had neglected to write it down the previous day. He read off the first three numbers, then stopped and told me he needed to put me on hold while he collected some more information. After a few minutes, he came back and told me that because the account was now in the hands of the collection agency, he could not give me any more information. I asked to speak to his supervisor. I asked her the account number and she answered “We do not have that information to give out.” I asked her what address the bills were sent to, and received the same answer. I asked her the total amount of the bill and got the same answer again. I pointed out to her that it was clear that T-Mobile does in fact have the information, since I was just given the first few digits of the account number, and she finally explained that she does have all the information I was requesting, but she was obligated not to tell me anything and that I could only deal with the collection agency directly. She also recommended that I call Bay Area Credit first thing in the morning. If I waited longer, major damage could be done to my credit.

This morning, things started getting very strange. I called back Bay Area Credit, once again explaining this whole mess to the agent. I told her that I thought this might be a case of identity theft, since I clearly never opened another account. She suggested I talk to T-Mobile about my situation. After I told her that T-Mobile wouldn’t talk to me, she said that I should just pay the $60 since T-Mobile had determined that the charge was legitimate. I explained that I was willing to pay if I owed the money, but I wanted to know exactly what I was paying and why I had another account open. When she couldn’t help me further, I asked to speak to her supervisor.

Richard Anthony, the Bay Area Credit supervisor, was on the offensive even before I had a chance to speak. He accused me of screaming at his staff and his clients. (In fact, I was able [barely] to stay calm and polite through this entire ordeal.)When I asked him how the account could have been opened without my permission, he sarcastically asked if I thought he was my personal financial advisor. When I explained that I never received any bills for that account, he accused me of falsifying my address to T-Mobile. When I asked if he could send me a written bill, he said I would probably stop payment on the check I sent. He then told me that I had ten seconds to agree to pay the bill immediately by credit card or he would hang up, cut off my current cell phones and destroy my credit.

Of course I paid. $60 is certainly not worth the damage that would be otherwise be wrought. But I am boiling inside. I have never in my life been treated like this. The tangible loss is minor, but the intangible loss is eating away at my soul. What, if anything can I do now?

Cheapskate seeks Ericsson phones!

I'm a big fan of the Ericsson interface, though my current phone (T637) is on its last legs. Sony has come out with a ton of great phones recently, all vast improvements on what I have, and almost none of which I afford. A few years ago, major wireless carriers could be counted on to heavily discount the newest latest freshest phones, especially Ericssons, and now only ONE carrier (Cingular) sells ANY of them, and they only have the two bottom-of-the-line models. Anyone have any advice or inside information before I bite the bullet and get the cheapo model? The types of phones I've been lusting after:
k790a/k800i, w850i, k510i, etc.

The full story (including tangental rant):

Been "sitting on" my upgrade status with Cingular, not wanting to blow it on something unworthy and getting stuck with it for 2 years.

Yesterday, they release the "alright" w300i, a great price at $94 (+mail-in $75 Cingular bill-credit =$19) w/2-year contract. So I jump on it. And the online store is screwed up and won't take my order. And the customer-service folks tell me the online discount is not available by phone and I should try again tomorrow. Which I do, and find out that they've upped the price $20 during that time. And that they've removed a lot of the "stock" features from the phone for their sale version like the built-in memory card and headphones. Bleh.
(FYI: I called customer-service back and they won't honor yesterday's price)

Free of a contract, I checked other carriers, only to find out (as I stated above) that NO other US carrier sells ANY other Ericsson phones at all. Craigslist isn't quite doing it for me. Low-rent etailers or possibly-sketchy eBay vendors abound for some of my more-desired models, but they're still the difference between paying $19-$149 and $449-549. One I can currently afford, the other, I can't.

It's technically possible that Cingular or other carriers might start selling other SE models at some point (though customer service reps obviously don't have this information), but I've been waiting 2 years already and my phone is starting to fade.

So I guess the main question is: Do I go ahead and drop $114 (+fees & taxes, -mail-in rebate) on the so-so phone, or wait, or find some other way to get a better one?

Or, does anyone have any inside scoop as to whether any carriers are going to show Sony some love for the holidays, or whether they've been blackballed?

No cell coverage in our new home. What to do?

Our cell phones don't get coverage in our new home. Can I get out of my contract, and how do I find out who had coverage for our street/area? We just moved one mile down the road and now we don't have cell phone coverage (we're lucky if we can get one bar and that's on a good day).

We contacted T-mobile and all they said was that they'd let the field technicians know, but that doesn't guarantee that they'll do anything about it and they won't let us out of our contract.

Now we're stuck with two cell phones that don't get coverage in our home.

My questions are...

1) Is it possible that we can get our of our cell phone contract because of no coverage - has anyone done this before?

2) If we CAN get out of our cell phone contract, how do I find out who has coverage for this area - I'm guessing very few. I've gone to verizon and cingular coverage maps and they don't give good detail about local coverage.

GSM Newbie Questions

I'm about to acquire the object of my gadget lust. I'm new to the GSM world, and am looking for opinions about whether I should take this phone to T-Mobile or Cingular for service. (Other GSM newbie questions inside.) I've been a Sprint user for years, but I'm tired of poor build quality on Treos, and I'm ready for something new. I'm convinced the E70 is the phone for me, but there's no North American version yet. So I'm taking the plunge and getting the European model which doesn't include 850MHz coverage.

I've done the math, and it looks like my monthly costs for a modest voice plan, a modest text messaging plan, and unlimited data would be similar, so that's not an issue. What I'm really looking for is this:

* Do both networks offer good coverage in major metropolitan areas with 1900MHz-only phones?

* Are both data plans equivalent, or are there pitfalls I won't learn about from their marketing materials?

* Assuming I also pick up a cheap 850MHz compatible phone for use when I'm out of 1900MHz coverage, is there any problem on either network swapping SIM cards?

Bonus question: Anyone have good or bad expeirences with MobileBee?

Thanks!

It's my own damn file...

Adding DRM to a ringtone I have a Samsung T809 through T-Mobile. As phones go, I'm more than happy with it, but there is one significant exception. T-mobile has gone out of their way to make it impossible for me to use my own ringtones.

I know that earlier versions of the firmware allowed for exploites that made it possible for someone to use a ringtone that they didn't download/ pay for, but I just got this phone and it has a newer firmware that prohibits this. My searches have, thus far only revealed how to make this work with the older firmware.

Having ruled out using a normal file type, I'm OK with just adding DRM to a ringtone I've created. It seems to be the only way I'm going to be able to get my phone to make the noise that I want it to make.

I'm pretty sure that T-Mobile uses OMA DRM, but I'm not positive.

By way of explination, I don't want to use this for anything illegal. I have no intrest in how to make someone elses copyrighted file work. I prefer ringtones that are unobtrusive and would like to take some more 'natural' noises (read as: my bird singing) and make it into my ringtone. I already have the AIFF/WAV and just am looking for a free or cheap way of adding the necessary DRM to the file to make the phone see it as acceptable.

Since I don't expect to ever transfer this file to anyone, and T-Mobile has done a remarkable good job at messing up an otherwise great phone, I'm guessing that DRMing my own file is the only way to go, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
