Can anyone think of a movie in which the protagonist is a key witness in a trial but the movie doesn't show the trial and the protagonist is consistently under attack for testifying?

What are your favourite examples of building tension or suspense in literature? Ideally these are brief moments, single paragraphs or small scenes, compelling the reader to continue on, worried about what will follow. [more inside]

Please help me find the title of this book for a friend. It's about a woman and her husband who are involved in a plane crash. Everyone aboard was killed, except for the couple. The wife is an art dealer. [more inside]
Can you help me find some audiobooks that are relatively fast-paced and simple, but also have good dialogue, characters, and themes? Even if you don't listen to audiobooks, maybe you know page-turners or beach reads that are deeper than the normal fluff? Or maybe you know good literary fiction that is simple and fast-paced? Looking for a thriller mass-market paperback novel that I read in the late 1990s that was about brilliant students at a medical school - murder, conspiracy, etc. [more inside]
I need some well-written and very suspenseful books to take my mind off of a 25-hour flight. Donna Tartt's "The Secret History" is the ideal book, but alas, I've already read it. I also need two-person travel sized games. [more inside]
A recent question asked for recommendations for "trash" reading. I am also interested in reading some "trash", particularly horror or suspense trash, but I am squeamish. Please hope me. [more inside]
Movies with a certain atmosphere really hit the spot when life gets me down. The top three movies that match this mood are Winters Bone
, Eastern Promises
, and Mystic River
. Can you think of others I might like? [more inside]
I'm looking for instrumental, soundtrack-type (but not necessarily a soundtrack), and suspenseful/eerie/dark music. I'm interested in music that sounds something like Clint Mansell's Lux Aeterna
and The Inception Dream is Collapsing
, but in more of a suspenseful, even creepy tone.
Think of Alfred Hitchcock-- that kind of drawn-out, building tension. [more inside]
I just spent the weekend watching Breaking Bad, a show that is brilliant and full of intensely unpleasant moments of tension. I'm looking for books, shows, or movies that produce similar feelings of dread. The Shield offered something like this, as well as No Country for Old Men, The Strain, BSG, The Road, and parts of Justified. Any recommendations? (Extra points for anything available to watch on Netflix Instant)
Literary eerie suspense novelists: I've read and loved a certain type of author and I am looking for more like them. Their main novel tropes are unreliable narrators (i.e., are they being haunted by a ghost or their own mind?) and a good balance of suspense and philosophy (well-paced novels of ideas with likable, believable characters). Prose style is literary and intelligent but not metafictional. [more inside]

With very few exceptions I have never really liked anime. Recently I watched Death Note on hulu and got a huge kick out of it. I'd like to watch some more anime that isn't about people who are awesome at fighting fighting other people who are awesome at fighting and is generally suspenseful and tightly serialized. I just finished reading Scott Smith's "The Ruins" and loved it. I want to read more books like this (and his original "The Simple Plan"). Basically, I want all the suspense and horror, but the people have to seem real to me. I don't have to like them, I just want to know what they are thinking/feeling/fearing so that they aren't just numbers on some gorefest scoreboard. Bonus points if the author is semi-prolific, so I have choices for further reading. Help me, hive mind!
I read a short story that was included as part of a compilation of horror/suspense stories about 10 years ago. I totally forgot the name of the story and really want to read it again. [more inside]
Haunted by a movie.
About ten years ago I was in France and I saw a chilling suspense movie on late-night TV. I'm not sure that it was French - maybe Dutch or German, with subtitles? I remember little: the music-box/bells theme, the murderer's slow grace, and a scene where the detective fills a room with steam to recover a victim's traced final message. A little more (and a spoiler) inside. [more inside]
