Informing my plot: in case of disaster, what would YOU do?

This year, I'm turning 50 and my goal is to finish one post-apocalypse novel before my birthday (given that I started writing in that genre age 12). So, without telling my story here, and thus rendering it unnecessary to write, please tell me... [more inside]

Based On Actual Events Fodder: Survival Stories that aren't all dudes

My BF and I saw an ad for the upcoming Deep Water Horizon movie, and I commented that there seem to be a lot of these "men trapped in desperate situations" movies. He wanted suggestions for "based on actual events" that aren't exclusively men. Trying to google turned up a lot of unhelpful results. Any ideas?

How do I live in my car for a while?

So, as posted last week, I'm taking a big trip through the southwest. I'll have a car (Jeep grand cherokee) I can sleep in, a tent, a propane cookstove of some sort (plus pots and such), a good ice chest, some money, and clothes. What do I need to know to successfully survive this trip? [more inside]

I watched "Human Planet" and now I must know more!

I binge-watch Human Planet this weekend, and it was the most fascinating thing I've seen in a long time. It is an 8 episode show about how humans survive in different habitats: ocean, river, mountains, grassland, arctic, desert, jungle etc. But it covers SO much that there isn't much depth to each thing they talk about. I must know more! I have so many questions. Where can I learn more? [more inside]

How to disguise yourself as a man

Hi there, I am a female who is in college studying to become a war correspondent, and this has been my unshakeable goal for many years. I would like to know how to successfully disguise myself as a man with the use of minimal makeup, masculine attire (etc.), and all the while keeping my hair shoulder or waist length. My main concern is that while I'm very thin, I have very, very feminine and delicate facial structure, so I feel like this could really really affect the success of my career as a future war zone journalist.

Spanish/Portuguese term for Captain of Emergencies in the Age of Sail?

Years ago, someone from Portugal mentioned a concept and position on large European seafaring boats, who was on the boat to ward off disaster, or to take the helm if one occurred. They said there was a word in Portuguese for this concept - someone who is prized for being able to rescue catastrophic situations. Does anyone know this word or concept? [more inside]

What's the name of this kids' scifi anthology I remember?

I read this book of short stories years ago, and for some reason I remember most of the stories in it but have had no luck with Googling for it. Must be that the stories' premises were creative enough or caught my imagination in a particular way. The most memorable story was about trying to survive on Earth after a supernova. I'm pretty sure these are all from the same book: [more inside]

How do decent human beings live with pedophilia?

I'm obviously not talking about people who act on it. But we don't choose our fetishes, and I've read a few tortured anonymous accounts of people who don't want to molest children and will never act on it, but nevertheless suffer with that compulsion. So I'm wondering what resources they use to cope. [more inside]

I need my fix of dramatic re-enactments

Where on earth can I find a copy of all the seasons of "I shouldn't be alive"? I've torrented it off one site, but there are about 15 episodes missing and it's not clear what seasons they're missing from because the show was bought by another channel at one point and all the episodes got mixed up. I would by it legally if I could but Animal Planet.com, Amazon and eBay don't have anything other than seasons 1-3. I'm in Australia, btw.

I choo-choose you! To be the train car most likely to let me live!

In two of this year's notable high-speed train derailments--Compostella in Spain in July and the New York Metro North crash on Sunday--the train driver survived, but many of the passengers and crew, who were presumably in cars further back from the engine car, did not. Is there any data from any safety board (NTSB or similar in other countries) that suggests any particular train cars are more safe than others in the event of a derailment? [more inside]
