There seems to be a trend among older women, at least in Baltimore (mainly African-American ladies, but I have seen Hispanic and Caucasian women do this as well), of matting down hair with some sort of oil. The goal seems to be to get as much hair as possible as close to the scalp as possible. The bangs are then stuck to the forehead, and it looks like this is purely oil based. As I haven't yet had the kahones to ask one of these lovely ladies what's up with the hair, I was hoping someone knew:
A. What sort of product is being applied to get this "just out of the oil bath" look?
B. Is this an every morning thing, or do you apply just once a week? Once a month?

Top of my head hair is straighter than the under hair of my head, which is fairly curly. What can I do/use to help the top hair be curlier? Please save me from my 30 minute routine of blow drying and flat ironing.... [more inside]

I have very short, straight hair (pixie cut) and I find it easiest to style the day after the day I shower. I think something about the extra oil gives it more body. When I shampoo and condition, it's very soft and clean (good) but lies flat and has no shape (bad). How to address this? [more inside]

My other half really wants me to get the modern shag hair style like Brad Pitt's. I have long hair at the moment and I'm not too keen on the change... I think it's too feminine (pink is not the new black) and outdated. Am i being too stubborn?

Seattle or Eastside: Recommendations for a hairdresser specializing in trendy cuts for men, despite the formidable obstacle of seriously thinning hair. This may be my last chance to look young, hot, and fashionable, before my hair declares to the world the world "Going on middle aged and should know better by now!".
I have long hippy hair that has never been fashionable. It's disappearing and I'd like a trendy cut at least once before it's too late. It may already be too late. I fear a stylist is going to misjudge how thin it is (the length disguises this) and botch it. So: Who is a miracle-worker hairstylist who can give guys makeovers to hotness?

So I always have boring haircuts. Standard businessman cut type. Cause I'm lazy and hate having to do anything with it in the morning. And this morning I realized it is now at the point where it needs to be cut as it's looking, well, like it needs to be cut. (How it looks right now: me1,
me2,
me3, though for some reason in the pics it looks a lot less in need of cleanup than it does in real life.)
So I'd like to do something a bit more interesting, a bit more daring. Not much, but a little. I'm kind of in a turning myself around mentally state, and it's passing over into things like this. And you know what style (roughly) I like? David Tennant-ish messy. Seen here and here.... [more inside]

as a civil-libertarian i greatly appreciated al gore's fiery speech on C-SPAN today. while the former vice-president looked a little heavier, i noticed his hair was much thicker than it was in the 2000 presidential race. did he get a hair transplant or is he combing his hair differently?

If a man is described as having a close-cropped haircut, I picture a nearly-shaved head. But if it's a woman, I see something like a bob. It is just due to the shortness being relative to what is normal for that sex, or does it mean only one of these to you?
