Making student loan payments stirred this question. I am trying to figure out a few things, specifically surrounding 3-day loan payoffs, payments that are scheduled but not withdrawn immediately, and interest that accrues in the meantime.

My loans were recently transferred from Direct Loans (the government) to a private servicer (VSAC). I am almost sure that someone somewhere made an error, because my new bills are blowing my mind. I was silly enough to throw away my old payment receipts. Who do I call to get my old records of payments and to make sure the new people aren't messing up my account?

Ten years ago, my younger sister, at age 18.5, co-signed her then-boyfriend's student loan. He defaulted almost immediately. The creditors were after her for years, threatened wage garnishment, she negotiated with them and finally started paying them five years ago. She has now paid it down to 30k. The $200/month payment for her ex's student loans is a pretty significant fraction of her income. Is there anything that she can do legally or is she just stuck with the debt? She recognizes what she did was dumb, and that she is legally responsible for what she did.

I defaulted on my student loan and entered into an agreement with a third-party debt collector to repay. That loan has now been "transferred" to another agency that seems to be pretty sleazy, although I've been assured by my original lender that this new company will honor the terms of the agreement I had with the first collection agency. Is this my best option, or should I be doing something else?

recent discussion on Metafilter, and a smaller living stipend than I expected, have me second guessing what I thought was a great opportunity. Details inside...

Suddenly my loans are being serviced by nelnet even though I consolidated with the Department of Education. I have been able to vaguely gather that this was enacted along with the new student loan provisions, presumably to not completely drive companies like nelnet and sallie mae out of business. I have a few questions related to this which I have not been able to solve in my research. The first is, what is the specific act and section that this fell under? (More inside)...

I have about 56,000 in private student loans from Citibank. They are at a variable interest rate. The interest rate right now is, of course, very low. When interest rates inevitably go back up, these loans are going to get very expensive. I have been unable to find anyone who will consolidate or refinance these loans.

I’m in grad school and work full time. I have several Federal student loans in deferment, all of which are subsidized or unsubsidized with different interest rates. I have an extra $500 each month that I'd like to use towards my loans. If I want to have lower monthly payments when my loans go into repayment, should I make extra payments now towards the interest from unsubsidized loans with a lower interest rate or the principal of subsidized loans with a higher interest rate? Or is there a better approach?
