I just purchased an underpowered computer to experiment further with remote desktops.
Ideally I'd like to be able to use a remote desktop technology to stream HD video from the remote server, play a game on the client that's rendered on the more powerful server, and to have a local user work on the remote serving computer while another account on the server is being accessed remotely by the thin client.

A con I help run has video art programming which we'd like to stream to people who cannot attend the convention. However, the infrastructure for livestreaming at this venue is prohibitively restrictive. Hence I'm looking for a service that would allow me to upload, say, an mp4 and schedule when it would begin streaming.

I would like to know what options are available to me to enhance (or indeed the opposite) video streams - What I'd specifically like to do is download specific youtube footage (personal use) and render it with a jumpy black and white Pathe film-like quality. What would be the best approach to achieve this? - And please take into account that I have no Apple products to hand and very limited experience in manipulating the moving picture.

Does anyone know of a Netflix or Hulu type streaming video service that is accessible outside of the U.S., in Japan specifically? No doubt Japan has its own such services, but I am considerably less than fluent in Japanese, so I am looking for English and English subtitled films/television. Also, I wouldn't be able at this point to navigate the Japanese services' websites, so I probably am looking for a U.S based service that allows overseas access. Thanks a lot.

At my company, we recently started recording our internal talks/seminars. I want to set it up so that people can watch these later directly through their web browser. So, basically, looking for self-hosted video streaming server software (kind of like a YouTube/Vimeo from inside the firewall). Are there free alternatives to
Adobe Flash Media Server? I'm currently looking at Apache with the
h264 Streaming Module and
JW Player. But is there anything that just works seamlessly? Copy an .MP4 file to a directory, give it a name in a form and a URL is generated for you?

What's the best way to watch live tv (sports mainly) on a PC? My gf's parents have a vacation cabin with only internet access and they want to be able to watch live sports while they are there. What's the best option. Her mother asked me about "Digital TV for PC" but I think it's a scam. They do have full cable at their main home so I was thinking of advising Slingbox. Anything else out there that won't require me installing hardware at their main home?
Thanks!

I produce a YouTube show about media literacy/criticism. Right now we post weekly, on a schedule which is driving me insane. Does frequency of publishing new content matter (whether it's for a blog, a podcast, a comic, etc) so long as you publish regularly? Could I do it every other week or monthly without losing people's attention? And what do you suggest doing to help make up for less-frequent publishing?

I'm looking for a way for a macro program (RoboTask is the one I'm currently using) to tell whether or not a streaming video has completed playing. I think the best way to do this would be to monitor the current download rate to my PC, and when it drops to 0 kb/s for a second or longer, then trigger the video completion event. I have no idea how to do this, however.
