St. Augustine Essay Ideas

I'm going crazy trying to come up with a topic for a paper on St. Augustine on Memory (ie, book X of the Confessions). I've been trying for days and I just am such a blank. Help brainstorming? I need to be arguing something.
Thanks!

Sushi. Seattle. Sell me.

Where to get sushi on Friday/Saturday nights in Seattle? Visiting Seattle in a few weeks for one weekend. Looking for good sushi on the less expensive side in downtown Seattle (preferably around Pike St. area, but within a mile or so from there is fine). I have googled around a bit and found a lot of places that look alright (and reviews going back and forth) but I know Mefites in the area will probably be WAY more reliable. Let's hear it, Seattle...where's the best sushi?

St Louis

What to do in St Louis tomorrow? Ok, I've been in Illinois all week, and now have friday to myself in St Louis. I'm probably going to be up and atom around 9. thinking zoo, but it might be raining, so maybe science museum. Should I consider any other sights? I'll have roughly a 5 hour window and would actually prefer to do something a bit more meaningful if it's a possibility. I have a car.

I've already convinced myself to skip the Arch. Seen it, think it's neat, but can't see any reason why I would possibly want to go inside it. Also went to St Louis Union Station tonight for dinner.

Where to camp near St. Louis?

Where can I go camping near St. Louis? There are only a few things I would prefer for any site:

1) I would be biking to the location, so it would have to be within 25 to 30 miles of my home in University City.

2) It would hopefully be free.
The wife and I will be taking our four month old baby on an Amtrak train from Chicago to St. Louis. Does anybody have any recommendations for surviving this? Specific insight on the following would be appreciated:
-Whether or not to keep the baby in the car seat as much as possible.
-The availability of changing stations on the train.
-Where to park near Union Station where I won't get charged an arm and a leg for overnight parking

Recharging creative battery in St. Louis

I have decided that this April I want to take a trip to St. Louis, MO. I don’t know anything about St. Louis, which is exactly why I want to go. I don’t know anyone from there, or anyone who has been there. I was wondering if anyone could possibly suggest a good part of St. Louis I could make my temporary home. Posted for a friend:

I am an occasional writer, and sometimes I get so caught up in day-to-day stuff that I totally lose my mojo. So, every four years or so, I like to take a 2-week break from everything in my life and go somewhere I have never been, all by myself, just to clear my head and be someplace new… and hopefully to get inspired and do some writing. I like to stay in one place and get a feel for one area of the city. No “sightseeing” per se… I like being in one section or district and act like I live there.

I like being in areas that have a lot of “cool” activity, as these areas have the most personality. When I went to Seattle, I spent most of my time on Capitol Hill. When I went to Phoenix, I spent most of my time in Tempe on Mill Avenue. When I went to New York I stayed in the Hell’s Kitchen area. When I went to San Francisco I lived in the Mission District, which was the best. I live in LA – if I were to come here, I would probably spend my time in Santa Monica or Venice, probably on Lincoln Boulevard or Abbott Kinney.

Thanks for any advice!

Where to buy an interesting engagement ring in St. Louis?

Where to buy an interesting (non-diamond) engagement ring in St. Louis? So I proposed with a kids' plastic spider ring. She said yes. I figured it would be better if we went shopping together for a ring. But we don't want to go to a Shaneco or any other of those chains (for both the screwjob and the blood diamond reasons), and (being a geologist) she's more interested in something other than a diamond.

The one weird friend who's well-versed in such things suggested Timekeepers, which was nice, but rings aren't their focus really. Most of our friends aren't married yet, and all of my sisters have rather generic rings. Where can we find a larger selection of eclectic and/or vintage rings?

Great place to live in St Louis?

I’ve accepted a new job in St Louis and am moving up with the family from the Florida panhandle this summer. Are there any recommendations for good neighborhoods? Our stats: both 40 with a 12yo boy; I’ll be working in the SE part of town (on South 2nd street). I found a post about a year ago on the subject talking about “McHouses in the suburbs”. While we don’t want a cookie-cutter development, we are both used to living in smaller towns and don’t want to live directly in the city. Definitely want a house with some kind of yard for kid(s)/pets. Since property went through the roof in Florida (and elsewhere), we have a decent amount to work with - $200k to $270k range. As I’ll be working near the river, is living in Illinois an option - any tax advantages there? I’ve already heard about not living near I-40. We were looking in the St Charles area until my new boss said it will take over an hour to get to work from there. I have yet to visit St Louis and am trying to get as much info as possible before a house-hunting trip. Do a house search for our criteria in our town – get about 50 hits. Do a search in the St Louis area – get over 1,000 hits! It’s a little over-whelming. Thanks in advance!

St. Louis Wedding Locale

St Louis Wedding Locations: My fiancee and I are planning on getting married next spring (2008) in the St. Louis area. Neither of us is very religious, so we're looking for recommendations for ceremony locations that are not in a church. Of course, there's Details:

- It should be an indoor location, as spring in STL is still pretty cold.

- We tentatively have about 100-150 guests, but if you know of smaller locations, let us know anyway - we're flexible on that number

- Our budget is reasonable, so we're willing to entertain all kinds of options, from all-inclusive deals to places that we'll have to decorate ourself

Thanks for your help!

Help a Cruise n00b!

Tomorrow I embark on a cruise (Carnival) for the Caribbean. (First time cruiser!) Specifically Nassau, Saint Thomas and St. Maarten. Looking for any tips, things we shouldn't miss, and a couple of ship-related questions inside... We're looking for any tips, things to do or see, etc. I really have no idea what to expect - I have an image in my head of being dumped off at a dock, sucked into foot traffic that corrals me into shops that sell overpriced trinkets to the people fresh off the boat. I usually like to get away from the 'tourist traps', but don't know if there is much to see besides the 'touristy things' - plus I am nervous about going off the tourist paths and possibly not getting back to the boat on time. Also not terribly interested in activities high in physical exertion. I do like photography so any good photo spot recommendations would be appreciated.

Also - regarding the ship itself, I suppose this would apply to any ship in Carnival's line:

- I have heard of people's alcohol bill exceeding that of their cruise ticket price. I plan on drinking frequently. How could I bring my own supply of alcohol on board? We were told to put locks on our luggage, but then I read elsewhere that they go through your luggage. That seems rather invasive. Are they x-raying your luggage looking for bottles of liquid? Any other suggested methods of getting alcohol on board? (I do plan on buying drinks on board, but if I can get a bottle of vodka through I'll be a happy man.)

- Internet access: I know they have an internet cafe, and they say they have WiFi if you bring your own laptop (which I intend to do - gotta get my MeFi fix!) I thought that if they offer WiFi, then it would be free internet, but the person I'm traveling with seems to think that would not be the case. Does anyone know if the WiFi is free? How would they make you pay for it otherwise? If they do charge, does anyone know what the going rate is?

- Onboard Casino - anything wrong with hitting the blackjack tables? I like blackjack and I know that's one game they can't fix in their favor - unless the rules are somehow different than the standard. (Dealer plays to 21? :-) I'd love to play some Texas Hold 'em but I doubt they have those kinds of games on the ships.

- Tipping: I know gratuity is included in a lot of the things, but is there any benefit to tipping additionally? IE, if I leave a few dollars as a tip after dinner should I hope for better service the next time, or if ordering a drink at the bar could I expect my next drink to be a little bit stronger? Is that just a waste of money? Or do they even accept additional cash tips?

- I'm a smoker - I imagine all rooms are non-smoking as we weren't asked a preference. Are there designated smoking areas? Or are the cruise ships 'all smoking' a la Las Vegas?

Any other onboard things two people in their early 30s should make it a point to see or do, anything I should avoid?

For specifics, I will be leaving from Port Canaveral on the Carnival Glory.

Thanks for your suggestions and sorry for the long post! :-)

Herbal remedy for depression?

I need advice from people who have experience taking herbal remedies / vitamins, specifically for depression. I was diagnosed with clinical depression and panic disorder about two years ago and was prescribed the highest dosage of Paxil. It definitely helped with my panic disorder, but never really seemed to change my depression. Actually, about a year into taking it, I became suicidal. After researching a little, I found Paxil is linked to increased suicidal tendencies so I immediately went off the drug cold turkey. Of course this was very dumb and I went through massive withdrawls but I didn't realize how dependent my body had become on it.

Which leads me to my question. It's been 3 months since I went off Paxil and I still have issues with depression. I'm not too keen on going on another prescription, but am curious about hermal remedies and/or vitamins I can take that might help. I have heard of St Johns Wort but does it actually work? Are there vitamins I should be taking? Certain foods I should be eating? Hearing from people with personal experience would be great.
