I am in physical rehab right now after having surgery from a chronic sports injury. I am a little antsy to say the least, I can't do sports, and I want to understand my addiction better. I googled and couldn't find any good resources, books, movies, forums, anything will help.
At this point I'm trying to AT LEAST make it to the end of my rehab (4 more months) without relapsing and going to play basketball and re-injuring myself.
To call it a sports addiction is interesting in a few ways. I'm not addicted to exercise. It's sports, like basketball, soccer, football etc.
And it may or may not be an "addiction" but I am strongly desiring to play sports with my friends, it's my favorite thing to do in the world, it's really fun.
I'm a former professional athlete, and I know some people will say take up new hobbies.. uh huh,..

I remember once reading a number of stories about old trick plays (in particular, some old American football plays) that were deemed to dirty and the rules were changed to outlaw them. But now my Google-fu is failing me, and I can't seem to turn up anything about them online. In particular, I remember a story about a team bringing in a very small player, handing them the ball, and having another player or to heave them over the tops of the heads of the opposing team and into the endzone. I also remember a story about a team sewing the image of a football onto the bellies of all of their jerseys to make it harder to tell who had the ball.
Anyone who can help me track down sources for these stories (and/or similar tales from sports) will have my unending gratitude.

Hi MeFi,
A friend is trying to find a bar/place in Boston that is playing the A's game (or is an Oakland A's bar)...I know, I know...most are just playing the Red Sox, but you are all the intelligentsia of what's around, so figured I'd ask you!
Thanks a lot!

I've recently finally gotten really fit and in shape, after spending most of my 27 years...not doing that. I've been looking for something local and athletic to do, both for fun and for fitness, but since I haven't played sports since I was 12 or so, my skills are lacking. However, all the local instruction is oriented towards youth, so I turn to you folk for aid. How can an sports newb adult learn how to play?

My sister would like to send my nephew to a football camp that will specifically aid him with developing his game with his new prosthetic. You can read more about my nephew here:
Former question about Koni. I've found some amputee camps, but they either focus on soccer, or various outdoor activities, not specifically football.
Koni's fundraisers were very successful, and he will have the funds for travel, etc. if needed, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Sincere thanks,
Jayed

Many years ago (perhaps a decade or more), I read an interesting article that argued there were essentially two types of coaches in professional sports: low-pressure (perhaps someone like Phil Jackson) and high-pressure (say, Bill Parcells). Both styles had their positives and negatives, but the author went on to say that if a low-pressure coach failed, you never wanted to replace him with someone even lower-pressure, and vice-versa, since that would only exacerbate what had already gone wrong. It might have been in the New Yorker, but I really can't say. Ringing any bells? Thanks!

I just called TWC to see if they'd offer some sort of retention deal - instead, right after saying "I'd like to cancel" the rep followed with "What day would you like us to pick up the equipment?" Crap. So right now we have someone scheduled to come out in a week, and we have to decide if we're going to call back and keep the cable service or really go through with this. (Or try this again?) We wouldn't even have cable were it not for our need of NHL coverage.

New Yorker or
Vanity Fair) that's accessible to folks who aren't exclusively diehard baseball fans.
