My husband's aunt gave me a beautifully embroidered cape that I will never ever wear, not in a million years. What should I do with it? [more inside]
We are planning a week in Spain, and the itinerary looks rushed. Our tastes are rather... not Rick Steves. Help us simplify the itinerary. [more inside]
What do people in France, Spain, and Mexico call a (station) wagon in common usage in their native languages? Is "break" correct for France? I think I'm missing the subtleties when Googling here. (And "estate" is correct for the UK, right?) Thank you!
We will be in Europe for about a month, and I think we will spend June 23rd to July 5th in Spain. That's 12 full days. We will be leaving Paris on the 23rd, and may be able to leave a day or two early. [more inside]
We're trying to plan a honeymoon and are broadly looking for something that may take us from Madrid to Casablanca. Any travel advice, pointers, or warnings? [more inside]
I'm looking to buy an item of clothing online, but I need an address in Spain or Italy to do so. I know there are companies that provide you with an address in the US or the UK or Japan and will then forward your package on to you, but I can't seem to find anything like this for Spain or Italy. Does anyone know where I might find such a service?
What should my wife and I do in order to use our phones in Spain? [more inside]
At short notice we'll be flying into Barajas tomorrow at 11am, picking up family at Av De America bus station at 12.30 and driving down to Malaga. I haven't lived in Madrid for 20 years but I do know that restaurants around Principe de Vergara are unlikely to have come down in price! Are there smaller locations as we exit Madrid that would be better options for a family of 6? what's traffic like at this time of the year? what's the latest serving time? thanks..
Going to Barcelona in March for just over a week, looking for ideas on day trips from the city. Especially interested in art, ancient ruins, hiking, and wine-tasting. [more inside]
I have old Spanish olive oil label, apparently from the 1930s. The printer's name, in small print at the bottom of the label, reads "A. Martinez" (although there is a slight chance that the "A." is actually an "R."). This name is followed by a dash and "Barcelona" and preceded by what looks like T* G*. The "asterisk" looks something like a superscripted yen (currency) symbol. All this is difficult to read because it is printed in black on a dark green background. The brand name of the olive oil is Vulcano.
Family legend has it that our ancestors were Separdic Jews who fled Spain for Italy during the inquisition. My great-grandparents definitely came to Ellis Island from Italy, but they are as far back as we can trace. I am interested in seeing if this is true. I need help figuring out who should get tested and what test they should take. Family tree details inside. [more inside]
At the very last minute, my mother has decided to take a trip from Aberdeen to Spain and Portugal. Ideally, she'd leave sometime this weekend or on Monday/Tuesday and spend a few days in each country - it doesn't matter much where in each country. UK-ers, any tips for agents or websites we can use to find reasonable flights? We were thinking of AirBnB for accommodations, but if you know of anything cheaper or easier, I'll take those recs too.
Hi all, we are starting our planning to do the Camino de Santiago sometime next year. Just wanted to know if there are any MeFi members who have done the route and their advice on what the best time to do the route would be, and their recommendations on which route to go on? [more inside]
We are leaving from Madrid airport at 1:25pm on a Wednesday to go back to the United States. We’ll be in Barcelona on Tuesday. How and when should we get back to Madrid? Please let me know what you think of our options, based on our travel itinerary inside. [more inside]
I will be traveling in Spain and Portugal next month. We will be staying in Paradors and other nice hotels. I would like to travel light, and not bring a suit jacket. Can I get away with slacks and collared shirts, or will I barred from some restaurants for dress code without a jacket? [more inside]
Currently there is a lightning storm on the France / Spain border which is oddly circular. It looks like this as seen on lightningmaps. Why is it this shape?
What's a good town or smallish city in Spain to visit in the summer with kids (ages 2 and 5) in tow? We're looking at 3 weeks in late July/August, and would prefer a walkable place that's on a train line (or are they all?) so we wouldn't have to rent a car to explore locally or beyond. [more inside]
I am a Dutch citizen (but non-resident) who has recently relocated to Spain. I have secured legitimate employment to begin in 7 weeks, and I'm trying to work out the process to get my documents together. [more inside]
For some journalism I am doing, wonder if anyone might be able to identify this building in Spain. I think it is in Barcelona, but am not sure.
I currently have my iPhone4 on tmobile's $30 for 100 min and unlimited data, prepaid plan. I need to spend a week in Barcelona soon. I was told by customer service that I will not be able to roam in Barcelona using this plan; any tips for how to make my cell phone experience in Barcelona as close as possible to what I have here? [more inside]
We are visiting Barcelona, Spain for a week, and are having trouble finding decent restaurants that aren't geared towards tourists in the Eixample area. I figure that y'all might know where we can eat. [more inside]

We're going to Seville! What are your favorite sights and restaurants? Particularly I'd like to know about restaurants by neighborhood, since when I travel I often have a list of restaurants I've compiled but have trouble coordinating them with where I wind up after sightseeing. thank you, (if you happen to have favorite restaurants/sights in Cordoba that would be useful too!)
Last night, Google notified me of suspicious activity wherein someone used my password to log in to Gmail. Google automatically foiled the attempt, and reported the malicious user's IP address to me. Is it useful/safe to report the abuse to the user's ISP? [more inside]

I am going to be in Madrid, Spain for a few days. Most of my time is scripted. However, I had the afternoon of New Year's Eve free. Do you have any suggestions on what to do? I am already going to the Prado, taking a walking tour, and a bus tour. I am looking for something that is a must see or do. I am a female in my early 40s. I may or may not be able to get someone else to go with me.
I need to get a Christmas present for my mom (I KNOW HOW LITTLE TIME THERE IS LEFT, THANK YOU!). I'd really like it to be related to our recent trip to Spain, ideally somehow either to the flamenco dancer Adrian Sanchez or to the Cortylandia display in Madrid. Any ideas welcome! [more inside]
My family and I will soon be embarking on a trip to Spain. We'll be in Seville the 19th-27th, Cordoba for a couple of days after that, and Granada until January 2nd. What's cool stuff to do in these places (we've already got Alhambra tickets), or very nearby? Is there anything associated with the current winter festivities to do? Any good restaurant recommendations?
In two of this year's notable high-speed train derailments--Compostella in Spain in July and the New York Metro North crash on Sunday--the train driver survived, but many of the passengers and crew, who were presumably in cars further back from the engine car, did not. Is there any data from any safety board (NTSB or similar in other countries) that suggests any particular train cars are more safe than others in the event of a derailment? [more inside]
My partner went hiking in Spain about a year and a half ago. She experienced some difficulties with her feet so it was a difficult hike with a fair amount of pain to complete the journey. She stayed in hostels along the way. She now has what looks like poison oak patches on her feet and arms that never seem to heal. [more inside]
I am going to the South of Spain and Morocco for my honeymoon, starting November 5th. I have only been to Europe once before, and never to this area. I was wondering - what should my fiance and I bring, clothing-wise? [more inside]

I'm head to Europe from the US for a week with my brother. We're visiting a friend who lives in Toulouse, France, who will be driving with us for a week through southwest France and southeast Spain. Looking for ideas of fun, exciting, and beautiful things to see, eat, and do -- while avoiding bigger cities and exploring the countryside/towns. [more inside]
My extended family is trying to put together a trip to someplace interesting, warm and beach-y, to occur around New Year's. For a variety of complicated reasons related to where people will be traveling from, the Middle East, North Africa and far southern Europe are the most feasible destinations. Where should we consider going? [more inside]
I will be spending ten days in southern Spain at the end of next month. I love food and am more excited about the eating than maybe any other part of the vacation - not just because of the food itself but because the whole eating culture and schedule is different from what I am used to as an American. [more inside]
I purchased a Spanish Vodafone sim card for use while on vacation and have successfully added credit (20 EUR) and then activated the Smart16 tariff which includes 1.5GB of data. How do I know how much of this is left? [more inside]
I'm studying abroad this fall in Barcelona with pretty workable Spanish but very limited Catalan, and I'd love to do some work/activism/volunteering/organizing around queer or related issues (HIV/AIDS, youth development, homelessness, etc.) while I'm there. Is this possible given my language limitations? [more inside]
My girlfriend and I plan to go to Spain, leaving Christmas day and coming back a few days after New Years. We are interested in both activities and places it's just nice to be for a while. Spain is the primary destination here, but we're open to side trips into Andorra and/or Morocco. And, hey, how about the Baleric Islands? [more inside]

I'm probably going to meet up with some friends to Ibiza in June, but I'm not much of a beach person, so if I get antsy, what else could I do with a few free days in southern Spain? I was thinking of spending a few days in Barcelona, but what are some other options that are relatively accessible from Ibiza? Also, advice for finding less expensive flights from the east coast of the US to Ibiza would be amazing.
Tell me about the weirdest, most magical, fantastical places in Spain. Places that have ghostly apparitions, spirit-sightings, woo-woo lines of crystal power or tombs of mad saints. Spooky forests, castles, places hippies flock to. Places where the guide books start the descriptions with "legend has it..." Fairy tale towns. Roman ruins. You get the idea. Places in Portugal welcomed as well. (Going for two weeks at the end of May. Delicious food & scenery is great, but I'm really looking to spark my imagination.)
I'm trying to find recordings, be they on CD or downloadable, of popular music from Spain of the 1920 and '30s. I'm hampered by the fact that I don't really know much about Spanish popular music--were there the equivalent of the dance bands recording in the U.S. and U.K., for example? [more inside]
