Hi MeFi, My lights were left running on my Honda Civic 2008 and the battery drained. After a jump from AAA, the car audio hasn't been the same. To clarify.. it sounds much much louder. For example, I used to be able to turn it up to Level 30, right now if I go over Level 5 it sounds extremely loud and bass is very distorted. What could it be? Did battery jump somehow fry my speakers/receiver? Thanks for your help!
I'm craving music that has as little sound as possible. I feel like the music that I've encountered all my life rarely has long chunks of silence. I want music that respects silence, tiptoes around it, and very, very rarely intrudes upon it. I want those intrusions to be perfect as well. Does anything come to mind? [more inside]
I'm a researcher with no film experience, and am beginning to think about an oral history project, which best case would become a short film. The theme is regional accents, so audio quality is important. [more inside]

Somewhat-obscure-filter, but I'm looking to generate a list of compelling audio/radio documentaries that use no or little music, but lots of other kinds of sound, to tell a story. [more inside]
Is there an Android app out there that would allow you to touch the screen (either a big icon or the entire screen) that would play back a selected sound file when tapped? The quicker the response time the better. And if it has options for multiple zones (like making a custom-made Simon), even better.
I am getting a high pitch sound coming out of stereo in a pulse that would make a dog loopy. I do not have a sophisticated setup. The stereo is plugged into the wall. Apple TV is plugged into wall and TV. Router plugged into power strip along with DVD player. I switched out all RCA plugs and speaker wire. [more inside]
In Logic Pro, is there a way to add two Shure SM81 microphones (connected via Shure USB-to-XLR adapters) as separate tracks for recording? Currently, the only way I've been able to bring them into Logic Pro is as a merged or aggregate input device, which means the signals from the two mics are merged before going into one track. I do not want this, but instead wish to feed the signal from the two mics into two separate tracks. Is there a way to do this in Logic Pro with the equipment I have? [more inside]
When I play records sound only comes out of the right speaker. [more inside]
Help me understand the difference between 28dB, 38dB and 48dB. I'm thinking about buying a fridge, and the fridges I'm considering have noise levels ranging from 28dB to 47dB (according to the latest fridge assessment in Choice). Fridges with a 28dB noise level rating are too expensive for me, though, so I'm trying to find something I can afford but which won't annoy me too much (I'm sensitive to the noise of a buzzing fridge). What I can afford tends to be somewhere in the mid-30s dB range. But it's no use going into a noisy showroom and trying to properly gauge how a fridge will sound in my quiet home. So I'm wondering if there's a way I can test these different noise levels at home before I buy, to see what's the difference.
I used to have an iPhone. You could listen to music with it. You could plug it into my basic USB car stereo and it would play music. I now have a Google Nexus 4. It will play for about 30 minutes, and then stop. If I'm lucky, it might deign to play a few songs in the car. I must be doing something wrong, right? [more inside]

I am considering writing a novel/story that involves the idea of people living among us who are somewhere between three and eight inches tall, but I don't know enough about the physics of sound to know if normal height humans would be able to speak to these tiny people. Would their voices be too high-pitched to hear at all, or just very difficult to understand? Would our voices be understandable to them? [more inside]

What's the cheapest/simplest way for me to run sound from my iPod/laptop (3.5mm jack) to a stereo (RCA) about 20 feet away? If it were a shorter distance I'd just get a standard audio cable, but I'm worried that something like this will lose a lot of signal/fidelity. [more inside]
I have been playing around with Audacity recently trying to understand a bit more about sound in general. One question I'm having trouble wrapping my head around is: How does Tone and Frequency relate? For instance, the 2600 Hz is a high-pitched tone. Does that mean that anything that produced that same tone would be at 2600 Hz? And does it mean that for the entire range of human hearing -- all of those Hz -- that one tone corresponds to a particular frequency? I am looking for some basic explanation or even tools to play with...
Computer/Electronic/AudiophileFilter: I just finished my first build of a computer. When I plug in my computer's onboard sound into my receiver through the standard 3.5mm audio jack and output to two KRK monitors and a sub, I get screeching/scrambling from the speakers that drives me nuts. It basically sounds like I can hear my processor. This doesn't happen with headphones. Lots more inside. [more inside]

Despite taking several physics classes many years ago I don't think I understand how sound works. I was watching the excellent Behind the Sounds video about creating "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and thinking about how all those instruments at different registers ultimately are just recorded as one wave (in mono) or at most two (in stereo) that hit the ear. How can one wave carry such a density of information (like the Beach Boys) yet only carry information based on frequency, wave length and intensity? How can I tell that there are all these instruments when I only hear one wave?

I need to record two people at the same time. I can't follow them around with a boom mic and I don't want them to be attached at the hip with a splitter to one recorder plus 2 lapel mics. How do I record two people, walking around, talking to each other? Do I need two recorders? AND if I have two recorders, how much of a pain will it be to edit the material/will it sound weird? How is this normally done? It is for the radio. [more inside]
