Asking for my kid: My teenager got a science assignment to determine the speed of sound. She is planning to measure the time difference between a visual event and the accompanying sound, observed from a set distance. Can you help her find practical ways to do the experiment? [more inside]
I'm getting radio interference on my desktop monitors, and am assaulted by some sports talk show constantly whenever I'm not playing anything that would drown it out. As a result, I am reluctant to turn them on, and do so only infrequently, and am missing out on the full experience of shrooming dog videos on Facebook. They're Yamaha HS50s, connected to a Behringer mixer with 1/4" cables, and the power in my apartment is not grounded. Every time I try Googling this issue myself, I have a confused. Please tell me what to do to to fix this before I learn something about sports and/or throw the speakers through the window!
What I want is simple: I pluck the guitar string (or make some other sound), and the app tells me the frequency in Hz. [more inside]
I've been playing with recording songs or reading my poems as voice memos on my iPhone 5 (iOS 10) lately. I want to clean the audio up before I share it in any capacity. I have a PC running Windows 8.1. I'm hoping to learn the basics of things to specifically do in Audacity or another free program. I cannot afford software or recording equipment, and I have no previous knowledge of sound editing. For a sample here is a PJ Harvey cover I recorded today.
I'll be spending a week in Germany at the beginning of October. I have a ton of free time and the willingness to go anywhere that's rail-accessible. So, I beseech you: What are some of the coolest-SOUNDING places or things in Germany? [more inside]
I have a 10-year old Samsung HDTV (LNT4661F). I run audio out via RCA cables into my 30 year old stereo amp, keeping the TV's volume at zero. Problem is when I hit "mute" on my cable (Verizon Fios) remote control, it doesn't mute (oddly, when I hit the virtual "mute" button on the virtual remote in my FIOS iphone app, the sound DOES mute!) there a way to make the cable remote (one of these mute the volume?
Why did Audacity distort a recording? [more inside]
I'm not sure where I originally heard about this (podcast? radio?) but I'm in search of an (Android) app that is a compilation of real-world ambient sounds of "nothing". The examples played in the interview I remember were simply recordings of the ambient sounds of various locales around the world. (The sounds of droning highway, city traffic/sirens, etc... from different areas around the world). [more inside]
My husband is incredibly sensitive to noise, in particular any sound that disrupts his sleep. I am nervous about how he will react to our future child's cries and concerned that he has unrealistic expectations around quieting a baby. He disagrees. How can I calm down about this in advance and/or help in the future? [more inside]

Curious to know if there exists a film in which two songs (ideally not score material) are essentially mixed as though they were selected by a DJ. One or both of the music sources can be visible on screen (band, radio, etc.), but stuff like a live band segue or DJ set doesn't really qualify as what I'm looking for. Or maybe this is super common, and I just never realized it?
While hiking to the Sespe Hot Springs in the Los Padres National Forest over the weekend, I kept hearing this vocalization. (The low moaning one that repeats six times.) What creature is it?
I've been using snippets and samples of sci-fi/horror/weird movies for station IDs on the weird late night radio show I do. I'm bored with the current crop... help me find some new stuff to sample! [more inside]
In my old apartment, there was nobody below me, so I didn't worry about he noise that my electronic drumset made. Now I have downstairs neighbors, so I want to find something to put underneath to deaden the sound and keep it from slipping on the hardwood. [more inside]
I'm a musician, working on someone's project where the sound needs to be very accurate to the recording techniques and sound of a specific time period in the early 80s. There are many steps in the recording process, but the sound of old tape is one of the more difficult ones to get right. Even if no one here has an answer, I would love to be in touch with someone who knows what happens chemically to analog tape as it ages (under normal storage conditions), and whether it's possible to mimic that process chemically with a new reel of tape. Thanks!
Hi MeFi, I recently upgraded my PC and snagged an i7 4790k / 4.00Ghz with 30GB of RAM. Much to my disappointment, I noticed that my new sound-card from Bang & Olufsen is super quiet and nowhere as loud as my previous Beats card that came bundled with my older HP machine. I record via Ableton Live/Reason and really miss the rich sound I used to get with Beats and no longer get with Bang & Olufsen. What are my options besides replacing the Sound-Card all together? Are there any headphone amplifiers for PC's that will give me more volume? Is there a stand-alone hardware I can buy and run via USB that will allow for richer sound? Thanks for your tips!
After its upgrade to Windows 10, my desktop no longer has sound. I had 8.1 until this afternoon, and had sound from the computer, NOT through additional speakers. Is it possible to restore this sound functionality under the new system? [more inside]
Laser rifles in the game Helldivers have a distinctive 'wop-wop-wop-wop' sound that's very familiar, but I can't place it. I thought it might be from Dune or Terminator, but no luck. Anybody recognise it?
Another geeky field recording question! I live in L.A. and would like to spend Memorial Day weekend in a "primitive camping" situation, surrounded by noisy nocturnal wildlife, to make long-form field recordings (6-10 hours). Birds and beasts are a particular interest. I'd like as little human company and contact as possible. Where would you go within, say, a six-hour drive?
Looking for a <$100 speaker that will play music loudly in a big greenhouse with lots of noisy fans (more than twenty regular fans for air movement and three giant fans that run the heating system). I'd like to either plug in or bluetooth a music source and I'm okay with plugging in the speaker. Do I want a portable bluetooth speaker or can I get something cheaper and better in terms of sound volume if I go the non-portable route? [more inside]
My parents recorded this sound at about 2:00 AM on a February night in northern Minnesota. I've boosted the gain in Audacity but haven't fiddled with the recording aside from that. It's in a heavily wooded area not far from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. What is the likely source? [more inside]
I've often heard people rate different mp3 players with statements like "the iPods have really poor bass" or "the sound from a Sandisk is really tinny" or "metal sounds awesome on my Zune" (a hypothetical - this has never happened). Obviously speakers and earphones and the ripping / recording of the original track can have a difference. Is there audio difference between players beyond that? [more inside]
One of the most horrifying sounds I've ever heard woke me up last night as I was sound asleep in my tent. I'm assuming a sasquatch but maybe y'all can help me come up with an alternative explanation. [more inside]
After some prolonged time with dear old dad in the car recently, I noticed he constantly makes weird little sounds and vocalizations when things are quiet. I don't think he has any idea he's doing this. What gives? [more inside]
Please recommend music containing recordings of rain or moving water. Not vanilla nature noises, like Echoes of Nature (though I love those too), but music in which those kinds of recordings are incorporated as an intergral part of the piece. [more inside]
My 2011 15" MacBook Pro makes occasional "click-clock" sounds when I'm doing things. It sounds like the sound-effect of a radio button being changed or some other innocuous event, but it happens when I'm doing something else in another window (or even on another screen). It's not a sound I ever hear when I'm actually doing something that causes the sound. How can I figure out what it is? [more inside]

Is there a term (scientific or musical) for that thing where you turn up the volume on your headphones (or whatever) and suddenly you can hear something that you couldn't hear at all at the lower volume? Like, "Oh, there's bells in there. I had no idea."
During Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, during the smorgasbord of visuals and the aggressively modernist music, there is one moment of auditory consonance which I'd like to hear more of: as the red and blue landscape gives way to the false color images of open water, there's a fantastic sound: what is this sound, how is it made, and where can I hear more of it? 7:43 in: stargate sequence
What is the optimal speaker set up for a computer playing iTunes and Spotify primarily (quality ~320 kbps)? I primarily listen to music on Spotify, and am looking for a new office speaker setup to connect to my iMac, but I'm not sure what the optimal plan is. Bookshelf speakers? Sonos? Computer speakers? DAC? Receiver? I'd prefer speakers to headphones, and am looking for the best sound out of those files.
I'm working on a chapter for my new book and I want to describe, quickly and concisely, the sound that old dial-up modems used to make while attempting to connect to the network. [more inside]

Suggest a microphone to plug into my iPhone 5S to improve the audio of my iPhone videos? Lavalier preferred, but a little shotgun thingie would be ok too. Hoping to achieve improved voice quality with less roomtone, and I need the audio file to record right onto the video file- I don't want to sync it in post. Thanks!

Yesterday, I started noticing that Windows is freezing for maybe a half-second every minute or so. Ordinarily it's not noticeable, but during videos or games it causes sound to catch for the duration ("...and so the solution to the pRRRRRRRoblem is..."), and sometimes video playback to glitch. Anyone have an idea what's going on? [more inside]
"This is the R-5 train to Páólí. Néxt stóp, Ò::vèr::bróók! Tickets, please!" The Regional Rail train conductors in the Philly region will forever be associated with formal, stentorian, prosodically elaborated station announcements. Where can I find a recording of these? [more inside]
in the incubus song "wish you were here" the guitar over the top has a delightful tone. it is mellow and full but kind of sharp as well at times. is that fullness from putting a hollow body through distortion or is there something else to it?
