What would you use to "build your own" wire service for a company?

I'm developing a proposal to overhaul the way my company thinks about communication. One of the major components that would allow this to work is the creation of what is essentially a "wire service". What software already exists to do this? (lots of details inside) [more inside]

(Visibly) Secure, online directory solution?

Please recommend easy online solutions to transition our "Student Directory" from a printed booklet to an online applications that parents can log-in to. Bonus points for parents being able to update their information (but with moderation/approval), or add notes (such as "lives with Dad on weekends") This seems like something that would exist as an out-of-box application. Legality of building a software application to access and write to a database which is created and distributed by a third party?

Let me explain. Let's says company A sells to company B a system that includes an Microsoft Access database in order to run. Is it legal for company C to make a system that connects and writes to to company A's database without asking for company A's permission? I assume that since it's just a regular Access database, that anyone can read, it shouldn't be a problem right?

These German historians would to like follow orders!

I'm writing a paper that involves reading forty articles by about thirty different historians. Their biographical details are relevant. I'd like to be able to enter information about these articles and their authors into a database (or something similar) and then be able to sort by the various categories, link entries together, easily have lists of all of the people or articles who fit a given criterium, et cetera. What should I use? Free or cheap, OSX-compatible, relatively low learning curve.

Genealogy widget?

Are there any good, preferably free, widgets that I can use to build a family tree and put it on my blog? Ideally I would like a widget that has some sort of database behind it, and I would link to a database record for a specific ancestor when I write about them . It would also be cool to show an attractive family tree as a navigational tool to go to old blog posts about specific ancestors. You could click links in the genealogy widget to posts about all of the stories that are tagged "great grandpa Joe," for example.

Newbie to MS Access deleted something essential. HELP!

[MSAccess Filter] HELP! I have been thrust into Access with no understanding of how it works beyond a 10-minute "use this" and "do that" session. Now I think I inadvertently deleted a couple of essential "forms." Can I get them back? Or rebuild them? I know the data must still be in there, but I don't know how to display it. [more inside]

Google Chrome stores complete text of pages. How do I access this cache?

Do you use the Google Chrome browser? Try this: Open the history page, and search for a term. The resulting list will include not just the pages that have the term in their page's title or URL; it will also include pages that have the term in the actual text. This indicates that somewhere, Chrome is actually storing the text of all web pages you visit. (This is backed up by the fact that the search-results page shows you snippets from the results.) So here's the thing: I want to see the whole page of cached text, not just snippets. [more inside]

Databases needed for looking up song years of release

I have been given the task of looking up the year-of-release for a large number (~8000) songs. Many of these titles are European, Latin American, and South American. Allmusic.com is okay, but slow and not as comprehensive as I require--esp. for uncommon titles. I'd bet that I have to find some specialized databases. Anyone have a suggestion?
