How do I do retirement?

I am planning to retire at the end of this school year, June 2017. I will be age 65 at retirement and have worked at my current job for 31 years. My spouse is 70 and receives a small Social Security pension. Neither of us can nor will claim any disability. I currently live in California but will have to move to Oregon to be closer to family. I have researched so many things but I still can't find the answers I seek to get the most bang out of my remaining bucks. Can you tell me where to find the answers to these questions? [more inside]

Social security...consultant? Lawyer? What am I looking for?

I have a very detailed and confusing situation regarding my (now departed) mother and her social security benefits, and how they may or may not carry over to her husband - - who is not American. Before she died, she tried to research it herself, both online and in person when she would visit. She'd get conflicting information each time, but unfortunately, none of it in writing. I would like to hire an expert to settle the situation for once and for all...but what am I looking for? [more inside]

Inheriting when one sibling is disabled

I am one of 3 kids, and the best off financially. Bob is disabled and on social security and both Bob and Janet have student loans. Our parents are divorced and both retired and Dad just told us all that we will get his house when he dies and that is the case with Mom as well. Everything split 3 ways seems unfair to me since they need it and I don't. [more inside]

I changed my full name (and gender). What account do I need to change?

Because of transgender reasons, I recently legally changed my name in court (and at Social Security and the DMV). I have taken care of my bank and my work accounts. Credit card companies and my ISP require me to mail the paperwork. I feel like I'm missing a lot - can you give me some examples of other stuff I will need to change? What is the most important stuff that I should do first? [more inside]

Mom is moving up--what next?

My mother is moving from NYC, where she's lived for 30 years, to my town in the Boston 'burbs. It's a good location in an over 55 community that will give her independent mobility to Boston via public transit, and she'll see us, and our kidlet, regularly. But what else to do to make a good transition? [more inside]

Help me understand housing subsidies in Pennsylvania.

My family and I are moving to Pennsylvania for work. My 67 year old mother, who currently lives with us, will be moving as well. My mother was on disability (for Muscular Dystrophy), and is now on a meager (~$1100/mo) Social Security Check. I'm certain that she's eligible for some kind of subsidies, but I can't figure out what subsidies, where they can be used, and who to ask. Help! [more inside]

Help me get what Social Security owes me.

How do I approach Social Security Administration to be awarded the money they failed to pay me? Should I request the retroactive payment? Here is what happened. I was eligible to receive social security benefits on January 1 of this year. In fact I was eligible before that date but selected it as my starting date. [more inside]

When should I tell Social Security about my name change?

I'll be changing my name very soon. Problem: My employer will also file my W-2 soon. I don't want mismatched documents to make SSA or IRS send a no-match letter. It'd inconvenience us both, and since this is due to a gender transition, it would also accidentally out me. Is there some time early next year when all the W-2 forms will be processed, and I can tell the SSA of my name change, then my employer, without triggering a no-match? Or is my best option to tell everyone ASAP and hope for the best?

Will Social Security/Medicare Eligibility Remain 40 Quarters?

Full eligibility for social security and Medicare requires a minimum 40 quarters of contributions. How worried should I be that this goalpost might be moved in the next decade or two (i.e. that more than 40 quarters might eventually be required)? I realize these programs are periodically threatened with reform, but is this particular threshold one of the facets challenged by reformers?

Help me understand Disability benefits (social security)?

I am a late 50's year old woman living in Ohio, with chronic diabetes, stroke, and other ailments. I have been employed for the past 20 years, but it is getting exceedingly difficult to do any work. I want to know if I quality for disability benefits (like a monthly check?) even if I own my own home, and I own some other real estate properties. Who can qualify? What are other things that might disqualify me? Will receiving Disability benefits exclude me from receiving Social Security benefits when I reach the age of 65? Tanks.

Tax obligation for housekeeper?

I have an occasional housekeeper who used to work for me very intermittently, and now it's becoming more of a regular thing. I estimate that in 2014 I will end up paying her approx. $2500. Social Security Disability Applications

I'm seeking real-life experiences in applying for Social Security Disability. Yesterday I completed my on-line application for Social Security Disability. I haven't been able to work since February and have been receiving first short-term and now long-term disability payments from my prior employer (I no longer have a job to go back to even if I were able to work). My long-term disability is approved in 3 month chunks, but since there has been no improvement in my condition, I don't have any reason to believe it wouldn't continue to be approved although it's stressful to me when those reapprovals come due. How Can I Get A Copy Of My SSA Consultive Exam Report?

I have a SSA Consultative Exam (mental) for disability determination next week. Since I don't have a doctor of my own, or health insurance, or an income the NJ DOL is providing one for me to see. There is a form for me to fill out that authorizes the release my SSA Consultative Exam Report. I don't have a doctor of my own, nor a way to get a doctor myself. How can I get a copy for myself then?
