I quit smoking about a month ago after 10 years of consistently smoking half a pack a day (YAY!). I have been diligent in NOT changing my diet or exercise during this process as I need to focus on one goal at a time. One of my biggest struggles with quitting is fear of weight gain, and it is happening. I would like to stave off some of that effect. I need advice from other people who have gone through quitting either smoking or other serious addiction and how they mentally coped with weight gain or physical changes and in general what can work to get back to your previous weight or accept the extra pounds. More details below the cut. [more inside]
I live in an apartment building where smoking is allowed in individual apartment units, just not in the hallways or common areas. I smoke a few cigarettes and have a glass of wine when I get home at night, and about 1/3 of the tenants in the building are also smokers who smoke in their apartments. It's just one of these low-cost, kind of dirty apartment buildings occupied mostly by college-age kids. Two days ago, a family with a newborn baby moved in above me. They left me note this morning telling me that they will not tolerate me smoking in my own apartment because they are concerned for their baby's health... [more inside]
Aaaaand we've had an argument almost everyday since. I've gotten better at holding my tongue and realizing things are incredibly tough for him right now. What else would you suggest? [more inside]
My girlfriend has given up smoking. Its been less than 12 hours and she's ready to rip my throat out. [more inside]
Camel Filters and Camel Lights (now Blues) both have a foil-coated paper covering the cigarettes underneath the lid. In Filters, both the front and back halves of the foil pull out easily. But in Lights, only the front half pulls out easily. The back half is attached to the pack somehow. Why?
I think it would be AWESOME to have some chewy, honey or other naturally sweetened candy, which are not all that sweet, just to help us with oral fixations. I personally don't smoke but am needing to begin a very long progress of eating in moderation, and I tend to eat sweets when I'm bored. [more inside]
I had some work done on my car today. It's a 1994 Nissan Altima. I had a belt and pulley replaced, the engine gasket replaced, and the plugs and wires replaced. The oil was changed as well. Oil had leaked through the gasket and gotten on the engine, which they cleaned off. I drove 10 miles with no problems. [more inside]
One of my dear friends is getting married and I'd love to give him a some nice cigars. I'd love some recommendations as to how best to allocate around $200 bucks on such a gift, whether a box or a few more expensive ones. [more inside]

On a lanai in southwest florida, there is some heavy daily smoking going on. Even with three walls made of screens that open to outside, the smell remains. Looking to find ways to mitigate the stale and persistent smoke smell. The amount of smoking is not going to decrease, looking for a product that will help with the smell from the actual smoking and the ashtrays full of butts (which are emptied fairly often.) My friend wants to buy some smooth mild cigarillos. He is looking for the best introductory cigarillos, preferably a huge step up from gas station swishers but there are so many options that its gotten overwhelming. Help!
I moved and can no longer use the strategies that have helped me get through writing, for ages. I have a lot to do just now but am not in the headspace to change. This is about the regular tabacky. What's as good as nicotine for writing, and similar in use factors? [more inside]
After several decades of sucking up carcinogenic fumes, Mr. Thumbscrews quit smoking... yay! I'd like to present him with the smokers' equivalent of AA sobriety "chips" on his various "___ months without a cig" dates. My Google-fu is failing to produce anything. Any ideas, Hive? The ideal medallion would be cheap-ish, possibly funny, and definitely non-hokey (no soaring eagles or serenity prayers). Thanks!
I'm in Seattle for a few days, and I purchased a small amount of pot. Where can I legally smoke it? Preferably near Belltown.
I've heard that consuming products that have been smoked can increase cancer risk. I've recently started to regularly drink several cups a day of Lapsang Souchong, a smoked tea. I am an ex-smoker so I am concerned that my risk for certain cancers is already elevated. I am having difficulty finding information on if there are any potential cancer risks from drinking this tea and if so, if they are significant enough that I should consider cutting back the amount I am drinking.
Over the past 6-8 months, I've fallen into a lot of bad habits that affect how I feel in my body. I want to improve, but there is so much that needs improving that I'm not sure where or how to start, and I don't have a lot of motivation. How do I begin to turn things around? [more inside]
I quit smoking years ago, but still run out of breath while cycling, long before my legs are fatigued. [more inside]
My brother is in his late twenties and we frequently visit our parents on the same weekend (every month or two). He always smokes weed by himself in the guest bedroom at night after our parents have gone to sleep. He's currently living with our parents temporarily, and I'm visiting now and he smoked weed last night. (I've never seen him do this, but I can always smell it.) I'm trying to decide if this could signal a problem with weed. [more inside]
I'm thinking of going down the e-cigarette route, but I've got a few questions I'm not sure about, in brief: 1) Is there any research out there on their effects on your health? I get that it's early days, and they've got to better than smoking, but are there side effects/dangers that I should be aware of? 2) Is there much difference between a cheap one I can buy at the supermarket, compared to an expensive one I buy on the internet? 3) What have your experiences been like with them? Is it difficult to make the jump from normal cigarettes? [more inside]
My sister wants/needs to stop smoking, so she's requested an e-cigarette for Christmas. But she's overwhelmed with choices and doesn't know which one she wants, other than that her doctor recommended she get one with no nicotine. And I know next to nothing about real cigarettes, let alone electronic ones, so I don't know where to begin looking. Can you suggest a good one? What even makes a "good" e-cigarette?
I quit smoking about a month ago. My boyfriend wants to quit smoking, but hasn't. He's cut down quite a bit (he hasn't been smoking in the evenings), but he still smokes during the day. I know it's not easy, I thought about quitting for a long time before it actually happened, but I just feel so upset now whenever I see him light up, or if I smell smoke on him. I feel like a hypocrite! How can I get a grip on how I react and how I feel? [more inside]
I smoked for most of my adult life. I managed to quit once before (for about 18 months) and now am on my fourth month of quitting again -- so far, so good except I seem to be getting more colds and sinus issues. I don't recall this happening last time I quit. [more inside]
I received a message from my property manager complaining about cigarette and pot smoking in my building/near my apartment. I live in a mid-rise building in Chicago, and 2-3x a week will partake in the latter activity (do not smoke cigarettes at all). [more inside]

My mom gave my daughter a great deal on a car previously driven by my step-dad. However he was a smoker, and he smoked in the car for 10 years. How do I deoderize the interior and remove the stale smoke oder?
My children's adored grandmother is a smoker. She doesn't smoke in front of the kids but does take several smoke breaks a day, and while our two year old is oblivious, our four year old is probably close to figuring out what's up. Growing up, I had no relatives who smoked, and my parents pushed the "boy, smokers sure think they look cool, don't they look stupid though?" angle which worked fine on me. Obviously that isn't going to work in this case. How do you talk with young children about smoking as a Bad Thing when relatives smoke?
Someone asked me this this morning, and I have no idea so I thought I would throw it out to the green. [more inside]
Today, Costco had a decent price on boneless pork loins so I bought one. From what I can tell, this is the "whole" loin, including blade, center, and sirloin (the tube of meat is somewhere around 2 feet long). Help me plan what to cook with part of it on Sunday, and how to process/package the rest. [more inside]
Back in college, I smoked weed intermittently (maybe every month if that - so not that big a smoker), but had a consistent dealer on campus. [more inside]
Last week, on impulse, I bought a pork belly from the farmers market. After consulting Ruhlman's Charcuterie, I realized I had no curing salt (aka Prague Powder, aka sodium nitrite) at home, and no one around me sold it. Rather than toss the belly in the freezer until I could buy some by mail (again, Impulsive Pork Belly Buyer), I found a bunch of non-curing salt cure recipes, and settled on 2.5 parts kosher salt to 1 part sugar with a heap of pepper. The belly's been sitting in the fridge for the past week. It smells fine. It feels firm. I am prepared to hot smoke it tomorrow, and now I'm panicking because of a bunch of smoker/BBQ posts I've read that say I'm dooming myself and my family to botulism. Am I? [more inside]
I just bought an electric water smoker on Craigslist. I am excited about the possibilities for DIY bacon and home-smoked salmon and brisket, but I have never used a smoker like this before and don't really know how to get started. [more inside]
Hello Hive Mind! A few years ago I quit smoking cigarettes And I have absolutely no desire to smoke them again. But on the other hand, I miss the social aspects of smoking and enjoying it. Enter Ecigs. Mrs. NiumX and I are thinking it might be fun to get an ecig system that offers fun and interesting options with no (or low) nicotine. Flavors, whatever. Older Asks seem a few years old. What is new? So any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

Youngest Nephew (age 8) has declared that for his birthday party next week, he only wants his favorite adults to attend. We will be listening to his favorite vinyl records (he is mainly into Sinatra's Capitol years these days) and dining on omelets that he will cook for us, featuring the fancy salt and umami paste I bought his mom for Christmas. Apparently, he enjoys cooking while chomping on a bubble pipe and wearing a bathrobe that he calls his smoking jacket. This is, of course, outrageous: he must have a real smoking jacket, and his doting aunt must be the one who presents it to him. Help me help him to be Too Marvelous for Words. [more inside]
