Where are the transflective displays?

Digital display technology is constantly marching forward, especially with smartphone manufacturers trying to one-up each other on screen thinness, DPI, and brightness. But why do no smartphones (or tablets, or laptops) use transflective displays? Simply put, a transflective display is can be seen with either backlighting or frontlighting. It is a screen that can be used both in a dark room and in direct sunlight — and the sunlight will actually make it clearer. [more inside]

Issues with spoken-word listening apps on iPhone 5s, other smartphones?

It's that magical time of the biennium where my loved ones upgrade my phone for me. I listen to a lot of audiobooks and podcasts on my current phone, an iPhone 4s, using the Audible and Downcast apps, respectively. Unfortunately, when I pause and do something else on the phone, it often "forgets" what I had been listening to, forcing me to reopen the app. I'd like my next phone to not experience this issue, but relevant info isn't something I can get out of the standard review article, so I've turned to you kind people. Verizon Nixes Nexus, What Now?

Made the mistake of buying an iPhone 5c on which no one can hear me. I've brought it back to the apple store twice, they wanted to give me a third phone and I said no. I'm stuck with the contract but want out of the phone. It looked like the Nexus 7 was going to be a perfect replacement until I found out it don't work with Verizon. Need a contractless, reasonably priced alternative to the 5c. I don't need or want the options of the 5s. Would like to buy new phone over the net not through Verizon or Apple. Any suggestions?

Smart Phone Choices

I use Verizon Wireless and my two years are up on one of my phones and I am looking to keep the cost under $100. I can get a refurbished Samsung Fascinate for $19.99 and it looks like a good phone. I can also get Samsung Stratosphere or a Droid X2 for $99.99. With my two year plan those look like my three best buys. Are the refurbished phones ever worth a darn? I bought a refurbished laptop over three years ago and it's running great still. All three are rated high and look OK but another few opinions won't hurt.

How to reinvigorate a not-very-old Droid 2?!

My Droid 2, which I bought in August 2010, is beginning to have performance issues. I assume this is partially a planned obsolescence thing, but given that I have to live with the phone for another year-plus, what can I do to improve its quickness, buggy-ness, etc.? [more inside]
