We're shopping for a new mattress and thinking about an Ikea mattress. Does anyone know how Ikea mattresses are compared to a brand name one like Sealy? Is there a difference in quality and/or price? We have to drive about 100 miles to get to an Ikea store vs 15 minutes for a Sleep America. Is it worth the trip?

In heterosexual relationships, is there a side of the bed that men normally sleep on? Is there any kind of tradition behind it? Like, if you're standing at the foot of the bed looking at the pillows, are men supposed to sleep on the left or right side? My dad always slept on the left side. And myself, with my last girlfriend, I also slept on the left side. Am I unconsciously re-enacting some kind of old tradition as to what side I'm supposed to sleep on? [more inside]

I'm on what might be called a revolving sleep schedule, where I go to sleep and wake up about one hour later every day. This means every other week or so I sleep during the daytime. This seems to be my body's natural sleep rhythm. Right now I'm going to sleep at 7-8 AM and waking up at 3-4 PM. But on Sunday morning I need to GET UP at 7 AM, and be fully awake and refreshed for the entire day. In short, I need to completely reverse my sleep schedule in under three days. I've never been able to this, so I need fresh advice on how I might accomplish it. [more inside]

Does subliminal learning work? I'm at an intermediate level of french but since I'm leaving for France in a month I want to speed up the process a bit. I already do a lot of work (listening to RFI while I work, speaking whenever possible etc) but I figure if listening to podcasts while I sleep would help too then why not? [more inside]

For the past few months, I've been experiencing a lot of back pain during sleep and when I wake up. I've tried many solutions - sleeping on top of a bunch of blankets (to make my firm mattress softer), sleeping with a pillow between my legs (helps a little but not much, it seems), putting a towel under my hips, sleeping on my back, sleeping on my stomach, sleeping on my side. In a nutshell, I'm losing it and really could use some help. Anyone with a super-sensitive back who has found a comfortable way to sleep??? I have scoliosis, so that's one thing to keep in mind. Also, if one of the strategies I mentioned above worked for you, pleae don't hesitate to mention it - maybe you tried it in a different way than I did! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

I sleep on my side and every pillow I've had flattens after several weeks of use, or just collapses when I put my head in it. This causes my shoulder or back to hurt when I wake up. Is there any type of pillow that will stay firm for a while so I can sleep on my side comfortably? I've tried double pillows, folding a pillow in half, etc. but it never works out.

I have been tossing around the concept of polyphasic sleeping for years now and the only thing that is stopping me from converting is this question.
How would this affect my body?
There seems to be no real mention on articles covering polyphasics of how this affects your body. Plenty say that you get enough sleep for your mind, although as I would like to form my own opinion on the mind part, my issue is that they are quick to say that the other "Five something" hours of non REM sleep are essentially wasted.
My hypothesis is that you need these hours of downtime for your body itself to regenerate. If my hypothesis is correct is there any ways to ensure a rest like state for my body while in a waking cycle during full on uberman style polyphasics?
