I need to find shiny sparkly clothes.

So my friend has some sort of overdeveloped magpie region of her brain and loves sparkly shiny clothing (think sequins, covered in glitter). Where can I find something extra special for christmas for her? Skirts, tops, dresses - hell, even pyjamas or accessories. I would love your ideas of where to purchase such sparkly items. UK-based is very preferable. Budget of £50 but preferably a bit cheaper. Thank you all in advance!

Where to find a black skirt with a zipper slit?

Where can I find a professional-looking longish black skirt with a front or side zipper slit? (for $150 or less, ideally) I have a skirt exactly like this - mid-calf length, with a zipper slit that goes from fully closed to mid-thigh height - and I like it so much it's starting to get ratty. It's so perfect and versatile, going from all-business to a bit sexy in several seconds flat - but now it should really be retired.

I've been Googling like crazy to see if I can find something to replace it, but I'm having trouble fishing the skirts with actual "zipper slits" out of the sea of "black skirts with zippers and slits". Anybody know where I can find a new favorite black skirt? I am not terribly picky about what material it's made from (except LEATHER/PLEATHER IS OUT), and I'll happily buy something online if need be.

honeycomb skirt

I saw someone yesterday wearing a wide knee-length white skirt covered in a pale grey honeycomb pattern. I want. I've done Google/Ebay searches for "hexagon skirt," "beehive skirt," "honeycomb skirt," etc. I saw this alleged skirt from a bus, so I couldn't just go ask the girl where she got it. If anyone's seen such a thing in any stores recently, I'd really appreciate it!

Confession: I'm a skirt chaser

I love this skirt from Garnet Hill but it is no longer available in my size. Attempts to find a similar skirt have failed. Can you help? I'm looking for a casual (like, to wear with tights, boots, and a sweater) black wool skirt that is slightly flared. Ideally it would come in petite XS or petite 2-4 (I'm only 5'0" tall), but if it's short enough then it can be a regular-person size 2.

I really liked the fabric, cut, and detailing of the Garnet Hill skirt. Everything else I've found so far has been too long or too dressy. Any ideas? Thank you for your help.

Please help me find a black floor length formal/evening skirt.

Please help me find a black floor length formal/evening skirt. I am in a performance where I am required to wear black, and I need a black floor length skirt, preferably a full skirt, size 6 or 8. It needs to be long, even extra long since I'm tall. I haven't been able to find anything that would fit me and looks appropriate for a formal, concert occasion. Really the only things that have at least the same idea are on goth sites or are for ballroom dancing.

I'm in NYC and am female.

Anyone have any ideas for formal wear sites that would have something like this (I've looked at Saks, Barrie Pace, Nordstroms, Macy's)?
Are there any performance related sites that sell clothing like this?

Please help me find what I'm looking for. Thank you!

I'm helping edit a dictionary, and I just got to the skirt entry, which contains the definition "informal: women regarded as sexually desirable." Now, I'm in my fifties and I think of that sense as "before my time," but before I go and tell them to add "dated" I want to double-check with the hip young MeFi crowd: do you know anybody younger than Grandpa Simpson who talks about "chasing skirt"?

Give me your best advice for biking in a skirt.

Give me your best advice for biking in a skirt. I'm riding my bike a lot more since I got an Electra Townie, but I am struggling with biking in a skirt. I tend to wear knee length skirts which blow up easily in the wind. I've tried clipping the skirt together with a clothespin, but find it bumps my knees very uncomfortably. I was wondering how others have dealt with this.

How do I get my skirt replicated?

How does one go about getting a tailor to clone one's favorite item of clothing? I sew, but not very well. I have an absolutely amazing skirt made by Illig several years ago, and every time I wear it I get tons of compliments. I want another one, before this one wears out (although it is rather tough).

It is a thick, stretchy plaid material. It is extremely long (hits my toes and I'm 5'10"). It has interesting details like cargo pockets and weird cinching ties and grommets down the side.

Due to these details, I think it might be decently hard to have someone make an exact replica. I also have no clue where to find this kind of fabric (it doesn't need to be the same plaid) because I've never found something this thick and this stretchy. Also, grommets...do tailors do that?

So, on to the questions:
1. Can I just hand the skirt over to a tailor and say, "Make me one of these, please"? How much might it cost?
2. Do I have to provide the material, or can the tailor sort it out? I have no clue how many yards I would need, although I'll venture 4 or 5.
3. Are there good alternatives to tailors to do this? Like some clothing-copiers online that would do it for me?
4. Will my skirt be safe? I'm almost too worried about losing it to give it to someone for a while, especially if I have to send it. However, I'm not sure pictures would do it justice.

TIA, and if anyone has any Philadelphia-centric recommendations, I would appreciate them greatly. I will be following this post closely, so please feel free to ask for clarifications.

Turning a Fashion Don't into a Fashion Do

How do you alter a dress into a skirt? Or should to go to a tailor? I got a dress at a thrift store and I find the top part hideous. Ruffles are involved. However the bottom part is this nice light fabric with this really awesome graphic flower print. It's an A-line dress so there is no waist therefore plenty of fabric. I would like to make it into a skirt. The most I've done with sewing is mending buttons and tears. I feel this is way beyond my capacity, but do you know of any books or sites that might guide me towards a possible if futile DIY answer?

Otherwise, if I do go to a tailor, are the ones in a typical dry cleaners educated/advanced enough to do this or should I go to a professional tailor? Or should I go to craigslist and try to get a Parsons student? What should I know/communicate when I'm talking to them?

And NY MeFites, if you happen to know any good tailors or fashion students, share the wealth :)

Thigh-rubbing friction

For all the big-thighed women out there... In hot weather, do you have problems with wearing skirts sans pantyhose and walking any distance? If so, how do you deal with the inner-thigh chafing? I am not overweight by any means and am in fact quite fit, but I do have somewhat fleshy upper thighs that touch for about two inches below the groin area when I'm standing up. In the summer if I wear skirts without pantyhose, I can't walk more than six blocks without starting to get painfully chapped in that two inch area. It's really embarrassing. I do notice other women who have a similar physique to me "waddling" a little, ie walking with their legs a little wide. The way I avoid that is by cutting off the lower legs of black pantyhose and wearing this pseudo-thigh girdle under my skirt, and therefore eliminating the upper-inner thigh friction. I feel like such a weirdo for having to resort to such DIY solutions, but I am surprised that there is no undergarment product catering to this problem. No one else I know seems to have this problem, and even my heaviest girlfriends wear skirts all year round. (I can't just wear full pantyhose in the summer, because I wear sandals and pantyhose-toe is tacky and weird when you're just going to the beach.) I have been doing all sorts of exercises focusing on my inner thighs to try and slim them for the sole purpose of being able to wear skirts, but nothing is helping. Am I completely alone in this, or is there a method of dealing that I just haven't heard of? Please help me find a way to be a breezy skirt-wearer without the thigh-rubbing issue!

Where's my pants?

If you lose part of a suit (like, say, my girlfriend lost her skirt) are there places you can go to get just a replacement piece? I remember reading about either websites or companies that sell this sort of thing but a google search is turning up nothing useful. Does this sort of thing exist? I know that there are places that'll match your China when you break a plate, so why not a suit skirt?
