Moving Grad-Students: Two of us are moving back to Ontario from Edmonton, Alberta. We need to ship ourselves and our stuff. Options include: buy a (cheapish) car/van and drive (we'd sell it upon arrival), one-way van rental (rather expensive?), fly and ship our stuff (Greyhound?). Any wisdom much appreciated. What's the cheapest way to move a bunch of banker's boxes across the United States? I have 98 sealed banker's boxes full of books, papers, and a few durable household items in New York City and want to move them to San Francisco. What's the cheapest way to do that short of driving them across the country myself? USPS, UPS, Fedex, etc. all want to treat these as 98 parcels, which is prohibitively expensive. I could pay a moving company to do it, but that's also quite expensive -- and it's not like I need that kind of don't-scratch-my-antiques level of care anyway. Isn't there a cheaper way to get 98 uniform, nonfragile boxes across the country?

Seeking recommendations for international shipping/moving companies. I have a small household's-worth to ship from California to the UK (no furniture that's worth keeping, but a large studio full of stuff). There are many companies online but I know from friends' experiences that these waters are shark-infested.

I want to ship less than a room's worth of furniture from a home in MA to an apartment in MD. Google turns up a bewildering array of services and the few quotes I've found (phone and email) seem high. Has anyone done something similar? How much did you ship, how far, and how much did you pay? Who did you use? [more inside]

I am moving from the West Coast to the East Coast and I'm wondering what the best way to move my beloved cat. I was originally going to bring her on my flight as a carry-on, but I'm thinking that the plane ride may be too long in a small pet carrier. There is also the option of checking her in as luggage, but most airlines don't allow this in the summer months (i.e. the time I'm moving). Any suggestions? Shipping is also an option; any suggestions on airline-friendly kennels that can attach water and food? Also, to sedate or not to sedate?

I will soon be moving permanently from California to the UK. Besides the headaches of visa applications and plane tickets, I have an awful lot of crap I need to ship over. I'm looking for the cheapest, safest way to ship large amounts of clothing, books, etc. overseas. I don't mind if the cheapest option means it will take 3 months to arrive. Any advice on this matter is welcome. [more inside]

My Mom is selling her house, moving to a new place and given me an ultimatum. She says I have one year to get my crap from her or it is no longer mine. As a result, I need to ship a large, antique, wooden cabinet 2,000+ miles. It probably weighs about 100 lbs. How can this be accomplished for a reasonable cost? What is a reasonable cost for this type of job? How do you protect the piece of furniture during shipping? Are there any companies you have worked with and recommend?

I have the opportunity to acquire some nice furniture from my folks, stuff I'd (as a student) could never afford. I don't know how to drive, nor do I have friends who would help with this. I'm looking for people who shipped things like 45lbs office chairs and large wooden desks to recommend a freight carrier that will pick up in boston and drop off in baltimore. Or even suggest a moving company. Basically, I know what to look for, I just want anecdotes and recommendations on the best (read: cheapest, I can wait a week so long as it gets here cheap) way to do this. As far as budget goes, I'd like to not spend more than $200 and if I can do it for $100 I'll be ecstatic.
