I want to invite a woman (via letter) I like out on a date to see a Shakespearean play later this month. I want it to read somewhat like the general language used in his writings, but also instantly understandable to someone not very familiar with his plays and/or language. If someone could point me to a resource to help out or if you're willing to rewrite it yourself, I'd be very thankful. [more inside]

Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble. Halloween is fast approaching and I need help creating some apothecary style props from the Bard's well known witches chant based on the introduction to That Scottish Play. Most of my audience isn't going to remember much past "eye of newt and toe of frog" but being a geek about details I'd like to try to create a tableaux of the entire contents of that cauldron. ShakespeareFilter: I'm trying to find a book--or something similar to it--that a classmate loaned to me briefly a few months back. Briefly, it had all of Shakespeare's plays with charts showing which scenes each character appeared in and the total number of lines each had. My classmate can't remember the author or title, so I'm stuck throwing this vague question out to the general public. Does anyone know where I can find something along these lines?

When did directors of plays and operas start the practice of overtly imposing their own visual interpretation of the play at the expense of the stage direction of the author? These days if you go to see a Shakespeare play, it's even odds that it's set in modern times, or the early 20th century, or what have you. Were there 19th century (or earlier!) productions of Shakespeare that set his plays in what were then "modern times"? At what point did staging old plays become just as much about the director's vision as the playwright's?

Shakespearefilter. One of my vices is collecting productions of Shakespeare's plays (particular Hamlet). I recently stumbled across this theatre group who have put two shows up online for download and I was wondering if anyone knew of any others which are available anywhere online. I can't imagine that this is the only group doing this. Ideally I'm looking for those in the canon which are produced less often such as Cymbeline or Measure for Measure hopefully in mp3 format. I have a book question. Members of my family have a small collection of old books. These are not first editions, but they all are 100+ year old books. We have a Knight's pictorial edition of the works of William Shakespeare edited by Charles Knight. It's subtitled doubtful plays and biography and dated 1882. Any ideas what this might be or what it may be worth? Any suggestions of websites that sell antique books that I could use as a price guide for old books? [more inside]
