I have an idea for yet another hairbrained social networking website (which paradoxically might hit it big :-) ). I've coded most of it up on a linux server using apache, php, mysql at softlayer.com. The hostname is registered at godaddy (which I can change if desirable). What's the minimum I need to do the following (I'd rather work on the website application logic and learn as little as possible about mail server administration for now): [more inside]

I would like to use the new release of Thunderbird (2.0) with my Yahoo account and am looking for a free SMTP service. I know Gmail lets you use its servers but apparently changes the 'From' field of the message to username@gmail.com for all messages. Is there any other service that I can use, apart from my ISP's (I shuffle between work, school and home). [more inside]

Is there a server based, spam filter that will work with any ISP? I have a friend who cannot change ISPs or email services, he is paying a lot for dial-up time, and he gets about 100 spam: 1 valid email. Is there a spam filter that will check his current email for him and delete the spam, allowing him to keep his current email and ISP? [more inside]

I need to allow a few people to access our mail server using Outlook from outside the building. They use OWA yet do not like having to use a web page to do this (yeah, I know...). I thought of setting up POP3 but am not sure what ports I need to open on the firewall (110, 25 do not seem to cut it). What is the functional difference between POP3 and IMAP and is either one better/easier to setup? (File folder sharing would be an optional objective). Microsoft's KB system sucks...any other useful articles out there?

Say you've got a domain and a server, but the account didn't come with any POP3 setup. Assuming you're not going to abandon that hosting provider for one reason or another, what's the best 3rd party POP account provider? And is this a huge headache?

I've been asked to redesign a medium-sized corp (60 employees) web site. The current host is dreadful and I want to switch it to Dreamhost, who I use for all my small clients without problem. How will moving their web site/domain to a different host affect their email? [MI]
