My mom is retiring this year, and I promised to take her on a trip to celebrate. Initially, we had planned on a 10-day road trip through the northeast in the fall to see the leaves change. However, she now wants to bring the dog (for good reasons - he gets violently ill if she boards him), so flying is out of the question. She doesn't have anything at all in mind for what she wants to do or see, only that we spend time together. We will be driving from south Louisiana, and can probably do a 10-hour or so day in the car each way. We have 7-10 days for the trip. Where should we go? [more inside]
I'd like to give a pedometer as a fun gift for an active senior; something as simple as a digital watch. Seeking one that's very easy and intuitive to use, and very simple to read and re-set. Most importantly, it must be self-contained- no need to plug into a computer or smartphone. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Family members have gotten an Android tablet for my 97-year-old grandmother. Please suggest some ways to make the tablet as friendly and easy to use as possible for someone who has computer experience, but who can be pessimistic about learning new things and can get frustrated with people trying to teach her. We're particularly interested in tablet settings and also methods for instructing her in its use, but also open to hearing about tutorials or apps that might make her experience smoother. I'm overseas, so I'll be passing along ideas to my dad. [more inside]

I'm looking for a few fun, interesting afternoon activities to do with a 95-year-old relative. She can't see well, can't hear well, has some short-term memory problems and is on a budget. But she's game for anything. [more inside]
Two questions, really: specifically, how can I get my aunt with vascular dementia to recognize that she needs help and can no longer live alone? And generally, I'm looking for blogs and support forums on dealing with people with dementia. [more inside]
