Antivirus protection without the Internet

We have some never-on-a-network PCs set up in a lab at work; all are running Windows Vista. We need a good way to keep up-to-date antivirus software on them without relying on an internet connection. [more inside]

MacBook possessed by mystery entity

So...I'm thinking my Mac has a virus. I have a Mac OS X 10.5.8. I keep running out of hard drive space and deleting files constantly, so I got Disk Inventory X to see where my space is. Turns out there is 20 GB of 130,000 text files on my computer in a hidden file marked "private". I can't see this "private" folder from the file manager...only from Disk Inventory X. What do I do? I'm keeping these Windows closed, getting bars installed

I got a new Windows machine. It's been a while since I used Windows (never Windows 7). What do I, as someone paranoid about viruses and malware, need to download and set up in order to be 99.99% sure that nothing untoward happens to my machine? [more inside]

Is my friend's Hotmail account hacked or not?

I got a spam email from my friend who has a hotmail account. It looks like the spam has been sent to everyone in his hotmail distribution list. My question is, how did the hackers do this? Did they need his password in order to get access to his distribution list? As far as I know he is still able to use his account which puzzles me. Wouldn't a hacker (if he had the password) quickly change the password so that they could keep sending spam out on that account?

Help me kill this autoexecuting at start script!

Is there a way to trace down where a script is attempting to start from on Windows XP? I had a bit of a drive-by download happen, and I mostly removed the infestation with some antispyware tools. However I manually deleted one file before getting the tools to do their work, and so some remnant of the startup process is trying to start this 36525.js script [more inside]

Installing Vista Securely

Those stories about Windows PCs getting infected within minutes of connecting to the internet... does that still apply in Vista SP1? Soon I'll be setting up a new PC put together from parts and doing a fresh install of Vista Ultimate with SP1 (retail). Should I do anything special to maximize security?

Virus protection stats?

I need your help to settle a debate. Could you suggest the safest antivirus setup, within the confines of Windows XP and a wireless internet connection, with the least bloat, and provide the statistics to prove it? I need more than simple AV comparatives. I need stats on the virtues of Firefox versus IE, on using two function-differentiated user accounts (admin versus everyday, with the 'everyday' account having no admin privileges), etc. Can you help? Anti-virus compartions and Vista Firewall?

Where can I find detailed information on anti-virus software comparisons? I've heard of and seen some charts that display details such as catch rates and etc but have never known the exact source. Something like this perhaps: http://virus.untangle.com/ but a more broad spectrum, preferablly one that includes AVG and Avast! Also what is the best firewall for Windows Vista?
