Visiting Edinburgh in January and wondering what the hot new things to do, eat, see, or experience there since my last trip 3 years ago. We usually enjoy unusual museums and collections, vintage menswear , fine dining, LGBT stuff, and historical tours and sites like the Mary King's Close tour (We're both suckers for the macabre). Lots of things are damp in Edinburgh, but I'm being quoted £6K to fix a damp problem in a flat I'm looking to buy. Standard advice seems to be to get a survey done by an independent surveyor who won't then try to sell a remedy, but I can't find one. [more inside]
We want to travel by car around Northern England and Scotland just after the new year (Jan 8-16) for a vacation/holiday. Where should we go given the Xmas/NY/Hogmanay holidays are just finished and weather might be…changable? One Brit, One American, mid 40s, likes culture, nature, art, off-the-wall stuff. [more inside]
Planning another trip, which means it’s time for another AskMe. This time: Glasgow (with a side trip to Edinburgh)… [more inside]
My wife lives in a rented apartment in Edinburgh. For several weeks, she's heard dripping in her bedroom intermittently, but didn't really think much of it, until last night, when she woke up to a soaked carpet. [more inside]
We've got until 1:45pm tomorrow in Edinburgh. I feel like we've hit most of the obvious sights. What else should we do? [more inside]
I am an American moving to Edinburgh soon from the Netherlands, and I want to begin speaking with a solicitor about what steps I need to take to prepare to purchase a home within the next year (or even sooner if possible). I need someone who has experience working with foreigners. I want to work with someone who is knowledgeable and a straightforward communicator. A personal recommendation from someone with prior experience buying or selling in Scotland would be helpful. Any agencies or individuals that you had a good experience with?
We’re moving to Edinburgh in the fall. We’re terribly excited, and have dozens of questions, so please answer as many or few as you feel like. Our special snowflake details are inside. [more inside]

We are headed to the UK in late July and plan to go to Scotland for about 9 days in early August. I just realized that Edinburgh will be in the midst of its festival season in August and my partner is now thinking maybe it will be unbearably crowded and expensive, and we should avoid it on this trip. Is Edinburgh doable in August if you don't particularly like crowds? Are there ways to lessen the pain? [more inside]
The Stand has been a long-running comedy club and Edinburgh Fringe Festival venue, first in Edinburgh, Scotland, and with later-opened branches in Glasgow and Newcastle upon Tyne. I noticed that there is now a New York City-based comedy club and restaurant called The Stand NYC. I didn't see any indication on the websites of either club that there was a connection. Is this an example of the use of a trade name in another national jurisdiction?
Can anyone recommend a butchers/game dealers in Edinburgh (Scotland)? Or if there's a really special one anywhere else along the Edinburgh-Glasgow corridor, or up to Perth?
My almost-husband and I are leaving for our Scottish honeymoon in less than a week. Hooray! I think I've finally nailed down most of the details—after many, many hours of scouring the Interwebs—but I do have some things I'm hoping that the Mefites over the pond or seasoned UK travelers can help me with. Mostly transit-based questions within (warning: I'm one of those people who absolutely must plan these kinds of ridiculous details in advance, to prevent myself from stressing out and becoming a complete nutjob), but also a few less-important (but more fun) bonus questions, just because. ScotlandFilter: Help me watch Eurovision tomorrow. I'm in Edinburgh for the weekend for a friend's wedding. I have Saturday night free, and I'd love to be able to find a pub where I can watch Eurovision in all its bizarre glory. I know almost nothing about the town, though--can anyone suggest a place to me?
We want to have Easter brunch in Edinburgh this year. Where to go? [more inside]
I am planning an April trip to Scotland and would like to take the West Highland train from Glasgow to Mallaig/Skye. Arriving in Skye, I would like to rent a car. Problem is, I would like to return to Edinburgh through Glencoe or Loch Lomond, and enjoy the flexibility that comes along with having your own car, rather than take the bus. Can I rent a one way car between Skye and Edinburgh? [more inside]
Scotland vacation help needed, please. We have the itinerary, now we just need suggestions on the best things to do! We'll be visiting Edinburgh, Inverness, and Glasgow. [more inside]
Bonehead and I are going to Scotland in July, and will be starting in Edinburgh and culminating in a singing session in Cullerlie, near Aberdeen. On the way I'd like to see the Highlands, Skye or maybe Oban. My question is twofold: what awesome things can Scottish Mefites suggest to us to do between July 15th and 23rd, and 2) any appetite for a meetup?
