teacherfites: I've been a pretty decent middle school special educator for a few years now, working with all kinds of disabilities but most of my kids have behavioral issues. Not to be overconfident, but want to mention I've been nominated as Teacher of the Year in my state, but more importantly, I've become the go-to confidante for almost all of my students. So far, so good. [more inside]

I'm taking an innovative course on using technology for humanitarian causes, taught by a professor I really like. But it's awful! How can I tell him what I think, and/or turn this disaster of a course into something worthwhile? [more inside]

What are the trends around the world underlying the most successful (I guess I am talking financially mostly) high schools around the world these days? What are the marketing buzzwords driving the race for students? My old high school is in trouble and I'd like to help if I can. [more inside]

Bad Economy Filter: In college now, will graduate in 2012 and aim to teach art. The caveat is that it will have taken me 6 years to graduate my undergraduate program because of transferring schools and all the confusion that new majors comes along with. So, here's my question... how do I give myself a leg up? Perhaps superfluous details inside. [more inside]

I'm posting this on behalf of a teacher friend of mine who wants your ideas: A university is developing an initiative in which pairs of professors, across disciplines, will meet up with small groups of first year students during their second semester to discuss themes of interest and promote intellectual engagement. These informal meetings will occur at least four times over a couple of months and can take place anywhere: in seminar rooms, in a dorm lounge, at a restaurant, at a professor's home, at an art gallery. So, what do we call these? [more inside]

Please help ensure the success of my friends new school teaching job. It looks like an excellent job in many respects, but there are two stumbling blocks: 1. The boss is tricky, likely a corporate psychopath. 2. staff are expected to work approximately 30% longer than regular school on-site hours, for no extra pay or compensation. more inside ... Blogging in the classroom. I've decided to set-up a blog for my students this semester. This will be the place for their response papers, writing exercises and a few other tidbits. It needs to have access for 5-10 members, a very easy set-up, free-to-near-free pricing (although I would pay or find the dollars to fund if it was warranted), and very clear posting/linking instructions for the students. Advice on selecting a blogging system needed. [more inside]

2) how much should I expect to pay for a) lessons and b) uniforms and equipment?
3) any good schools in northern VA people want to suggest?

A K-12 school I am involved in wants to be able to publish digital portfolios of student work on the web. As to additional functionality (i.e. Commenting on work, Blogging) I'm open to proposals. Since the budget doesn't allow us to pay someone to hack apache and write code we're looking for an out of the box solution. I believe that Userland's Manila would let me do this at least in part - are there any other solutions I can be looking at?
