I'm likely moving to California at the start of October. Recently, the location has tentatively changed to San Jose. I don't want this to happen, so please convince me that San Jose is the worst place ever, or give me some reasons for why it's really not that bad. [more inside]
We are (likely) headed to northern California for March 7-14. What should we do, and how should we divide our time? [more inside]
I’ve gotta take a quick trip to San Francisco this weekend. I think my Saturday and Sunday are full, but Friday night is still open. So I’ve got one meal to make the most of. What’s the best vegan option for one meal in the area? I’ll be flying in to San Jose, and staying somewhere between there and Santa Cruz, but I’ll have a car and am happy to go anywhere in the area. So where should I go?
I recently relocated to Santa Cruz, CA because I was offered a job. I brought my cat but now I am having a difficult time finding a place to live. I have a stable job and am a stable person but it seems like all the housing is being snapped up by students. I don't want to have to send my cat elsewhere just so I can live in this city :(. Looking for a decent motel around San Francisco/Santa Cruz with a heated pool and lots of teens/preteens hanging out (I have 12 and 15 year old daughters). Also good: inexpensive, no bed bugs, wifi. But the pool and other kids are really all they care about.
Last-minute decision: I have some extended time coming up (basically the month of July) and am considering a 3-4 week stay in Santa Cruz. What is a summer in Santa Cruz like? Is there a lot to do? I'll be spending part of the time working on a book, so it's not like I need to be occupied the entire time. I've looked on Craigslist for room shares and there seem to be plenty for short-term stays. Any other ideas? Are there areas that I would want to steer clear of for safety reasons, etc? As always, thanks in advance.

I've been accepted to and am visiting Pitzer tomorrow, as part of their student admit day. However, I loved UC Santa Cruz, and would love to hear whatever advice you may have for me in making my decision. [more inside]

I am considering moving to Santa Cruz for a Ph.D program. I visited the city for 4 days last week and really enjoyed the area. Everyone I have talked to mentions how expensive it is. It is true that housing is extremely expensive, renting too. But, I didn't find the food in the grocery stores to be outrageous, eating out wasn't terrible either. Unless I'm missing something, its the housing which gives the city its stigma for being expensive. Plus, there are 140 Ph.D students at UCSC which obviously make ends meet in some way (albeit poor college student life isn't too bad). Am I close to correct here? Also, I'd love to know what you think of the area!!

Motorcyclist/CaliforniaCoast/MemorialFilter. Please help my find- or narrow down- the location of a strip of road that my friend loved so we can scatter her ashes. [more inside]
I am moving from santa cruz to portland. My girlfriend and I recently(4 months ago) had a daughter and the cost of living here is so high that we feel there is more opportunity for us up there. We have been invited to stay with my girlfriend's parents for a few months until we get settled, but i am concerned with finding a job that will pay enough to support us. I will be the sole earner so that my daughter will be able to have a parent with her all the time. Any suggestions? I need to make at least $15/hr ... I have been doing construction related work for the last couple of years but would like to steer away from that in favor of something not so hard on the body. I'd appreciate any comments...
