I'll be in San Francisco for about twelve hours, and I would like to find a bookstore or two that have an amazing zine selection. Any suggestions? [more inside]
Excluding spas and meditation, what are the most relaxing but entertaining/engaging things to do in the Bay Area this weekend? [more inside]
We just decided to get married in San Francisco, in about a month. Do you have any recommendations for a wedding planner who will help with venues and food? We are thinking of an outdoor ceremony followed by a dinner at a restaurant or catered venue. Or a boat cruise with decent food. We don't need flowers, music, dancing, invitations, decorations or seating arrangements. We basically need someone to suggest an available venue (and get the requisite permits if needed) and organize the food reception afterwards. This will be for about 20-30 guests. Any suggestions on a specific location, or for a wedding planner? The goal is something like a cross between eloping and a wedding. Fast and fun! [more inside]
How does living in an area with near-constant overcast skies affect the placement of plants that are labeled "Full Sun", "Part Sun/Part Shade" or "Shade"? [more inside]
Apparently lodging has taken a jump up in San Francisco since I was last there. Also August 2nd seems to already be booking up. I remember staying at Beresford Arms and on Lombard St. for around $100. They are booked or don't exist anymore. I've adjusted up to $150 and I'm still having trouble While I dither things are being booked. Plan B or C is to Airport and Bart in or Oakland and Bart in. I've seen the other SF lodging posts and those seem to be gone too. Please help.
I'm a first time renter in SF and I'm not sure exactly what happens when my lease expires. [more inside]

I am in Canada and I've only ever booked flight within, or to-and-from, this country. I'm looking for tips on booking flights from San Francisco to San Salvador, and from San Salvador to Toronto. [more inside]
Driving around the Bay Area, I've always wondered: Why aren't the dry, barren hills around the bay inhabited? [more inside]
We (couple and 1.5yr old) will be in the city Fri and Sat and then Sun-Wed morning in Cazadero. We'll be staying at a hotel in Japantown and will not have a car while in the city. We are renting a house in Cazadero and we will have a car there. I have a number of related questions. [more inside]
I've been to both these cities before, so this time I want to explore some local fave places and grok the resident hipster vibe. Please point me in the direction of the Dolores Park of Portland/Austin. [more inside]
Can anyone recommend a friendly bridge (the card game) club in San Francisco? I wouldn't mind taking an intro class to brush up, since my knowledge of both conventions and strategy are pretty slipshod and semi-self-taught. Ideally there would be a critical mass minority of younger folks (let's say <30) around.
If I want to charge visitors a fee to stay in the apartment I rent form a landlord, what might I want in my lease? Would I absolutely need a clause about subletting? What are the exceptions? [more inside]
I'll be travelling to San Francisco for a conference the last week of May and I'd like to rent a bicycle and bike around a bit. Any bike-related stuff going on then? This and other bike questions inside. [more inside]
Husband is a devoted new father... almost TOO devoted. For Father's Day I want to give him a chance to get out the house for a while and maybe rekindle his interest in an old hobby. In college he was a member of the yachting club and he talks a lot about wanting to get back into sailing but not having the time. Without knowing anyone with a boat, is it possible to give him a sailing experience for a day? [more inside]
I'm looking for a list of iconic films that feature San Francisco. Incredibly, this question doesn't seem to have been asked here before, at least not that I can find. I've recently enjoyed include Dirty Harry and The Conversation. I'm particularly interested in similar movies, especially those that show SF as it used to be a few decades ago. But I'm also a fan of cheezy action movies like The Rock. Bonus points if they're currently available on Netflix Watch Instantly or Amazon Instant Video.
I have a land line in San Francisco. I'd like to switch to something other than AT&T - I really, really don't like giving AT&T my money. [more inside]
Where should I eat dinner tonight in the San Francisco Mission district? It will probably be just me. I like pretty much anything, but prefer the interesting hole-in-the wall to fine dining.
I'm going to SF with my partner for our first wedding anniversary - yay! We've been before and have seen some of the sights (list after the break), but are looking for things we might have missed, awesome places we haven't eaten at, great things we haven't seen, etc, so we can make the most of it. Only limiting factor: neither of us drive. [more inside]
I'm a photographer, and next Thursday I'm planning to shoot a fashion editorial in San Francisco. Being a smart cookie, I want to get a permit to shoot so that I don't get stopped, or arrested or, well, anything else nasty. But apparently I must submit the documents in person. What, if anything, can I do? [more inside]
I want to buy some art in San Francisco. The kind in frames that you hang on the wall. [more inside]
I'm planning a cycling trip to San Francisco to the Pigeon Point Lighthouse in Pescadero in July. I think I have a pretty good idea of how to get there by just following Highway 1, but I'm not sure how to get back. Instead of going back the way I came, I'd like to ride from Pescadero over the Santa Cruz mountains to Silicon Valley and catch the CalTrain into the city. Can anyone suggest a route? The shorter the better, so the station is not important! I know it'll be a climb.
I want to find a good yoga studio in San Francisco that offers both ashtanga and vinyasa/flow in a guided but fairly traditional style. Reasonable student rates and easy access from the Mission St BART are pluses. Recommendations? [more inside]
I live in San Francisco and just started biking. Whenever I bike somewhere and lock up out of sight, I start worrying about my bike being stolen. I know it won't actually suck that much when it happens (I'll be pissed, then get a new bike). How do I stop thinking of my bike as "that expensive popular-to-steal thing I just left outside oh no?" My grandparents are coming to visit me in the bay area for the first time. Snowflake: One has a vision impairment that makes it hard to see things far away. They'll be here three days, Saturday through Monday. What should we do together? [more inside]

i've been living in an apartment building in san francisco for 10 years and have a one-car garage. for much of that time i parked my car on the street, parallel to the curb, blocking my own driveway to some extent. i also had friends park there cars there, and when i had a rental car, i parked it there on and off for several months. no one ever got a ticket. a couple months ago i parked a friend's car there overnight and got a ticket. apparently someone had called in a complaint, although the car was extending only into my own driveway, and by a small amount at that. i protested the $98 ticket, saying that i was the driver and the only one authorized to call in a complaint, but it was denied. i have no idea who called in the complaint, and DPT will not give out that information. i plan to do an in-person hearing. has anyone successfully fought this sort of ticket? What to do for a one year anniversary with my SO that is also a San Franniversary? Bonus points for photographer expertise and relaxing suggestions. [more inside]
I'm going to be in The City aka Ess Eff aka San Francisco this weekend. Are there any must-see events, exhibits, performances, etc. going on? Where would I look to find this information in the future? Are the Bay Guardian and SF Weekly even still published?
This is actually more like a two part question so bear with me. We are very likely moving to the bay area in the near future and could use some guidance. Also, we are heading there in about 10 days as my wife has never been and I want to make sure she falls in love with it. [more inside]
I would like to take some kind of self-defense or martial arts class. Only problem? I'm a dude, I'm 34, and my left knee is not-so-great. Bonus points for resources in San Francisco. [more inside]
My birthday's coming up soon and I'd like to have a party-type thing with 10-15 of my closest friends. Previous years I've done group brunches, group dinners, and a picnic at Crissy Field, but I'm kinda stumped for ideas this year. Can you recommend any awesome birthday party venues in the SF Bay Area? Details of what I'm looking for below the fold. [more inside]
What generic thank-you gift (between $10-20) can I give to someone working in SF when the only contact information I have is their iPhone number? [more inside]
We are hoping to spend a long weekend in San Francisco in August and get married on a Monday at City Hall. We were looking at the weekend of August 10-11, but it looks like the Outside Lands festival is going on that weekend. Is the city going to be crazy that weekend? Will it be hard to find hotels & make restaurant reservations? Will the hotels be more full than usual with partying people? Should we do it the weekend before (August 3-4) instead, or is it likely that there's something else going on that weekend that will make things just as crowded? Any other logistical advice? We are doing a small family wedding - probably 11 people, including us and two small kids. Thanks very much!
I am in San Francisco for a few days visiting a friend. My friend has a board that needs to be shipped to Texas. I have called the local surf shop (Wise Surf), but they don't have any board boxes at the moment, and won't have any until well after I leave. Is there a service (UPS, FedEx, etc) that will take a board, package and ship it for us? I can't find any such on the Googles. Cost is not a huge issue, we just want to get this done.
I've noticed something kind of unusual in many of the residential houses in San Francisco. Often times there's a primary residence facing the street (for example a three-story Victorian) and then a second, more modern building in the back yard (like a one- or two-story cottage). There's a second street number and usually a little gate to access the back building. It seems like a different family occupies the back unit than the front unit (and the front unit is sometimes further subdivided into what I assume are condos). A bunch of naive questions: [more inside]
My friends and I are trying to find a way to purchase the 'Swag' hat in Miami colors that 4-star recruit Stacy Coley is wearing here. Can you help us? Money isn't an issue, within reason. [more inside]

Oh no! Liquid went down for a winter break! Just as I arrived in SF and was hoping to put in a few rides next week... is there another way to ride a decent (does not have to be pro) road bike for less than $60/day? Have helmet, safe night storage, but no lock, no lights. Rides planned for Tue/Wed/Thu next week. Any suggestions? TIA!

I am looking for a rental agent in San Francisco, but I'm confused about how they work. I am looking for the equivalent of a realtor -- someone who has access to all the listings, and will show me various properties (regardless of who owns them) until I find one I like. Does this exist for renting, and do you have any recommendations for someone who does this work? [more inside]
