Things to do in SF during Burning Man

The burn is about to begin, and San Francisco and the East Bay are about to vacate. I, however, have been left behind, holding down the fort at work while others party in the desert. Things aren't all bad though, as being in SF during Burning Man comes with some advantages - like being able to actually find parking or not having to wait as long for a cone at Humphrey Slocombe. What are other things to do in the Bay Area that are busy much of the year but not as crowded during Burning Man?

San Francisco public transit from SFO to Nob Hill area?

I'm travelling to San Francisco today for a conference. It'll be my first time there, and I'd like to take public transit from the airport to my hotel - the Fairmont, on Mason St. It looks like I can take a train (BART?) from the airport to Powell St., Montgomery St., or Embarcadero, and walk from there. Is it reasonable to ride the train at 7 PM with a largeish rolling carryon bag and a backpack? Which station should I walk from, if I don't mind a bit of a walk but want to avoid overly-sketchy areas?

San Francisco for teenagers.

My younger brother, a rising senior in high school, will be visiting me in the Bay Area next week. We will have 2-3 days to spend in the city (really, any place accessible by Caltrain). I need an itinerary of fun places to check out. The main criteria are that anything you recommend should be easily accessible by public transport, not too remote, and also immediately spectacular for teenage boys and other people without particular interests. Yes: museums with minimal reading, weird architecture, cable cars, great views, robots and video games, and so on. No: major league sports, "funky boutiques," "must-eat restaurants." The rest of our week will be mostly spent outdoors, so indoors is OK. Thanks for suggestions!

Dealing with future earthquakes in California

What do Californians think and feel about the possibility of future big earthquakes in that region, especially the so-called "Big One"? I'm looking for articles which really get into how those who dwell there handle that knowledge, respond to it, and so on. Articles about building standards or government response are fine, but I would like to know about individuals, groups, businesses and the like. [more inside]

how to plan a San Fran wedding in 30 days or less

We just decided to get married in San Francisco, in about a month. Do you have any recommendations for a wedding planner who will help with venues and food? We are thinking of an outdoor ceremony followed by a dinner at a restaurant or catered venue. Or a boat cruise with decent food. We don't need flowers, music, dancing, invitations, decorations or seating arrangements. We basically need someone to suggest an available venue (and get the requisite permits if needed) and organize the food reception afterwards. This will be for about 20-30 guests. Any suggestions on a specific location, or for a wedding planner? The goal is something like a cross between eloping and a wedding. Fast and fun! [more inside]

San Francisco Lodging

Apparently lodging has taken a jump up in San Francisco since I was last there. Also August 2nd seems to already be booking up. I remember staying at Beresford Arms and on Lombard St. for around $100. They are booked or don't exist anymore. I've adjusted up to $150 and I'm still having trouble While I dither things are being booked. Plan B or C is to Airport and Bart in or Oakland and Bart in. I've seen the other SF lodging posts and those seem to be gone too. Please help.

Can anyone recommend a friendly bridge (the card game) club in San Francisco? Iconic films featuring San Francisco

I'm looking for a list of iconic films that feature San Francisco. Incredibly, this question doesn't seem to have been asked here before, at least not that I can find. I've recently enjoyed include Dirty Harry and The Conversation. I'm particularly interested in similar movies, especially those that show SF as it used to be a few decades ago. But I'm also a fan of cheezy action movies like The Rock. Bonus points if they're currently available on Netflix Watch Instantly or Amazon Instant Video.

Cycling routes from Pescadero to Caltrain in Silicon Valley?

I'm planning a cycling trip to San Francisco to the Pigeon Point Lighthouse in Pescadero in July. I think I have a pretty good idea of how to get there by just following Highway 1, but I'm not sure how to get back. Instead of going back the way I came, I'd like to ride from Pescadero over the Santa Cruz mountains to Silicon Valley and catch the CalTrain into the city. Can anyone suggest a route? The shorter the better, so the station is not important! I know it'll be a climb.

How to fight a ticket for blocking your own driveway in San Francisco?

i've been living in an apartment building in san francisco for 10 years and have a one-car garage. for much of that time i parked my car on the street, parallel to the curb, blocking my own driveway to some extent. i also had friends park there cars there, and when i had a rental car, i parked it there on and off for several months. no one ever got a ticket. a couple months ago i parked a friend's car there overnight and got a ticket. apparently someone had called in a complaint, although the car was extending only into my own driveway, and by a small amount at that. i protested the $98 ticket, saying that i was the driver and the only one authorized to call in a complaint, but it was denied. i have no idea who called in the complaint, and DPT will not give out that information. i plan to do an in-person hearing. has anyone successfully fought this sort of ticket? Is it better to avoid visiting San Francisco during Outside Lands?

We are hoping to spend a long weekend in San Francisco in August and get married on a Monday at City Hall. We were looking at the weekend of August 10-11, but it looks like the Outside Lands festival is going on that weekend. Is the city going to be crazy that weekend? Will it be hard to find hotels & make restaurant reservations? Will the hotels be more full than usual with partying people? Should we do it the weekend before (August 3-4) instead, or is it likely that there's something else going on that weekend that will make things just as crowded? Any other logistical advice? We are doing a small family wedding - probably 11 people, including us and two small kids. Thanks very much!

Two houses, one lot

I've noticed something kind of unusual in many of the residential houses in San Francisco. Often times there's a primary residence facing the street (for example a three-story Victorian) and then a second, more modern building in the back yard (like a one- or two-story cottage). There's a second street number and usually a little gate to access the back building. It seems like a different family occupies the back unit than the front unit (and the front unit is sometimes further subdivided into what I assume are condos). A bunch of naive questions: [more inside]
