San Francisco apartment renting - is this how it really works? I'm looking for a new apartment in way-too-hot rental market of San Francisco. I found a place, and the unit looks great, but dealing with the property management company in a short amount of time has been a hassle (yes, welcome to San Francisco). [more inside]
I've got a job offer in San Rafael. Great! I live in San Francisco without a car. Boo! Since public transit outside of SF proper is a nightmare and buying a car is a deal-breaker for me, is 511 Rideshare a reliable option? [more inside]
My roommate got very drunk, put some chicken in a covered pot on the stove to reheat, and fell asleep. I woke up to an acrid-smelling room (my room is on the other side of the house from the kitchen) and the hallway smoke detector going off. She could have easily started a serious fire (she didn't wake up when the alarm went off, and when I woke her up, she initially didn't even remember that she'd put something on the stove). Even though she didn't burn the kitchen down, the house smells TERRIBLE. Like possibly uninhabitably terrible. Can my landlord evict her for this? Can he make her pay for any necessary smoke removal services? What are MY rights here? Mostly I want her gone, but if that's not possible...? We are in a rent-controlled apartment in SF, and each of the roomates is on a separate lease (not month to month).
I am a forty-something Londoner who works for a digital marketing agency and I've been given the opportunity to move to San Francisco with work. My company has generously allowed me to take a six-month secondment to see if I like it. More inside... [more inside]

I'm considering attending a six-month web development bootcamp in San Francisco that runs from October to April, and I'm wondering what I can expect to pay for housing. I'm interested in learning both about cheaper arrangements like SROs in Chinatown and housing oriented towards students, as well as about what it might cost to get a room in a "normal" multi-bedroom apartment for that period. My spouse is about to be offered a new job that splits time between Emeryville (most of the time) and Redwood City. Where should we look for a house? Bonus earthquake question. [more inside]
I am considering leaving a tenure track position in the humanities to follow my partner to the Bay Area. In order to compare the options, I need some idea of what I'd do there. [more inside]
I'm moving to California from Michigan to take a job at HP. Do you have recommendations for a 2 bedroom apartment that meets my needs? Safety and dog walkability are prime concerns. Especially interested in perspectives on Prometheus Apartments Metropolitan and Americana. [more inside]
I have a job offer in San Francisco. I understand that renting there is more difficult than it's ever been. My requirements are: I want to be able to walk + bike + BART/Bus to work, which is around South Beach. Other than that, I am cool with East Bay, South, whatever. I could swing $2500-ish a month, but that is an upper boundary. Tell me about neighborhoods, tell me whether there exist "apartment headhunters" who could reliably do this for me, school me thoroughly. Thank you in advance.
I'm looking for a possibly regular volunteer opportunity in the east bay (oakland or berkeley) working with seniors, homeless, or needy. Tell me about the volunteer org you know of that does great work and is a great place! Some random criteria: [more inside]
I'm looking for therapists in San Francisco and I just found out that I'm covered under United Behavioral Health. I'm wondering if people've had any experience seeing a therapist or a psychiatrist through them, and how I might go about finding someone in their provider directory who'd a good match for me. I'd also really appreciate any recommendations for therapists in SF who take UBH. [more inside]
We just decided to get married in San Francisco, in about a month. Do you have any recommendations for a wedding planner who will help with venues and food? We are thinking of an outdoor ceremony followed by a dinner at a restaurant or catered venue. Or a boat cruise with decent food. We don't need flowers, music, dancing, invitations, decorations or seating arrangements. We basically need someone to suggest an available venue (and get the requisite permits if needed) and organize the food reception afterwards. This will be for about 20-30 guests. Any suggestions on a specific location, or for a wedding planner? The goal is something like a cross between eloping and a wedding. Fast and fun! [more inside]

So I've lived in beautiful San Francisco, California since 2005, but I've recently started a job down in Sunnyvale. I can take Caltrain down there, but it's an hour's trip plus half an hour on either end to get from home/work to the Caltrain station in question. This is not sustainable, so I'd like to move south. I'm 31, single, and a city boy from way back, so moving to The Suburbs gives me pause. Also, I sold the only car I've ever owned back in '05 shortly after I moved here. So I have two questions: [more inside]

I live in an oldish (1920s) apartment building, in a studio. A while ago I tried the time-honored "scream and rant to an empty room" method of anger management--and got a visit from a dozen cops my neighbor called, and who went through my place to check that I wasn't axe-murdering someone or anything like that. This is, of course, not sustainable, but if I can't rant at home, where can I rant? [more inside]
