I've enjoyed the discussion on this post
about America's worst highways, but I have a particular interest in seeing the other side of the coin - I'm going to be driving from DC to San Francisco in early October (in a minivan full of everything I own that is too delicate/bulky/valuable to send by mail--it's not much but it's not nothing) and I want to know: what route is the least maddening? At least, which parts have better options than others?
I'm going to take about a week at it (hoping to not do more than 7-8 hours of driving a day). Bonus points for suggesting ideal places (not far from the interstate) to start the day with an ~hourlong bike ride.
My spouse is about to be offered a new job that splits time between Emeryville (most of the time) and Redwood City. Where should we look for a house? Bonus earthquake question. [more inside]
Mefites of San Francisco: Where do you live? Where should I live? When should I move? How does this happen? I'm a special snowflake with my own special snowflake needs. [more inside]
We are moving from Florida to San Francisco and need to change banks- we're not super knowledgeable about this stuff and will definitely research more, but I'd like to get some on-the-ground opinions on how various local banks/credit unions have worked for them. Great customer service and low fees are of course stuff we care about a lot. [more inside]
Any advice on getting a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco? [more inside]
I'm moving to California from Michigan to take a job at HP. Do you have recommendations for a 2 bedroom apartment that meets my needs? Safety and dog walkability are prime concerns. Especially interested in perspectives on Prometheus Apartments Metropolitan and Americana. [more inside]
So I've just gotten a job in San Francisco and my GF and I will therefore be leaving New York and moving. I've never lived more than 125 miles from NYC before, so I need help with understanding the logistics here. [more inside]
This is actually more like a two part question so bear with me. We are very likely moving to the bay area in the near future and could use some guidance. Also, we are heading there in about 10 days as my wife has never been and I want to make sure she falls in love with it. [more inside]
I'm a single young adult with a college degree and student loan debt. I live in a sterile small city with limited job prospects. I want to move out and get an entry-level or temporary job in a coastal U.S. city (NYC, LA, SF, Seattle). Please walk me through the logistics and help me devise a plan, as well as offer any advice you have on making it on your own in a new city (essentially, how to be an independent, self-sufficient adult). Should I move to San Francisco? Every reason in the world to move, and one reason not to. [more inside]
You've been offered the same position with the same company in your choice of two offices: Seattle or San Francisco. The salary is the same in both positions but, due to a cost of living adjustment, the pay is higher in SF. What are some of the factors you'd consider in deciding where to go? Which would you choose and why? [more inside]
I will likely be moving from Australia to San Francisco to take a job soon. Which neighbourhood would be best for me personally to live?

What's the best place for me in the SF Bay Area? [more inside]
So I've lived in beautiful San Francisco, California since 2005, but I've recently started a job down in Sunnyvale. I can take Caltrain down there, but it's an hour's trip plus half an hour on either end to get from home/work to the Caltrain station in question. This is not sustainable, so I'd like to move south. I'm 31, single, and a city boy from way back, so moving to The Suburbs gives me pause. Also, I sold the only car I've ever owned back in '05 shortly after I moved here. So I have two questions: [more inside]
I'm 18 in downstate NY, and I've been offered a retainer position at a San Francisco company. I'm looking to to move out there in the end of August, and I have some questions about apartments, the city, and big leaps in life. San Francisco 101? [more inside]
Please help a new grad move to San Francisco. I will probably arrive on June 1 and start working June 10, and I have $1500 for the whole move in process. Where do I stay while I'm apartment hunting? A hotel is very expensive and a hostel is pretty cramped. I could probably stay on a friend's couch but are there any other reasonable options for 1 month stays? [more inside]
Moving to San Francisco for work in June, when should we look for an apartment? We can fly down for a weekend in April or May, or we can look once we get there and stay at a hotel/hostel in the meantime. What's going to be the best way to find a good place? We want to live in the city.

My fiance and I just graduated from Purdue and we're preparing for moving to California... him to San Francisco (job at Dreamworks) and me to Los Angeles (grad school at UCLA). Pre-dreamworks-job-offer, we thought we would both be in LA, so all the problems/considerations for the move pretty much just doubled. Not to mention that when it is all said and done, we're going to be doing the long-distance thing for at least a year. I know that we're capable people and can get through this just fine together, but I'm kind of overwhelmed at the moment and could use some advice. [more inside]

Does anyone know the San Francisco private school system? Want a seriously engaging and academic (also nurturing, non-competitive) school for my (currently) 3rd and K boys, can't find any online guides worth anything, don't have many contacts in the city. We've been public school people all our lives but I don't think it's going to work with this move. [more inside]

I'm moving from NYC to SF in June, to take a job at UCSF. I'm a little daunted by the prospect of yet another transcontinental move, so I thought I'd just ask for general advice, as I'm not even sure I know the right questions to ask. What do you know that you think I ought to know about moving cross-country to SF? [more inside]
BAY AREA FILTER: Hey everyone... one of my best friends and his wife are moving to San Francisco, and I offered to help them figure out where they may want to move. If you live there, or have lived there, where would you recommend? They'd like an active lifestyle, and safe. Aside from that, he's making 50k and needs easy access to Mission Bay for work. They also really want public transit.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
