SFFilter! I have a friend who has a photography assignment due on Monday -- six photos, with the theme of portals/entrances. They need to take photos of six distinctive entranceways/ doorways/ portals/ passages in San Francisco. Places that open up to amazing, distinctive sights and vistas... possibly even some outdoor locations, garden gates, etc. that are semi-enclosed, and have interesting subjects behind them. They'd especially appreciate Art Deco subjects and locations within walking distance of the downtown.
Can the MeFi hivemind recommend some great portals to shoot, with a sense of mystery, wonder, and excitement on what lies beyond?

I'm spending a working sabbatical in Berkeley from July 25-August 25. I grew up there, so I have a general sense of places to go, but I'm out of it in terms of what cool organizations/spaces do cool and crazy things that I should keep tabs on while I'm in town in Berkeley, Oakland, and SF. I know about the Prelinger Archive and Southern Exposure and the Roxie in SF, but that's about it. What mailing lists and websites for different places should I be keeping my eyes on while I'm there?

Suggestions for portrait painters in Vancouver or San Francisco? We're trying to find a painter to commission two portraits for an anniversary present. The painter should be within striking distance to either city and have portraits in their portfolio. And yes, we are generally thinking of paintings, but should you know of a fantastic photographer in the same vein, post it here too.

I'm going to San Francisco for a week: 2/7-2/13. The theme for my activities will be "ingenuity." First, I'm looking for technology related art but I'm open anything that's cool and techy or even anything that makes you think, "Wow! ingenious!"
