I'll be travelling to San Francisco for a conference the last week of May and I'd like to rent a bicycle and bike around a bit. Any bike-related stuff going on then? This and other bike questions inside.

Husband is a devoted new father... almost TOO devoted. For Father's Day I want to give him a chance to get out the house for a while and maybe rekindle his interest in an old hobby. In college he was a member of the yachting club and he talks a lot about wanting to get back into sailing but not having the time. Without knowing anyone with a boat, is it possible to give him a sailing experience for a day?

I'm looking for a list of iconic films that feature San Francisco. Incredibly, this question doesn't seem to have been asked here before, at least not that I can find. I've recently enjoyed include
Dirty Harry and
The Conversation. I'm particularly interested in similar movies, especially those that show SF as it used to be a few decades ago. But I'm also a fan of cheezy action movies like The Rock. Bonus points if they're currently available on Netflix Watch Instantly or Amazon Instant Video.

Where should I eat dinner tonight in the San Francisco Mission district?
It will probably be just me. I like pretty much anything, but prefer the interesting hole-in-the wall to fine dining.

I'm going to SF with my partner for our first wedding anniversary - yay! We've been before and have seen some of the sights (list after the break), but are looking for things we might have missed, awesome places we haven't eaten at, great things we haven't seen, etc, so we can make the most of it. Only limiting factor: neither of us drive.

I'm a photographer, and next Thursday I'm planning to shoot a fashion editorial in San Francisco. Being a smart cookie, I want to get a permit to shoot so that I don't get stopped, or arrested or, well, anything else nasty. But apparently I must submit the documents in person. What, if anything, can I do?

I'm planning a cycling trip to San Francisco to the Pigeon Point Lighthouse in Pescadero in July. I think I have a pretty good idea of how to get there by just following Highway 1, but I'm not sure how to get back.
Instead of going back the way I came, I'd like to ride from Pescadero over the Santa Cruz mountains to Silicon Valley and catch the CalTrain into the city. Can anyone suggest a route? The shorter the better, so the station is not important! I know it'll be a climb.

I live in San Francisco and just started biking. Whenever I bike somewhere and lock up out of sight, I start worrying about my bike being stolen. I know it won't actually suck that much when it happens (I'll be pissed, then get a new bike). How do I stop thinking of my bike as "that expensive popular-to-steal thing I just left outside oh no?"

i've been living in an apartment building in san francisco for 10 years and have a one-car garage. for much of that time i parked my car on the street, parallel to the curb, blocking my own driveway to some extent. i also had friends park there cars there, and when i had a rental car, i parked it there on and off for several months. no one ever got a ticket.
a couple months ago i parked a friend's car there overnight and got a ticket. apparently someone had called in a complaint, although the car was extending only into my own driveway, and by a small amount at that. i protested the $98 ticket, saying that i was the driver and the only one authorized to call in a complaint, but it was denied. i have no idea who called in the complaint, and DPT will not give out that information.
i plan to do an in-person hearing. has anyone successfully fought this sort of ticket?

We are hoping to spend a long weekend in San Francisco in August and get married on a Monday at City Hall. We were looking at the weekend of August 10-11, but it looks like the
Outside Lands festival is going on that weekend. Is the city going to be crazy that weekend? Will it be hard to find hotels & make restaurant reservations? Will the hotels be more full than usual with partying people? Should we do it the weekend before (August 3-4) instead, or is it likely that there's something else going on that weekend that will make things just as crowded? Any other logistical advice? We are doing a small family wedding - probably 11 people, including us and two small kids. Thanks very much!

I am in San Francisco for a few days visiting a friend. My friend has a board that needs to be shipped to Texas. I have called the local surf shop (Wise Surf), but they don't have any board boxes at the moment, and won't have any until well after I leave.
Is there a service (UPS, FedEx, etc) that will take a board, package and ship it for us? I can't find any such on the Googles.
Cost is not a huge issue, we just want to get this done.

I've noticed something kind of unusual in many of the residential houses in San Francisco. Often times there's a primary residence facing the street (for example a three-story Victorian) and then a second, more modern building in the back yard (like a one- or two-story cottage). There's a second street number and usually a little gate to access the back building. It seems like a different family occupies the back unit than the front unit (and the front unit is sometimes further subdivided into what I assume are condos). A bunch of naive questions:

I am looking for a rental agent in San Francisco, but I'm confused about how they work. I am looking for the equivalent of a realtor -- someone who has access to all the listings, and will show me various properties (regardless of who owns them) until I find one I like. Does this exist for renting, and do you have any recommendations for someone who does this work?

Every year for our gift exchange, there's a theme. This year the theme is kind of action - adventure related, think about some of the activities on the Amazing Race. I'd like to give something more "do something" than "get something" this year, given the following parameters:
- Less than $100
- Probably within 1 - 2 hours drive of the East bay / Oakland / Walnut Creek, California
- Gift will be for an individual, but with a family, so family friendly preferred
- Will mail me a gift certificate / gift card online or via phone.
I'm looking for things like zip lines, running-related, climbing activities, bungee jumping, etc.
I don't live in the area so the phone / email / online part is important since I can't go down in person.
