What Do I Need To Know About Hostels in San Francisco?

I'm going to be in San Francisco 10/30-11/2(ish. may stay a day or two more). I am attending a conference at Westin St. Francis. To save money, I want to stay in a hostel. There seems to be plenty in the immediate area. But I've never stayed in a hostel and I just don't know the area. What should I be looking for and what should I expect? [more inside]

Help me find published portraits of everyday folk in SF in the early 2000s

Between 2001 and 2004, I lived in the SF Bay Area and looked forward to a weekly column in a local paper (don't remember which - probably not SF Chronicle, but maybe a smaller publication?) which featured a profile of an interesting local "everyday folk" along with a pen-and-ink portrait. I especially loved the charming portraits. In particular, I remember one of a guy selling boiled crab at the Pier. Does anyone remember this? What was the name of the column, and who was the artist?

Where to send my grandfather's memoir?

I recently finished editing my grandfather's memoir and I'm wondering what institutions may be interested in a copy. He is a German Jew (b. Halberstadt) who left for San Francisco in 1934. Topics: his early childhood (family life, local businesses, Jewish life/education, shifts under Nazi regime), the voyage, a good deal about growing up in San Francisco in the 30s and 40s, some WWII Army engineer anecdotes of France/Belgium, Berkeley in the 50s, the technology industry, MIT in the 60s, and more. Reassure me that I can get a CA driver's license

I have just moved to San Francisco after living overseas for 4 years. My old US license (Massachusetts) expired two weeks ago. I am required to get a CA license within 10 days, and I need a US license anyway for things like Scoot, which I'll be relying on for commuting. Please reassure me that I will be able to prove residency despite a "soft landing" housing situation meaning I don't have a lot of the traditional documentation. [more inside]

Mom's day out in San Francisco

A new friend and I are spending Sunday without our babies in San Francisco. We are excited! But neither of us really know the city, and also we are used to doing child-centered things like going to parks or libraries or whatever, so our brains are mush. What do adults do in San Francisco besides the deYoung museum? Looking for offbeat, fun suggestions that don't totally break the bank. Thank you!

YANMD what could be going on here?

I have health insurance and a doctor but it’s been almost a year without figuring out the problem. I am not sure what else to do at this point. Long description of symptoms and tests below. I have been having intermittent episodes of lightheadedness. That is I feel weak and like I need to sit down (It’s not dizziness, the room is not spinning). It comes sometimes with nausea and seems to be aggravated by other things that make me feel ill - being too warm and being in stuffy spaces definitely can bring it on, being sleep deprived. It sometimes is accompanied by a pang around my stomach on the left. It makes me feel hot and ill and tired. [more inside]
