Buying a used European car for $5k or less after a car-less decade: y/n?

Used car filter: after a decade without owning a car, I'd like to get back into the game. I'd prefer to spend $5k or less. I understand this means older cars/higher miles. I find myself drawn to early 2000s VW Golfs/GTIs, late-90s BMW 300 series, '90s Saabs, early '00s Volvos. Are any of these types going to be substantially more reliable or cheaper to maintain than others? [more inside]

Should I purchase a Saab?

I will be looking for a car soonish. I've always had a hankering to own a Saab and ended up with different vehicles. My question is, since Saab went under is it harder to find parts for them or repair places? Is is more spendy then. I'm not looking to purchase a NEWer Saab. Also are they alright to work on on my own or are they a huge pain? Im no automechanic by any means but I do like to change my own oil and repair what I am capable of repairing. Or I will take recommendations for other cars. I prefer manual and hatchback.

Saab Mechanic in Seattle?

Can anyone recommend a good Saab mechanic in Seattle? I have a Saab 9-2X and I was hoping to find a place to take it close to Capitol Hill (or at least a straightforward bus ride away from the hill or downtown). None of my friends own Saabs, so that route hasn't yielded any recommendations.. The car doesn't currently have any major problems, but I'm tired of driving all over town (and taking multiple buses back!) when something does come up.

Sad news for Saab owners today.

With the sad news of Saab's liquidation today and a two year old Saab in the garage - any advice on what to do? Sell quickly or keep and just run it into the ground, so to speak? It runs great and we really like it but do we want to be stuck with a car that is defunct. How to get it serviced years from now, etc.?

You built a time machine... out of a '74 SAAB wagon?!

I'm considering going back to the good old days, when cars were simple and could be easily repaired by a competent home mechanic with basic tools. Problem is, I'm a SAAB junkie and the particular older car I'm considering (the 1970's era 95 wagon with the V4 Ford engine) is rare & quirky. Am I crazy to be considering a rare Swedish antique for basic transportation? Do I have the right idea but the wrong car? Help me, MeFi greasemonkeys! [more inside]

Beating out a dent in an '88 Saab

BodyShopFilter: I managed to put a big ol' dent in the fender of my 88 Saab. I'm not too upset (anymore) about the dent, but it did put a bulge in the track that my hood runs along. I want to pound the dent out. How do I do it? Do I need a special hammer? Any precautions/tips/tricks? Should I just pay the autobody guy to do it right?
