My friend runs a small company that is growing. They're starting to run into file-sharing problems (versioning, archiving, etc.). Laboring under the bizarre belief that I know something about this stuff, my friend has asked for my help. [more inside]

I have a three person Mac OS X office where we need to have remote access to about 4GB of files. I have looked around extensively for a solution and so far have not found an acceptable one. We have tried to use Back to my Mac and Apple Remote Desktop but the other two users are not that technically adept and it seem too complicated for them. Out problem is further complicated by the fact that we sometimes access the same files, so we can have version problems as well. Back to my Mac has never worked period.
Could I use Amazon S3 storage? And manage with Subversion or Git? Are there reasonable clients for Subversion and Git. Drobo with network card seem over the top and too costly.
Having the files on the cloud would be a perfect solution, however a local solution that could be accessed from anywhere will work as well.
To further complicate we are thinking of having one person access via PC.

What are some good ways of treating an arbitrary group of related projects in a source control system as a single project? CVS has ampersand modules, Subversion has externals, but they're both flawed. I'm looking for workarounds, alternatives or ideas I have not thought of before. [more inside]

I'm helping manage a project which has a lot of different document types contributed and edited by a lot of different people. Program code, bitmaps, text documents with homebrew markup code, PDFs, and a whole lot more all need to live together in the same repository.
I was using SVN, but many of the people on the site are pretty non-technical. I had to switch to a mailing list from a real project management forum, because people weren't consistently able to get the RSS feed working for the forum. I know people are likely to say we should use a wiki, but I haven't liked any of them--they're great for documentation (and that is a lot we're working on) but they don't really handle things like programming code and desktop publishing files especially well.
Ideally, the source control would look just like a local directory, and users could load and save files to it and the merging and versioning would happen transparently. As close to that as possible would be great. A specific wishlist is inside. Any ideas? [more inside]

I'm doing some consulting as a release manager on a webapp. I recently got the programmers to start using subversion (by turning off their access to their old development areas...) and their own sandboxes, and releases go more smoothly than ever. But I'm getting configuration files that have to be individualized for environments leaking into the trunk, and I want to get my release process down to "type command. hit enter." What to do?
