How to get away from Dropbox.

I'm trying to not use that terrible service. I dislike it's clunky interface, it's pricing structure, and it's lack of transparency. What I really want is a Samba server that requires authentication that I can just, like, rent monthly. We all use laptops, and often work off-site, so we need a central file repository that seamless integrates with Mac OS. Hence my thoughts on SMB. I'm also open to other solutions. Our needs are simply: off-site file rw access, Mac compatible. I'm also open to an on-site fileserver, but that might require some re-working of the (shitty comcast modem's) firewall. [more inside]

Wireless headset and softphone setup for Mac-based SMB?

For the last two years I have been trying to implement what I think is a pretty straightforward VOIP solution which has in turn probably taken around twelve years off my life. We operate a great IP-PABX system in our 10-person Mac-Laptop based office that we are very happy with, and for the last three years have been running IP handsets but have been desperately seeking a solution that would enable us to use softphones with wireless headsets (non-bluetooth). Has anyone here done anything similar with a degree of success? My list of demands is as follow: [more inside]

Windows networking for dummies

Help this Unix guy understand Windows domains, security and file sharing. I'm a software tester who's mostly worked with unix systems and unix file systems but now I've got to develop and execute a test plan for file sharing between Windows clients and samba servers running within Windows domains of various configurations. What are some good relatively quick learning resources that can get me up to speed? [more inside]
