A few months ago, I booked an incredible deal on a flight to spend 4 days next week in or around San Francisco. Life got busy, and I still haven't made any actual plans for what we're going to do, or where we're going to stay. We've been to SF a few times before, and want to rent a car and explore the area surrounding the city this time around -- particularly to the North. Any budget-friendly suggestions?

I live in downtown Oakland, near 12th St. BART, and I have a flight at SFO at 7AM. I imagine this means I'd need to get to the airport around 6:20. I'd prefer to take BART to SFO but it is not running that early (is it?). What options do I have to get there?

When people use the airport code of the San Francisco international airport (SFO) to refer to the city of San Francisco, is that an example of synecdoche or metonymy? Can it be both? The airport isn't within the city limits of San Francisco, if that makes a difference.

My 50 year old uncle is visiting San Fran this Thursday for the first time. I am picking him up at SFO at 11 and we want to be back to Novato by about 330 to beat (most of) the traffic. On the way out we will certainly go up to the Marin Headlands, and he is a big seafood guy so I am guessing we will catch lunch down near the Wharf or maybe at the Cliff House.
Obviously we don't have much time, so what recommendations do you all have for a few cool things to see in the city on the way out? I think we'll do Lombard, but otherwise I'm not terribly interested in super-touristy stuff. Maybe some historic spots?

California peeps: Where's a good place to spend the night while driving the coastal route south from Redwoods to San Francisco? Assume a noonish flight out of SFO the next day after dropping a rental car off downtown, so it should be well south of the midpoint.
