Lost my camera in the snow; is it worth trying to find it in the Spring?

Updating a Wikireader

After reading about it here a few weeks ago, I bought a remaindered Wikireader for cheap on eBay. The Wikireader page offers a Win or Mac app to do the update for you, and a developer page explains how to do it manually. Problem is, either way the 7zip archives for the various Wikis time out and quit downloading only part way through, and then choke when you try to unzip them. I wonder if these data files for the Wikireader are available anywhere else other than the support site, where the download might go better, or maybe as a torrent. I've looked, but maybe I am looking in the wrong places. Everyone seems to have quit playing with these a few years ago, does anyone know of any ongoing hack/programming/repurposing efforts? Do they still sell the miniSD cards preloaded with recent updates?

Now you see it... now you swear!

When trying to read a Sandisk 16Gb Class 2 Micro SD card (on my Win7 PC through a USB reader) it will show up briefly but as soon as I try to copy any files the drive itself will disappear, meaning I can't save any of the data (or pics) from it, so I'm looking for a way to keep the drive visible to my PC so I can save the data. (The card comes from my Android HTC Desire HD which randomly dismounted itself this morning and now reports itself as 'damaged' in the phone). Any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance!

Want to purchase 1Gb SD Cards in Bulk - with no Retail Pacakaging

Each year our company sends our customers holiday gifts as well as a calendar (we use employee photos for the calendar). The gift we want to send this year is a 7-inch digital photo frame. We'd like to pre-load an SD card with past calendar photos - for display on the photo frame. I would like to purchase (at lowest cost of course) 200-300 1 GB SD cards. I prefer no retail packaging (we'd just have to spend time tearing into that stupid theft-proof plastic). [more inside]

Seeking alternative file manager

I need a free file manager for Windows XP that will allow me to specify the order in which files are physically written to an SD Card. Specifically - if i have a folder of music containing, say, 32 tracks of varying length, I want to be able to instruct the file manager to complete the copying of them over according to something like the file name (if each track title was prefixed by the track number) - The order in which Windows Explorer seems to complete copying seems to be based purely on how long each track takes - i.e. shorter tracks copy over sooner than longer tracks due to their file size. Any recommendations of free options gratefully received. [more inside]

Help me get photos off my SD card from a cafe in Cambodia

How to Benchmark Read/Write Speeds On My SD Card vs. My Hard Drive?

Is there a free and/or clever way to find out if the SD card plugged into my laptop is faster or slower than the laptop hard drive regarding read/write operations? I am running Windows Vista Home Premium. I'm wondering, for example, if the SD card would be a better scratch disk for Photoshop, and other apps that require non-RAM swap/scratch space. (I'm not intending to use ReadyBoost.)

Which camcorders let you turn off all the clever stuff and access the raw video?

I'm thinking of buying a camcorder. My requirements are slightly unusual: I would like one that does all the "bells and whistles" stuff (image stabilisation, auto light balance, H.264 compression etc). But I also want to be able to turn off all the clever stuff and access the "raw" video. Any recommendations? Hard disk/SD recording is a must, high definition would be good.

Very slow transfer to SD card on Tungsten-E

I recently purchased a Kingston 256MB SD card for my Tungsten-E. File transfer speeds are incredibly slow: it takes 15-30 minutes to transfer one measly MP3. I bought and installed a USB-2 card on my computer, but it doesn't seem to help much. Is this normal? Is there a problem with the SD-card or the handheld? Would buying a dedicated card reader help?

Speed of SD cards

About to get a new Palm, and I'm wondering about Secure Digital (SD) cards. Now, word on the street is that different cards perform at different speeds, and that SanDisk is the slowest of them. Those of you who use SD cards with your handhelds and cameras, what brands and capacities have worked best for you? (As of now, I have my eye on a Lexar 256MB, maybe a 512MB.)

Should I continue to invest in SD accessories?

As I've mentioned here before, I have a Pocket PC that uses SD cards. I've had the device for about 18 months and it is in good shape. I'm at a crossroads now where I'm not sure if I should continue to invest in SD accessories, or simply wait for the compact memory arena to settle down. Anyone with some insight into the future of Pocket PC's, SD, and its competition? [more inside]
