What do I need to know about hard drive enclosures? My computer (PC) died this morning and I want to pull out the 2 hard drives and use them as external drives for my new Mac. I don't know if they're FAT32 or NTFS. I don't know if they're IDE or SATA. How do I find out? Do I need to? A little background on my old PC. It was one of the first P4 3.0 PCs with hyperthreading technology. I've had it for ~4 years

I have two SATA drives installed on my machine. My computer works fine except for the fact that roughly every two or three weeks my computer will fail to boot with a message reading "NTLOADER is missing. Press CTRL ALT DEL to reboot." I can fix the problem temporarily by opening up my computer case and swapping the drives around on the motherboard (putting the cable for Drive 1 into SATA 2 and vice versa), at which point Windows will boot up fine and function without a problem but as I said, within the space of two to three weeks, the problem comes back. Hope me, please! System specs inside. [more inside]

If I'm buying a hard disk which will be put into an external enclosure (most likely a 320Gb Seagate), connected via USB2 (not eSATA), is there ANY practical difference (apart from the $5-10 price difference) between picking PATA or SATA?

PC hardware/xp masters, lend me your keystrokes. I have a Dell Demension 9100, or I should say- I am working on a Dell Demension 9100. The computer was working fine until one day when it BSOD'd with an error concerning the /sysroot/system32/SOFTWARE or something of the like. I tried everything I could to get into the recovery console, but no dice, BSOD'd everytime even loading the windows cd. (Should have been my first warning I think...) So I boot into knoppix (it's a 64 bit, so I had to buy an enclosure because I don't have a SATA on my old 500 mhz gx1) mount the drive and copy over all the files to another external disk. I move that onto another one of the org's computers and the Foundation is back in business. See more for the fun part. [more inside]

An internal serial ATA (SATA) 3.5" hard drive pulled from an iMac G5 (the iMac is not accessible). A FireWire IDE enclosure. I live in Brooklyn and want some place open tonight (magically) or early tomorrow to find either a USB2 adapter for the SATA drive, a cheap USB2/FireWire enclosure, or an SATA>IDE adapter so I can use my current enclosure. (Give me any ideas that don't involve J&R.) Bonus points for Brooklyn - other boroughs are cool too, or any of these devices on loan from someone extremely generous would also be awesome!

I just got a new 250GB SATA hard drive and a SATA to USB 2.0 enclosure to put it in. When I plug everything in & hook it to my iBook, I get the following error: "You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read. To continue with the disk inserted, click Ignore" (3 options: "Initialize...", "Ignore" or "Eject"). How do I get it to work? [more inside]

I have been unable to boot from my brand new SATA hard drive. If I boot from an IDE drive, I can read from and write to this drive with absolutely no problems whatsoever. But when I try to boot, I get a "DISK BOOT FAILURE" error. I've tried many things to get this to work, and I'm quickly running out of ideas. List of things I've tried and hardware details inside.

We've got an empty drive cradle for our Xserve, and we've also got an extra SATA drive. I'd like to use the SATA in one of the Xserve slots. Problem is, it seems that Apple uses some kind of proprietary bridge to connect drives to the Xserve bus. I've posted pictures of the bridge attached to our current drives on flickr. Is there a bridge or similar product, Apple or third party, that we can use to mount our extra drive in the Xserve?
