I have some beautiful heirloom roses that I planted last year. One of them was decimated by rose slugs. It has come back bushy and beautiful thankfully! I noticed that someone had already been sampling this year's goods. Aphids maybe? What can I put on the roses that will keep the pests away but not harm the honey bees? Someone must have a hive nearby because I see them quite frequently.
After some great success with a lavender and blueberry sauce I was thinking it would be fun to have a whole party based around flower/flowering food and drink. I've got blooming flower tea and rose-infused vodka on the list, and my local market occasionally sells edible flowers around this time of year - but what are some other flower-based dishes I should be looking at? What should I be looking out for in terms of safety and not accidentally poisoning my guests? What kind of springtime courses would be in season? (For the sake of my sanity I'm going to try for buffet style small plates) And is there anyplace online or in the NYC area that specializes in edible flowers? [more inside]

I read this book in the 1970s or possibly the early 1980s. The story is set in medieval times, the main character is a girl and it has to do with damask roses (breeding or raising them?). There's more too it of course, but that's all I remember. The book was a paperback and the cover had a full colour drawing of the girl on the front standing by some roses. I believe she's wearing a rose coloured cotehardie or something similar. A rock wall or well may have also been in the background of the cover.

"From our studio in New York, this is Charlie Rose" ---- who does the "our studio" refer to? Wikipedia and the Official Charlie Rose website don't appear to shed any light. Does Charlie and his co-executive producer own the studio? WNET? Bueller? Bonus question: why is it announced that way, other than to stick in the mind of the listener?

I'm interested in starting a few rose plants and I have no idea where I can find out about certain strains that appear to be ghosts on the internet. I've found that there is some people who have genetically engineered a blue rose and I'm interested in acquiring a blue rose plant engineered or not and I don't want to just dye white roses blue. Any information about roses that look like the ones from the film "V for Vendetta" is also appreciated. [more inside]
This is going to be really difficult, I think, but it's worth a shot. A long time ago I saw (on dutch tv) a documentary about a young dutch painter/artist of the seventies. He was in his twenties back then, I believe, and he died (of cancer?) soon after (that is, probably also in the seventies). Can anyone tell me what his name is? Somehow whenever I think back of this documentary a rose pops into my mind, but I don't know why. Perhaps it was a painting of his.
In the book The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco, is there a rose in the book? I think I might have missed that reference. What name and what rose is the title referring to?
