I'm looking for rock concept albums from the 70s and beyond that veer towards the mystical, magic(k)al, and otherwise weird. Specimens so far include Poe's (no, not her)
Up Through the Spiral, Black Widow's
Sacrifice, and a whole lot of Hawkwind. I get the sense there was a lot more of this in the 70s, but who knows.

Hello. I am trying to locate a few recordings by obscure indie new wave bands that got stuck in my head in the 80's that I've been trying and failing to locate ever since. I have no idea the names of the bands or artists that recorded the songs, but hopefully I can provide enough information that someone who is familiar with them can identify them. The songs are "Genghis Khan," "Watch out Franco," and "Heart of a Boxer."

I'm thinking of a music video by a Japanese rock band that starts with a long tracking shot of a huge guitar effects pedal chain. I know it is an amazing song but I can't for the life of me recall the name.

I'm curious about the real-world economics of being a musician who "made it" but is not, say, Sir Elton John or Bruce Springsteen or Jay-Z. For instance, how's James McNew, bassist of the incomparable Yo La Tengo, doing? Is Ken Bethea, guitarist for the Old 97's, comfortable? Ian Matthews, drummer for Kasabian, are you sorted for a comfortable retirement?

Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but I'm not TOO familiar with many songs of that era and genre. I'm looking for a song that conveys a sentiment similar to Lisa Loeb's 'Stay' (link to lyrics
here if it helps).

I love playing guitar, and I love British rock/pop/punk (esp. 90s Britpop era). If you were compiling a list of awesome UK music to play on guitar from, say, 1975 to today, what
specific songs would you include?

This ranks up there with "non-anonymous embarrassing questions." If you wanted to feel hipper than someone today, here's your big chance. The last time I really listened to newly-produced rock music of any kind was somewhere between Casey Kasem and Nine Inch Nails. I don't even own a radio right now. I have an iTunes account....I use for free podcasts.

I'm a huge fan of science fiction book cover art (especially the 50s through the 80s) and I like to use ideas from them to make posters for my band.
If you need examples:
this should explain what I'm looking for.
I'm wondering if there are existing resources for science fiction cover art or general science fiction art that mirrors this sort of style and substance? I especially need resources that are fair use, free to modify etc. etc.
We use these posters to advertise our shows at places which usually have a cover charge -- so I will need content that I can modify to use "commercially".

Identify this song please! I'm making a mixtape of songs with distinctive vocal flourishes and there's a snippet going through my head that I just can't place. This song's building to a crescendo and the singer yells "Whoo!" followed by three piano chords that sound almost like percussion (bum! bum! bum!) before continuing on.

Help settle a contentious argument: friend argues that hip-hop/rap requires less talent than rock/pop, and that the true measure of talent is being able to stand on a stage with nothing but a guitar and microphone. This doesn't seem right to me, but I don't know hip-hop/rap well. Is this a valid position? Are there any musicians in rap and hip-hop that defy this?

An elderly family friend has an original poster (known as BG074) and program from the 1967 Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead concert at the O'Keefe Centre in Toronto. He is interested in selling the poster and program, and I've offered to help out. According to
Wolfgang's Vault, "BG074 is among the rarest of posters. There are hard to verify stories that the original cache of posters was confiscated at the Canadian border by border patrol, but whether the posters were seized or simply put away by contented Canadians, this summer concert made a big impression." Accordingly, I've seen auctions and online memorabilia stores listing this poster in the $5,000 and up range, and the program for close to $1,000.
What is the best way to authenticate and sell these items? I contacted Wolfgang's Vault but they don't normally purchase individual items, and the art dealers I've been in touch with don't deal with rock memorabilia. Is there a Sotheby's of rock? Is eBay even worth considering?

In the late 90s in Portland, Oregon, there was an AM radio program called the Saturday Morning Rock Show (if I'm remembering right) on (maybe) 1010 AM. Ran for 3-4 hours or so. Switched to Sundays at one point, then back to Saturdays I think, and then was gone. For most of their time they only played local Portland bands.

I'm a drummer in an indie-rock band with a 5-piece kit who is looking to expand my setup to include a drum sampling pad. I want something that has unique percussion sounds (not just cheesy electronic beats), built-in effects, plenty of storage space to upload my own samples, and the ability to record and loop live drumbeats. Any advice?

After recommendations from friends, I've just recently discovered 30 Rock. I started watching from Season 1, Episode 1. Turns out I love the show. But here's the problem: I'm in a place in my life with very little time to dedicate to TV. So while I want to be caught up so I can watch the most recent episodes and talk about them with friends, there's no way I can watch all of the episodes. So, MeFi - what are the
must-watch 30 Rock episodes? I've Googled around, but would love your opinions.

Calling all indie music geeks... I need help identifying a band. iPhone update nuked all the downloaded music in my Rhapsody app. I was listening to a band that I liked a lot. Singer had sort of baritone, with interesting lyrics. Imagine a post-punk, slightly less-lackadaisical Leonard Cohen. Pretty sure record is relatively recent and band name has the word 'Future' in it. Any ideas?
