This is driving me insane. What is the name of the 19th century American folk painter, called something like Franz Vogl, Kogl, Vogel, Fogel - something Austrian sounding - who drew very distinctive landscapes featuring buildings with mildly distorted perspectives and a lot of horizontal lines, usually titled below with calligraphic captions like "Miss Joanna Cunningham's House." A year or two back there was an online video (Boingboing tv?) showing an interview with a young artist (British?) who had mounted a camera behind and above his back, which fed the live video to goggles he wore. He'd also dressed in a getup that would make him look like a game character, spiky hair and such. "Live 3rd person perspective" in other words.
Half an hour of googling and I can't find the darn video or any info relating to the artist. I think part of the video was shot in Japan, where he staggered around and posed in front of people, á la WoW taunting.

I'm looking for examples of (probably) contemporary art history/art theory/art writing which emphasise the situatedness of artistic practice (i.e. the notion that we need to have some understanding of the social and cultural context in which an artwork functions in order to be able to make sense of it). Any suggestions?

Help me find a reprint of Saul Steinberg's 1976 New Yorker poster, if such a thing exists. This is my awesome birthday gift idea for my husband... but I can't afford an original, which sell on fleabay for $200ish. I'm in the UK right now but will be moving to NYC in September, so a store there or online place would be great.

Is there an equation that defines the change in apparent size as a function of distance from the viewer? Basically, if I'm looking at a set of railroad tracks head on, if one plank is like 10 ft away, it appears to be one size. The same plank 20 ft away appears smaller. What is the relative size difference? Put another way, how big does a 1ft line appear to be at 10 ft, at 20 ft, etc.? [more inside]
